GOV TH believes that patriotism is destructive to international relation

Speaker 1

I would like to start my motion today with this sentence that I came across in the internet ‘Anger and hate digs
hole….love and kindness move mountains….Choose wisely!

Patriotism is defined as the overwhelming love and respect for one's country. Pride in national identity.
Patriotism is in fact a flavour of nationalism, that is seasoned in a respect, a pride, and a willingness to do the utmost
for the dignity of the home country of the patriot. But it may also mean another form of nationalism that instils pride
in ones' own country by instilling a feeling of superiority over all other lands. There is yet another form of patriotism
that preaches, "We are so good that let us install our form of goodness across other lands – especially if you have
resources we would like to plunder” this used to happened in our country as British and Japanese occupation seem to
started as high spirited patriotism among their people lead to the movement of seeking advantages of our country.

Based on what I mention just now, we as the affirmative side believe that PATRIOTISM IS DESTRUCTIVE
TO INTERNATIOANL RELATION if we go overboard towards our country internal and external issues. If some
event occurs around us, the first step needed is to control how we response towards our surrounding pressure. This is
because our neighbour’s country or countries that showed interest will surely take the opportunity to meddle and find
our action mistake as point to engage in demand talk over something beneficial to them.

We as the affirmative team believe that, patriotism might lead on creating enmity in this country. When
patriotism turns political, it can turn groups against the other and it can lead to the enmity of fundamental values.
Supporting the countries policies blindly may lead to wars between nations. This can be proven on how we handle
Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation between 1963 to 1966. The high tension created by Indonesia high leader lead to
the small-scale invasion in few places around Malaysia. But with the God Grace of Allah SWT, this confrontation
managed to be stop when our country work with other Commonwealth country by protecting and having open
discussion with Indonesian government.

Dear opposition team, to sum up my point here, when patriotism turns political, it can turn groups against the
other and it can lead to the enmity of fundamental values. Supporting the countries policies blindly may lead to wars
between nations as how Indonesia treated us Malaysia during the merging period of Peninsula, Sarawak and Sabah.
Thank you

Based on the topic we are discussing now; PATRIOTISM IS DESTRUCTIVE TO INTERNATIOANL

RELATION. I would like to highlight few loopholes on definition of the word patriotism just now.

(Rebuttal take place)

Rebuttal (response to opposition case)
1 The first speaker for the negative has tried to tell you (During the debate, list the main arguments
outlined by the first speaker for the negative team. Insert them here.)
2 This is wrong because (During the debate write a reason why that point is wrong. Insert it here.)
3 The second negative speaker has tried to tell you (During the debate, list the main arguments
outlined by the second speaker for the negative team. Insert them here.)
4 This is wrong because (During the debate write a reason why what your opposition’s second
speaker has said is wrong. If you have some more points list them as well.)
Now it is my turn to highlight why we as the government saying that PATRIOTISM IS DESTRUCTIVE TO
INTERNATIOANL RELATION. Besides, creating enmity, becoming too overboard with patriotism also can give
birth to unquestionable loyalty. This kind of situation is very dangerous as shown during Al-Ma’unah incident that
happened on 2nd July 2000. This small group of people was a spiritual Islamist militant group based in Malaysia. They
became the centre of attention when they raid an army camp and stealing weapons from the armoury. Their main
reason for the raid is to overthrow the governing government at that time. All 27 members were arrested by Malaysia
Royal Police. Most of the member can be consider blindly followed their leader instruction without questioning. This
is a clear picture on how patriotism when manipulated can cause serious impact toward our country internally.
Our country landscape also shown negative progress when our society still setting their mind based on racial
agenda. Most of us in this country are still focusing on difference rather than similarity. Even we already achieved our
independent for over 63 years, their still big gap among races living in Malaysia. Our fundamental of Patriotism is still
blur and this has created division. What I mean by creating division is patriotism divides more people than it actually
gathers. People who support different ideologist end up discriminated and some people may think certain lives are
more important than others. This kind of patriotism should be stop right now or it will become just as a late stage
cancer case where the patient just waiting time to end. Is this patriotism we want to have in our beloved country.
Prevention is better than cure, I have high believe in this quote. Thank you.
Thank you

Patriotism is typically defined as “love of one’s country,” and such love seems decent and normal to most people. But
does it make sense to pledge allegiance to an area, to the people within it, or to a colored piece of cloth that
supposedly symbolizes it and all this action will surely become questions for other countries towards us.

Logical or not, people like waving and rallying around flags. But not everyone agrees that this is a good thing. For
example, Albert Einstein said he hated “all the loathsome nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism.” Leo Tolstoy
said, “One would expect the harmfulness and irrationality of patriotism to be evident to everybody.” Many others have
expressed similar sentiments. It’s possible that despite the good feelings and social bonding produced, patriotism does
more harm than good.

Case 3

As mention by the opposition arguments, we as government will simply ascribe all the worst effects of overboard
patriotism as a result of “extreme patriotism” or misinterpretations of what it means to be patriotic. But if the risks are
there, and milder forms might lead to more virulent ones, we have to ask if patriotism is necessary at all in our country
situation right now.

Do we derive some special benefits from it in terms of prosperity or liberty based on patriotism persepctive? There
isn’t much evidence for that hypothesis. We don’t need to be patriotic to defend common values or the spaces we
share. People will defend themselves, their families, and their homes with or without patriotic feelings. So what
evidence is there for enough good effects of patriotism to balance the harm done by it?

A wary patriotism is better than jingoistic patriotism. That's a liberal point of view. Opposition seem to subscribe more
to the "my country, right or wrong" point of view.

We as the government think that people who support their country's policies, no matter whether they are right or
wrong, usually do so because they don't know much about other people in other countries. However, if you know
something about life in other countries, it is hard to be one hundred percent behind the policies of your country's
leadership. Patriotism, however, can often be used to get people to do stupid things. It is easy to threaten someone
with anti-patriotism if they don't support the current policy. I guess sometimes this kind of patriotism is good to get
young men to be willing to sacrifice themselves for a nation. But I wish people would educate themselves before
sacrificing themselves.

As the government, we don't like anything that is used to make people act without thinking, and we are afraid that
patriotism is often used this way. Of course, if you want people to act without thinking, appealing to patriotism is a
good way to do it. But if you want a better world, patriotism should have its limitations as we would like our country
to be more stable and create good impression to our surrounding countries . With that we as the government believes
that patriotism is destructive to international relation

Nothing is good or bad until taken to the extreme.

As with all patriotism, there is a fear. The fear is that if they allow people of a different race and culture to think
differently in their country and create something unthinkable that may lead to internal problem and create negative
impact with a\other around us, then it will be the end as worst case scenario we can imagine to our country.

So patriotism is only good if you have a balanced perspective, but then you would probably be called a
‘proud’Malaysian, rather than a patriot. You would have pride in yourself and therefore your country, you would feel
secure, rather than having a fear that someone from the outside would take it away.

RESPONSES FROM THE OTHER TEAM OVERALL CASE.

Since many people seem to have an imbalance, patriotism in the wrong hands is not only divisive, it’s become lethal.

With that, thank you.
