 Honour for community farm volunteer
A volunteer at a Great Sutton charity has been appointed as one of Cheshire’s new Deputy
Lieutenants
Sandra Verity is a volunteer driver for the Bridge Community Farm charity, off Overpool Road,
which runs an organically grown vegetable box scheme across the region.
She also sits on one of the charity’s monthly management committees and regularly helps
out on their market stalls.
The Lord-Lieutenant is The Queen’s Representative in Cheshire. He or she is able to appoint
a number of Deputy Lieutenants to assist in carrying out his many and varied duties.
Deputy Lieutenants are nominated by the Lord Lieutenant to assist with their duties which
include advising on official events to the county such as those which warrant a Royal visit.
Sandra, who grew up on an
organic farm, said: “I got involved
with Bridge Community Farms for
a number of reasons.
“Mainly it was their approach to
supporting young people and
their families in a community
context, giving access to fresh air
and learning to nurture, grow and,
where appropriate, eat plants;
leading to improved mental and
physical wellbeing.
“I also liked their determination
to extend the wellness message
to the wider Cheshire and Wirral
Community through their Veg
Box scheme, giving access to
fresh, organically grown fruit and
vegetables while also supporting a
local charity.
“I love meeting our customers and many are fascinated to know how many items are grown
by us in Ellesmere Port.”
Bridge Community Farms, based in Mill Lane, off Overpool Road, is looking for more people
who can offer their time and expertise, help with sponsorship of their Better Lives Veg Boxes
or can offer financial support for a young person on a work placement or for a Better Lives
Veg Box to be delivered to a homeless charity.
They also need more delivery drivers who can work 8.30am-11.30am every Tuesday,
café staff and volunteers who can help man their various market stalls across the region.
Expenses are paid to all volunteers.
The charity offers training and life skills to children and young people who are struggling
to thrive in a standard academic environment while ongoing guidance, support and work
experience is also available to the unemployed.
The charity also runs weekly Bright Life groups to reduce social isolation in the community
including a weekly crafts session every Thursday 12-2pm (cost £2.50) and a weekly
woodworking group every Thursday 12-3pm (cost £3.50).

THAT AND WHAT’S THE
DIFFERENCE?
A.There is a big difference
in how each type of
sunscreen do their job. A
chemical sunscreen will
use an ingredient such as
avobenzone, which is very
effective at absorbing the
energy rays from the sun,
giving you full spectrum
protection. It has the added
advantage of being transparent and so is suitable for all skin tones. However, the chemical sunscreen absorbs the UV
rays from the sun turning them into heat and so this type of sunscreen is often unsuitable for people who have sensitive
skins, rosacea or any kind of skin inflammation.
On the other hand, a physical sunscreen uses minerals such as zinc or titanium dioxide and they work by reflecting
the sun’s rays away from the skin without creating heat. Until now physical sunscreens have always created a white or
‘chalky’ effect on the skin, but over the past six years scientists have been working hard to create an invisible, physical
sunscreen which has now been achieved and hit the skin care market in March 2020.

 Twelve charged with drug supply
Police have charged 12 people in Ellesmere
Port with drug offences following an operation
targeting organised crime.
The nine men and three women appeared at
Chester Magistrates Court.
Christopher Beattie, 31, of Sutton Way, has been
charged with conspiracy to import cannabis and
two counts of possession with intent to supply
cannabis.
Zoe Beattie, 28, of Parklands View, was charged
with conspiracy to import cannabis and money
laundering.
Billy Dodd, 22, of Grappenhall Road, was charged
with conspiracy to supply cannabis.
Martin Ellis, 57, of Marlborough Road, was
charged with conspiracy to import cannabis,
conspiracy to supply cannabis and money
laundering.
Christy Foster, 21, of Grappenhall Road, was
charged with conspiracy to import cannabis,

Don’t go to the Gym!
Bring the Gym to you!
Every new health or cancer scare that
doctors uncover seems to come with the
standard, “…keep fit, lose weight and eat
healthy foods to minimise the risk…”
statement. We know it’s true but finding
time to get to the gym is difficult when our
lives are so busy.
So why not bring the gym to your home?
If you have an area that’s big enough for you to lie down
in, with your arms stretched out to either side, with a
few extra inches for good measure you’ve got enough
space to do a workout at home. No matter what your
initial fitness level, aims and budget are you can start to
exercise in the comfort of your own home.
Basic Fitness
If you’re after basic fitness you can try a home HIIT
session. All you need is a timer or smartphone app
and a workout program - there are loads of videos on
YouTube for every fitness level. HIIT or High Intensity
Interval Training works on short bursts of exercise,
up to about 1 minute, with rests of maybe 30 seconds
in between. It gets your heart rate up and gives you a
great workout in a very short space of time. Exercises
range from simple marching on the spot, squats, and
leg raises right through to advanced press-ups and
handstands, but all doable in the space we mentioned
earlier. An exercise mat might help for any lying-down
exercises and a resistance band or small set of weights
is a useful addition, but that’s about all you’ll need.
Three, twenty-minute sessions per week and you’ll
really start to see some results. Do it in the morning
before breakfast for maximum fat-burning efficiency,
and to set you up for the day.

Building your strength can also be done at home.
FEATURE
Calisthenics is a form of training that uses your body
weight instead of free-standing weights. Each exercise
has a series of progressions from easy to very hard. Take
the simple press up as an example. Start doing them
whilst standing and leaning against a wall. As you move
your feet further from the wall it gets harder. Eventually
you’ll be able to do a full press up on the ground. Then
try positioning your hands closer to your waistline so
you are leaning forwards as you press up - it’s getting
harder now. Then try leaning so far forwards your feet
leave the floor and you’re into a planche position - not
for the faint hearted!
Other calisthenics exercises need some basic
equipment. Dips will need a set of dip bars. Pull
ups will need some pull up bars. But all of these are
relatively cheap to purchase and take up minimal space
when not in use.
What about exercise machines?
If you’re starting out my advice is to avoid machines
until you know what you like. You’ll probably only
have enough space and cash for one, and they are not
portable so once you’ve got it you’re stuck with it. Build
up your basic fitness and strength first and then decide
what you want to do. Once your body starts to show
some results you might even be tempted to venture
down to the gym to take advantage of a wider range of
equipment!
Be sensible
Always be careful with your body. Seek professional
advice before starting any exercise regime. Make sure
you’re working safely and within your capabilities.
Start easy and work up to the harder progressions. If
you have any signs of pain or discomfort, STOP! Rest,
recover and assess the situation.
Above all have fun getting fit and staying healthy.

Tools stolen from vans and sheds

Police are investigating thefts from vans and sheds in Great Sutton are urging people to
be vigilant.
Tools were stolen from two white vans in the town between 6.30pm on Tuesday 3rd
March and 2pm on Wednesday 4th March and a shed was broken into at around 11pm on
Monday 2nd March.
The incidents involving workmen’s vans occurred in Bridge Meadow and Yeoman Way.
A petrol lawnmower and a pressure washer were stolen from the shed in Marbury
Gardens.
Det Const Kevin Cooper said: “Having your possessions stolen by thieves is deeply
upsetting.
“We are determined to establish who committed these offences and bring them to
justice.”
