Qualitative Data:

Time spent during the lockdown is boring where I came with a good idea to utilize it

for a gainful purpose. Making a paper helicopter was an easy and an engaging task.
The task could be taken to the next level by quantifying the descent time of the
paper helicopter. This reinforced my knowledge in mechanics with a fun element too.
I decided to vary the length of the blade and study the descent time of the paper
helicopter.
 I have a keen interest in kinetics of automobile, the experiment of the descent of the
paper helicopter is a small way in the times now to satisfy it.
The materials that I have used in my experiment are:
1. Bond paper
2. Scissors
3. Pencil
4. Scale
5. Stopwatch in the smartphone
 Strength of the paper:
Bond paper, newspaper and card paper were tested for their strength by wetting them in 1
teaspoon of water. The bond paper showed the highest strength followed by the card paper
and newspaper, which showed the least strength. This can be attributed to the wetting
capacity of the paper. Therefore I chose bond paper which is comparatively more water
resistant.
 Shape and size of the helicopter:
The shape of the helicopter consists of 2 blades of the same dimensions(Length and width)
with a stem of the helicopter with the same length. Further for collecting data the length of
the blades was varied keeping the width and the length of the stem constant.
The length of the blades was varied as follows: 8.3, 7.3 and 6.3 cm respectively for which
descent time was measured from a constant height of 180 cm which was only dropped by
me being mindful about the force with which it was dropped.
The helicopter after being dropped, the blades rotated a clockwise direction and it’s descent
was stable throughout the experiment.
