Add Two-Digit Numbers

Dear Family, 29
This week your child is learning to add two-digit
numbers, making a new ten when necessary.
One strategy for adding two-digit numbers is to add the tens to the tens and add
the ones to the ones. If adding the ones to the ones results in a total of 10 or more,
your child will see how to combine 10 ones to make 1 ten.
Example: Find 25 1 14. Example: Find 38 1 17.
There are fewer than 10 ones. You There are more than 10 ones. You
do not need to make a new ten. can make a new ten.

So, 25 1 14 5 39.
Learning to make a ten in this way will help your child add two-digit numbers and
will prepare your child to use other addition and subtraction strategies.
Invite your child to share what he or she knows about adding two-digit numbers by
doing the following activity together.

Activity   Adding Two-Digit Numbers
Do this activity with your child to practice adding two-digit numbers.
Materials 2 number cubes, pencil, and paper
Tell your child you will be practicing adding two-digit numbers and that
sometimes it will be necessary to make a new ten.
• Have your child roll two 1–6 number cubes to form a two-digit number.
For example, for a roll of 3 and 5, he or she can make 35 or 53. Write this
number in the first column of the table below.
• Ask your child to add 27 to the number and record the answer below. This
may or may not require making a new ten.
• Ask your child how he or she can tell whether a new ten will be made
when looking at the numbers being added.
• Have your child make quick drawings like the Example on the previous
page to model the numbers being added.
• Repeat this activity until your child has completed the table.
