Finn-Niklas Holler
Music and politics documentary
Final deadline – 22nd May 2020
Client
I have decided to submit my work to a client instead of a competition as I have
not found any competitions that would fit my documentary. I have decided to
submit my documentary to the BBC and if they find it good they could air it on
Tv. I think this is the best for my documentary as it is a big issue that a lot of
people would want to see and if I submit it to a competition it wouldn’t reach
the people that the documentary was aimed for.

Commission Entry Points

“Our vision for BBC Two is, firstly, to build on the channel’s great tradition as
the place where the audience comes to discover the world in all its complexity,
bringing broad audiences to specialisms.”

“Secondly, to re-emphasise Two’s role bringing authorship and expertise

across all genres, making it a place where great talents can realise their most
creative ambitions.”

“Lastly, at the centre of our vision is the need to make the channel more
engaged with the complexities of the modern world, to make it more vital and
relevant to the audience: to make the channel timely, not timeless.”
Idea
Our idea is to help people get more understanding into how music and
musicians can influence politics.

Our idea is to have documentary on the idea that music can influence politics
and politicians we will bring this idea across to the audience by making a
timeline on how music has influenced politics throughout the years so it would
be from around World War 1 time and how political issues were influenced by
music then to nowadays and how it is still happening and some of the issues
nowadays. We will also be having some archive footage in the documentary of
musicians speaking about some of the issues in politics to show our point that
musicians have a say in what happens as well because some would say that the
platform some big musicians have such as Stormzy could be as big or even
bigger then some on the politicians and Stormzy has an influence on people
from a younger generation who may not know anything about politics but
know a lot about the musician in this case Stormzy. We will be getting some
interviews from professionals that we know about what there idea on the
whole thing and if they think that it is a good idea that musicians are using
their platform to help influence peoples opinions on something as big as the
general election. We will have someone speaking over some of the archive
footage that we are using stating some of the things some musicians have said
about politics but one thing that i will try to focus on quite a bit is the general
election that has just happened and some of the musicians that have said
some things about our prime minister and the people who are going up against
him which has lead to people from the younger generations who have just
registered to vote so people aged 18-20 to influence them to vote for who the
musicians think will help the country the most. One of the artists that I am
going to focus on the most in this documentary is Stormzy, he has been one of
the most controversial and influential people in helping people vote for the
election, I will look at the lyrics in his songs, some of his speeches and also
social media posts, one of these lyrics that was very influential from Stormzy
was "f**k the government and f**k Boris".

Target Audience
I think that choosing the 18-25 year old age group is perfect as I believe that
the documentary that I am going to produce will have lots of information
about how music influences politics and I think that not many people in this
age group will know about how it did in the olden times, I think they will know
about more from the 2010s and up as they lived through it but I believe that
they will not know about some of the older campaigns. A lot of the 41+ people
know about all the times many years ago when music influenced politics as
they have lived through much more elections and political campaigns and will
already know a lot about the whole issue of how music influences politics.

Aside from submitting my documentary to the BBC I will also be uploading my

documentary to social media platforms to promote it and then fully upload it
on YouTube. I will be promoting my documentary on platforms such as
Instagram and Snapchat, I have done some research into which social media
platforms the people in my age group use the most and from this research I
have found out that Snapchat and Instagram are two of the most popular
social media platforms that people in my age group use with 75% of people in
my age group using Instagram and 73% of people in the age group using
Snapchat. After finding this out I thought that most of my age group would see
me promote my documentary if I promote my documentary on these
platforms.

I think another reason people have voted for this age group is because a lot of
the people in the age group are really into music and listen to it nearly
everyday so they would know about the musicians and how they are
connected with politicians but they may not know about some of the older
times where music has influenced politics and this is what my documentary is
going to speak about.
