2. DESCRIPTIONS
GRP Filament wound tanks are designed and manufactured with low maintenance, low cost and
extreme durability in mind. The cylindrical types tanks are manufactured with filament winding
methods, these kinds of tank offer an ideal solution to many industrial problems.
Goodwin Composites fibreglass-reinforced tanks are filament-wounded on steel mandrels in our
expansive composites facilities. In the filament-winding process, resin-saturated fiberglass strands are
wound onto a rotating mandrel’s surface in a precise pattern. Mandrels are oriented either vertically or
horizontally, depending on the type and size of tank being manufactured. The structures can be
manufactured with properties that are pound-for-pound stronger than steel.
3. FEATURES
! Corrosion Resistance ! Suitable to use H2S Gas Area ! Impervious to Bacteriological growth !
Lightweight ! For use in all climates and exposure to sunlight ! High Strength! Non conductive and
Non magnetic ! Long life ! Thermally inert ! Easy installation ! Low Maintenance ! Pleasing
appearance ! Fire Retardant! Non-Toxic
4. APPLICABLE INDUSTRY
Filament-wounded fibreglass tanks are used in a wide range of industries, and are particularly suitable
in corrosive environments where other materials are not a good long-term solution. Ideal applications
for Goodwin tanks include Water storage, Liquid waste storage, Chemical storage, Corrosive chemical
storage, Food-grade liquids and also included General Industry, Marine, Offshore, Waste Water, Wet
Wells, Pulp & Paper Plants, Over Ground Area, Plating Operations & Petrochemical Plants.
7. STORAGE REQUIREMENTS
All tanks must be vented. Filament winding tanks are design for operation at atmospheric only.
Filament winding tanks shall be capable of storing liquids with specific gravity up to 1.4.
8. DESIGN CRITERA
Internal loads & pressure
Tank shall withstand 3-5 psig hydrostatic
Pressure test with 5:1 safety factor
Tank shall be designed to support accessories such as ladder, fill pipe, drain and outlet.
9. BENEFITS
Corrosion Resistant
No rusting, peeling or flaking even under the most aggressive conditions in any part of the world.
Lightweight &Durable
Allows easy handling, cutting, fixing, lifting and installation.
Cost Effective
Extremely long life compared to metal and other plastic materials. Completely maintenance-free
High Strength And Stiffness
High glass content and continuous reinforcement, GRP products give extremely high strength and
stiffness compared to molded GRP and other engineering plastic.
High Impact Resistant & Elastic
Returns to original position without any permanent deflection or distortion within recommended
allowable loads.

Superior UV Protection
Our integral UV protection system gives long-term shield against the damaging effects of UV rays.
Non-Conductive & Non-Interfering
Comply international electrical safety specifications. Allows transmission of radio waves. Non-
magnetic.
Low Thermal Conductivity & Expansion Rate
Will not transfer heat unlike metal. No problem of expansion under heat.
Fire Retardant
Complies to ASTM-E84 and BS 476 standards.
Easy to Joint
These permanent joints which, consist of a laminate of glass fibre mat and tissue with resin.
Predominantly use directly at job site, these types of joints guarantees safe and long-lasting
connections that accommodate all axial strengths.
The component materials must be custom tailor to the application. Many different types of glass fibre
have been made, ‘E-Glass, ECR Glass, Woven Roving Fabric & Surface Tissue Veil’. Commonly used is ‘E’
glass or ‘ECR’ Glass. ‘E’-Glass a low alkali content borosilicate glass and ‘ECR’-Glass a High alkali
content borosilicate glass as it bends high mechanical properties with good corrosion resistance. Also
this both type of glass mat are available emulation bonded and powder bonded for the different type of
usage.
The forms of glass fibre reinforcements most commonly used in corrosion protection applications are:
Chopped strand mat consists of randomly distributed strands (usually 50mm in length, “chopped”
from continuous strands of glass fibre) bonded together to form a uniform mat.
Liquid binder, usually based on a polyvinyl acetate emulsion (E-Glass)
Liquid binder, usually based on a polyvinyl acetate emulsion (ECR-Glass)
Powder binder usually a bisphenol-polyester (E-Glass)
Direct Roving for tension member (E-Glass)
Continues Roving (ECR-Glass)
Surface Veil – Tissue Mat for Anti-Corrosion Resistance (C-Glass)
Owen Roving – Fabric (E-Glass)
All types of chopped strand mat have been used successfully in corrosion protection applications.
However, laminates based on liquid or emulsion bonded chopped strand mat have been known to be
more prone to osmotic blistering than those made with powder bonded mat especially under long
periods of chemical loading. For this reason, powder bonded mat has been preferred in chemical
resistant applications.
Surface Tissue or Veil C-Glass: Popularly known as surfacing veil or surfacing mat, this consists of thin
randomly distributed fibrous mat designed to reinforce the resin rich layer of a GRP molding in contact
with the chemical environment.
They are generally available in a range of weights, from 300 to 600 grams/M2. They are manufactured
from glass or synthetic fibre such as polyester, the latter being usually preferred as it provides a richer
polyester content corrosion resistant surface along with the resin.
