2.14. Recognize the music staff and treble clef sign.
Learning Students will:
Objectives  Recall the elements of a staff and treble clef (B) by looking at songs on Rockin’ Recorder website
 Recall (B) fingering position of B (P) by demonstrating to the teacher (M)
 Apply (B) fingering position of A (P) by playing along to “A Groovy Tune”
 Demonstrate (B) proper tonguing and rhythms (P) by playing along to “A Groovy Tune”

Time: Content/Description Notes/Assessments:
Introduction: Review of Positions
 Hand out recorders
3 mins  Ask students to place recorders in floor position, rest position, and pit
position (review)
Body: Learning A
 Review B fingering: ask students to show you the proper finger placement
for the note B
 Warm up: get students to repeat rhythms back to you- review proper
tonguing if needed as well as proper amount of air

 Pull up the song “A Groovy Tune” on Rockin’ Recorder Website
 Ask students about the song: what does the C mean? What do the dots
mean? What is the note on the staff that they see? What kinds of rhythms
do we see?
 Once students are able to figure out that A is the note in this song, teach
them the fingering for A: index finger and middle finger covering the top
26 mins two holes, and thumb covering back hole
 Ask them to play four counts of A together
 Get students to put recorders in floor position and clap along to A Groovy
Tune
 Once students seem comfortable with the rhythm, get them to play along to
it
 Play with variations: only students with glasses play, or people sitting in
the middle line, etc.
 If students have it: move on to the BA Blues. First clap it out and talk
about it. When students are ready, get them to play along with it
Closure:
1 min  Remind students to put their recorders in mouth-piece first, put them in the
green bin and line up at the door
