Nick “Welcome to our assembly. In Year 2, we have been learning
about changes in responsibilities as we grow older. Today, we
will be performing our assembly item on ‘what we want to be
when we grow up’ based on the story ‘Oh, The Places You’ll
Go’ by Dr. Seuss. It will follow the worries of a little girl, Sally,
concerned about her future and what she should be.”

Nick exits to left-hand side of stage (outfit change to guernsey and shorts).

SLIDE 2

Sally enters from right-hand side of stage, wearing a pyjama set and eye mask.

Sally sits on the bed prop and looks into the audience with sorrow.

Sally (Melancholic) “Everyone at school was talking about what

they want to be when they grow up, but I couldn’t exactly think
of what I want to be. Should I know by now?”

Sally lays down on bed prop and pulls the sheet over her, turning away from the audience.

Lights turn off.

Dream sound effect.

Lights turn on.

Sally awakes, sitting upright on the bed prop and looks around at the audience, confused.

SLIDE 3

‘Who 1’ (Bree) enters from right-hand side of stage, skipping and smiling, wearing a
matching yellow shirt and beanie (same outfit at character ‘You’ in ‘Oh, the Places You’ll
Go!”).

Sally appears frightened.

Bree skips to stage centre .

Who 1 (Enthusiastic) “Congratulations!

Today is your day (points to Sally).

You're off to Great Places!

You're off and away! (pans hand around to audience)

You have brains in your head (points to head).

You have feet in your shoes (points to feet).

You can steer yourself any direction you choose” (steers
imaginary car).
‘Who 2’ (Julia) enters from left-hand side of stage, skipping and smiling, wearing a
matching yellow shirt and beanie.

Julia skips to stage centre .

Who 2 (Enthusiastic) “You’re on your own. And you know what you
know. And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go (points to
Sally).

You'll look up and down streets (looks up and down). Look'em

over with care. About some you will say, "I don't choose to go
there” (shakes finger)

Who 1 and Who 2 (In-Sync.) “With your head full of brains (points to head)
and your shoes full of feet (points to feet), you're too smart to
go down any not-so-good street” (shakes finger).

‘Who 3’ (Chianna) enters from right-hand side of the stage, skipping and smiling, wearing a
matching yellow shirt and beanie.

Chianna skips to stage centre .

Who 3 (Enthusiastic) “And you may not find any you'll want to go
down (shakes head). In that case, of course, you'll head
straight out of town. Its opener there in the wide open air
(makes world shape with hands).

Out there things can happen, and frequently do, to people as

brainy (points to head) and footsy (points to feet) as you.”

Bree, Julia and Chianna lock arms, smile and skip off to the left-hand side of the stage.

Who 1, Who 2 and Who 3 (In-Sync.) “And when things start to happen, don’t worry, don’t
stew. Just go right along, you’ll start happening too!”

—

Sally watches the three ‘Who’s’ leave the stage, still confused.

Sally (Vaguely) “They told me to follow my brain and use my feet, but
where does that lead me?” (tapping head)

SLIDE 4

Play snippet of ‘Eagle Rock!’, by Daddy Cool (0:00 to 0:12).

ALF siren sound effect.
Nick enters from the crowd, hand balling a football to himself, unaware of Sally.

Nick moves from upstage left to upstage right , pretending to dodge players.

Sally (Surprised) “Hey, its Nick from my class!” (Sally points to Nick)

Nick walks toward Sally, standing next to the bed prop at stage centre .

Nick (Concerned) “Sally, I heard from the ‘Who’s’ that you don’t
know what you want to be. That’s impossible!

(Hopeful) When I grow up I want to be a football player
(points to Visual Arts portrait on the backdrop). I love playing
sport and being in front of big crowds!”

Nick walks toward downstage centre and handballs the football to a student in the
audience.

Nick (Curious) ”What do you want to be when you grow up?”

Student in the audience answers.

Student hand balls the football back to Nick.

Nick runs back toward Sally , again pretending to dodge players.

Nick (Enthusiastic) “That’s awesome! Hey Sally, do you think you
would want to be a football player, too?” (looks toward Sally
with a beaming smile)

Sally (Hesitant) “I love watching football, but that’s not what I want
to be” (fiddles with the duvet on the bed, sadly).

Nick (Reassuring) “That’s okay, Sally. You’ll figure it out soon.

