2. Differentiate the processes of anabolism and catabolism.

Catabolism

Catabolism refers to chemical reactions that result in the breakdown of

more complex organic molecules into simpler substances.

Catabolic reactions usually release energy that is used to drive chemical
reactions.

Anabolism

Anabolism refers to chemical reactions in which simpler substances are

combined to form more complex molecules.  Anabolic reactions usually
require energy.

Anabolic reactions build new molecules and/or store energy.
b) Give the complete pathway of the catabolism of one mole of glucose under an anaerobic
condition.

(a) How is the energy from the sun converted to the chemical forms of ATP and NADPH in
plants?
Show how the ATP and NADPH are used to make sugar in the plants.

Under a stressful condition, your body produces a hormone that triggers a series of reactions
that provide instant energy. Show this series of triggering reactions.
Explain the change in the ionic forms of aspartic acid when it is titrated with acid and alkali.
Draw the titration curve and label pKa1, pKa2, pKa3 and pI. Show the ionic forms of aspartic acid
at these four points.
