Software Update Tool (USB) for Aastra 620d / 630d 2012/02

1. Introduction
This document describes “step by step” the USB Firmware Update Tool for the Aastra 620d/630d
handsets.
The purpose of this tool is to update the firmware of handsets independently of the download over air
capability of the DECT system being used.

3. Requirements
- PC or Laptop with Windows XP SP3 , Vista SP2 or Windows 7 (32bit and 64bit is supported)
- one USB Type A to mini B USB (5pin) cable part No.: 68759

4. Handset
The USB port may be set to “charge only” by default, depending on the initial firmware version.
Before connecting the USB cable, you have to enable the data ability (VCom) of the USB port:
Start up the handset > press the menu key > type ***76# to enter the service menu.
Select USB mode > Ok > set the mode to VCom and save the settings. Exit with ESC
Since Firmware 3.01 you can change the USB mode using > *4# then select Vcom and save
the settings.
If the handset run Intelligate TDM DECT firmware (e.g. if a Menu key on the left side is present),
no USB port configuration is required. Only the generic firmware stream e.g. version 2.x or 3.x
support the *xy based service procedures to display the firmware version or USB port configuration.
5. Update Tool
Do not connect the A620d/A630d phone first.
5.1 Start the Update Tool e.g. Update4.00withBT1.2.1.exe and accept the End User License
Agreement (EULA).

(Select: I agree, click Continue)

5.2 Select your Language (German, English or French).

(Select: e.g. English, click OK)

6. USB driver installation (only needed, if the handset is connected the first time to this PC, if
not, proceed with step 7).
If the handset is connected to this PC the first time, the operating system needs to install a new
hardware driver for the A620d/A630d.
The update tool includes the driver information, to install the driver, administrative rights will be
required. Start the update tool with administrative rights.
6.1 Store the driver information file on the PC.
Click on the Version button in the Update tool start screen and click Save INF file to store the USB
driver for the A620d/A630d on your PC.
The file name can be named as e.g. a600d.inf . Click on the Save button.

6.2 Windows XP driver installation

Connect the handset to the PC now!
6.2.1 The “Found new hardware wizard” will appear. Please follow the instructions.

(Select: No, not this time, click Next) (Select: Install from a list or specific location, click Next)

6.2.2 Select the source folder with the stored file

(Select: Include this location in the search and browse to the location, where the driver was stored in step 6.1, click Next)

6.3 Windows 7 driver installation

Connect the handset to the PC now!
6.3.1 Press the Windows Start button and select Computer / Manage

(Computer: Click on the right mouse key) (Double-click on Manage)

6.3.2 Select the Device Manager and update the driver software

(right Mouse click on M@cx VCOM-Port) (Select: Locate and install driver software manually)

6.3.3 Select the source folder with the stored driver

(Browse to the location of step 6.1, click Next) (Select: Install this driver Software anyway)

7. Firmware Update
As soon the handset USB mode is configured and the driver is installed, you can start with the
firmware update. Start the Update tool and click on Continue.

The Update wizard will search for the A620d/A630d device and display the current handset software.
Click on Continue and select the firmware version you like to upload into the handset.

If your handset is running on the firmware version 129.xxx.xxx (Intelligate), you have to enable
Bluetooth in the handset menu > Settings > Bluetooth first for a successful Bluetooth update.
To start the update, click on Continue and wait until the Update is finished.
The handset will now show that a new firmware version is available and reboot.

To verify which firmware version is running on the handset, go to the menu and press *1#
(generic software stream only).
If you update between the Intelligate and generic software versions and the handset has already
an old software of the other stream, the update might only switch to the other software.
In this case just run the update again.
Before updating further handsets, you have to restart the tool.
8. Bluetooth
The Bluetooth firmware in the A620d/A630d can not be updated over the DECT infrastructure.
This can only be done using the USB Software Update Tool.
The Bluetooth firmware does not downgrade automaticly if the handset software change e.g.
if the DECT system apply an older software version to the device after USB update.
If you want to run another handset firmware than provided by the update tool,
check that the Bluetooth firmware is compatible with this handset firmware.
To check which Bluetooth firmware version is running on the handset, enable Bluetooth,
go to the menu and press *1#. e.g. BT: 1.2.1 (generic software stream only)
Using the Intelligate and A400 Software go to
Menu > Settings > General > Administration > Diagnostics > Versions

9.Troubleshooting
When I connect the phone to my PC using the USB cable, nothing will happen on the PC there is only
a beep from the handset.

Check if the USB mode on the handset has been set to “VCom” ( see step 4. Handset )