I need to get back to the game, it’s the last quarter and the Pies
are up by 4 points. Wish me luck!”

Nick waves as he exits to the left-hand side of stage, running and kicking the ball to
himself.

Play snippet of ‘Eagle Rock!’, by Daddy Cool (0:12 to 0:20).

‘Bad Case of Loving You’, by Robert Palmer (0:32 to 0:40).
Pen scratching paper sound effect.

Bree enters from right-hand side of stage, writing notes on a clipboard, wearing a white
cloak and stethoscope.

Bree appears stressed, walking frantically between upstage right and downstage right

Bree looks up to see Sally sitting on the bed prop , looking sad.

Bree walks around the bed, cautiously, peering over Sally’s shoulder.

Bree (Surprised) “Sally! What’s wrong?”

Sally turns around and stands up immediately.

Sally appears surprised at seeing Bree.

Sally (Melancholic) “Bree, I feel upset that I don’t know what I
want to be when I’m older. Everyone seems to know except
me. Do you know?”

Bree (Joyful) “In fact, I do. When I grow up, I want to be a doctor!
(points to Visual Arts portrait on the backdrop). I want to help
sick people and learn all about the body.

Let me use this to see if I can figure it out for you. After all, it
helped me!” (places stethoscope over Sally’s chest).

(Concerned) Now Sally, this isn’t working at all. All I can hear is
your breathing and heart beating (Bree looks at the audience
confused).

(Optimistic) Maybe this might work. Yell out the first job that
comes to your mind!”

Sally “Pizza! Oh, that didn’t seem to work (looks away,

embarrassed).

Well, Bree, I do love helping people, too, but a doctor is not
what I want to be“ (Sally shakes head).

Bree (Optimistic) “That’s okay, Sally. You will steer yourself
somewhere without even knowing.

(Stressed) Now, I have to be quick. I have a patient waiting for
me.”

Bree hurries off the right-hand side of stage, writing notes on the clipboard.

Bree realises she has gone the wrong way, so hurries across the stage to the left-hand
side.

hair to the audience.

Julia dances towards downstage right and across to downstage left , pointing to the
audience.

Wearing a bright pink dress and holds a microphone, lip-syncing the song.

Music stops playing.

Julia (Confident) “Sally! Come and sing with me. We can both be
music artists when we grow up (points to Visual Arts portrait on
the backdrop). La la laaaaa!” (Julia sings)

What do you think, Sally?” (Julia looks toward Sally,

promisingly)

Sally “Julia, I love listening to and making music but that’s not what I
want to be either.” (falls down onto the bed prop, dramatically)

Julia (Optimistic) “You’re a great singer, Sally, but if you don’t think
you’d enjoy singing for the rest of your life, that’s okay. You’ll
figure something out.

Before I go to my next concert, I have heard that Chianna
knows something we all don’t, about how to plan your future.
Perhaps you can talk to her!”

Sally (Hopeful) “Thanks, Julia! I’ll find her now.” (Sally jumps to her
feet)

Sally exits to the left-hand side of stage to get changed out of the pyjamas, running.

Chianna (Concerned) “Sally, what’s the rush?” (Chianna looks toward
Sally with worry)

Sally (Mesmerised) “This is an absurd dream, but I think it’s trying to
help me figure out a problem of mine.” (taps finger on chin)

Chianna (Curious) “What’s that, Sally?” (Chianna stands up and leans
in, in curiosity)

Sally (Overwhelmed) “Everyone seems to know what they want to be
when they grow up. I still don’t know, and, at this rate, I don’t
think I ever will. Can you…”

Chianna interrupts.

Chianna “Sally, Sally calm down! You don’t need to know right now. In
fact, you don’t ever need to know exactly what you should be
doing. I don’t know either, I just know I love ballet (points to
Visual Arts portrait on the backdrop). So, don’t worry, Sally. You
will somehow get where you need to be.

What’s making you happy right now?”

Sally (Reflective) “Spending time with my friends and family, and
diving on the weekends.”

Chianna (Calmly) “Then, Sally, that’s all you need to do for now…

(Concerned) Wait, don’t we have school today? You should
probably wake up now.”

—

SLIDE 7

Sally and Chianna run off stage to the left-hand side (outfit change into school uniforms).

Bree, Nick and Julia set up desks and chairs in the middle of the stage, in three rows (1, 2
and 2) .

Chianna and Sally walk in with their books and place them on the two desks in the third
row.
