PART – A

1. What is the effect of change is supply voltage on starting torque of induction motor?
[N/D 2015], [A/M 2016], [A/M 2017]
Large reduction in starting torque because the starting torque because the starting torque varies
as the square of voltage applied to the stator.

2. List out the methods of speed control of cage type three phase induction motor. [N/D
2015]
i) Voltage control. ii) Frequency control iii)V/F control iv)Pole changing method

3. Why is a starter needed for starting a large capacity induction motor? [N/D 2016] OR
What is the need of starter for induction motor? [A/M 2018] OR Why is starter necessary
to start a three phase induction motor?
When a three phase induction motor is switched on at normal supply voltage, heavy current will
flow through the motor because at the time of starting there is no back emf. An induction motor,
when directly switched on, takes five to seven times its full load current and it develops only 1.5
times full load torque. This initial inrush of excessive current is objectionable because, it will
produce large line voltage drop. This will affect the operation of other electrical equipments
connected to the same line. Due to this, starters are used for starting the three phase induction
motor.

4. What are the starting methods of three phase induction motor? [N/D 2016]
i)Direct On Line starter ii)Primary Resistance starter iii)Star-Delta starter
iv)Autotransformer starter v) Rotor resistance starter

5. State two advantages of speed control of induction motor by injecting an e.m.f in the
rotor circuit. [A/M 2017]
i) Any speed within the working range can be obtained.
ii) If the rotary converter is over excited, it will take a leading current which compensates for
the lagging current drawn by SRM and hence improves the power factor of the system.

6. Why rotor rheostat starter is is unsuited for a squirrel cage motor? [N/D 2017]
The rotor rheostat starter is unsuited for a squirrel cage motor because the rotor bars are
permanently short circuited.

7. What are the conditions for regenerative breaking of an induction motor to be possible?
[N/D 2017]
When the supply frequency is fixed, regenerative braking is possible only for speeds greater
than synchronous speed. With variable supply frequency, it cannot be obtained for speed below
synchronous speed.

8. What are the advantages of slip power recovery scheme? [A/M 2018]
 Power dissipation at slip ring is reduced.
 Improves the overall efficiency of the system.

9. List the advantages of rotor resistance starter based induction motor starting. [A/M
2019]
 Limits the starting current.
 Starting torque gets improved
 Power factor gets improved

10. What type of braking is employed during deceleration of an induction motor? [A/M
2019]
DC Dynamic braking is employed during deceleration of an induction motor.

1. The rotor of a 4 pole, 50Hz slip ring induction motor has a resistance of 0.3 Ω per phase and
runs at 1440 rpm at full load. Calculate the external resistance per phase which must be added to
lower the speed to 1320 rpm, the torque being the same as before.
