ANALYSIS STORY OF THE NECKLACE BY GUY DE MAUPASSANT

A. CHARACTERS
1. Mathilde Loisel
She was Mr. Loisel’s wife. She was pretty and smart. She never felt enough in her life
because she wanted everything that rich people had. Mathilde Liosel wanted people to see her
as a rich person. Her charachter is selfish and unable to accept her life condition.
Based on the main part or roles in this story, Mathide Loisel belongs to main or major
character. Because the story focuses on Matilda Loisel and most of the story is talking about
her from the beginning until the end of the story.
2. Mr Loisel
He was a clerk for Ministry of Education . He was a kind man because he loved
Mathilde and treated her so much well. He was patient and also a hard-worker.
Based on the main part or roles in this story, Mr. Loisel belongs to main or major character.
Because the story focuses on Robert Loisel and almost of the story is talking about him from
the beginning until the end of the story.
3. Madame Forestier
Madame Forestier is a Mathilde’s friend, she is a glamour and rich woman, and she have
friendly and merciful character.
B. PLOT
1. Exposition
There’s a beautiful woman who never grateful for her life.
Mathilde Loisel and her husband were living with unpretentious life. They can’t be
called poor but also rich. Matilda was never grateful with what she has. She wanted
everything that rich people have. “She suffered endlessly, feeling herself born for every
delicacy and luxury.”
2. Rising Action
Mathilde refuses to attend the party without a suitable dress and wants her husband
purchasing a new dress and she borrowed the jewelry from Ann (Madame Forestier).
When her husband Robert Loisel offered her to go to the party, she rejected it because
she don’t want to go to the party with old dress and she was getting cry. After Robert knew
what that she meant. “Nothing. Only i haven’t a dress and i can’t go to this party. Give
your invitation to some friends of your whose wife will be turned out better than i shall”
3. Climax
Mathilde lost the jewelry.
Mathilde finally is going to the party with a new dress and jewelry. Everyone looked her
as a rich woman. Finally at home, Matilda was getting shock because she can’t find the
jewelry. They were getting panic because the jewelry is so expensive.”She took off the
garments in which she had wrapped her shoulders, so as to see herselfin all her glory
before the mirror. But suddenly she uttered a cry. The necklace was no longer round her
neck!”
4. Resolution
They life was changing and they just knowing if the jewelry is not expensive, it just
imitation jewelry.
After they borrowed money to other people, their life was changing because they needed
ten years to pay off the debts. In the end. Mathilde was getting old and she shocked after
knew that the jewelry which lost was a fake and that’s not worth or cheap.”Madame Forestier,
deeply moved, took her two hands. “Oh, my poor Mathilde! But mine was imitation. It
was worth at the very most five hundred francs...!”

C. CONFLICT
There are two kind of conflict
1. Internal Conflict : Mathilde felt that she was a poor woman, her excessive pride,
materialism. ( Mathilde Loisel v herself).
2. External Conflict : Althoug Mr. Loisel is tolerant of Mathlide’s behavior and wants to
please her. (Mr. Loisel v Mathilde’s different values).

D. SETTING
1. Place
The setting of the story of the Necklace are Mr. Loisel and Matilda house, Madame
Forestier’s house and The house of Mr. Loisel’s friend party.
2. Time
In the morning and at night
3. Function of Setting
Function of the setting in this story is as background. Since the conflict of the story is
about Mr. Loisel and Mathilde Loisel struggled to find out the necklace, so its relationship
with the setting is not significant. Even the setting is changed, the conflict still can happen.
E. THEME
The theme of this story is “ Being grateful is the key of happiness ”, this story raises
some aspects, that is about social life and economy.
In this story, Mathilde who lived with enough things still looking for the things that she
forced herself to get those. After she got everything what she wants, she was suffered by
herself that never grateful with she has and her life to be sorrow life.
