2. DESCRIPTIONS
GRP Filament wound tanks are designed and manufactured with low maintenance, low cost and
extreme durability in mind. The cylindrical types tanks are manufactured with filament winding
methods, these kinds of tank offer an ideal solution to many industrial problems.
Goodwin Composites fibreglass-reinforced tanks are filament-wounded on steel mandrels in our
expansive composites facilities. In the filament-winding process, resin-saturated fiberglass strands are
wound onto a rotating mandrel’s surface in a precise pattern. Mandrels are oriented either vertically or
horizontally, depending on the type and size of tank being manufactured. The structures can be
manufactured with properties that are pound-for-pound stronger than steel.

10. GRP COMPOSITES

Composites (Glass Reinforced Plastic) encompass a wide range of materials and performance
characteristics. Composites are an engineering material that consists of a thermo set resin and a Fibre
reinforcement. The liquid resin is combined with the Fibre reinforcement, in the molding process, and
cures into a solid laminate. There are many types of composites resins and reinforcements and each of
these imparts specific properties to the GRP product. There are some major family groups of resin used
in composites fabrication.
Orthophthalic Polyester Resin
Isopathalic Polyester Resin
Bisphenol A Epoxy Based Vinyl Ester Resin
The polyester resins, with which we are concerned, are unsaturated polyesters, prepared from dihydric
or polyhydric alcohols reacted with a dibasic or polybasic acid (or anhydride) and dissolved in a liquid
monomer such as styrene.
If corrosion resistance, a vinyl ester resin would be a candidate. If high strength is critical, enhanced
corrosion resistance is required, elevated temperatures will be encountered or cost is an overriding
factor. The resin system is selected based on the functional and cost requirements of the product.
A number of reinforcement fibre used in composites. Glass fibre is used in over 90% of all
composites. In the realm of glass fiber, there are many “styles” of reinforcement. Depending on the
molding process and the strength requirements of the product there are many options.
Glass fibre is available in random fibre orientation in the form of chopped strand mat. Lightweight
textile fabrics, heavy woven materials, knitted fabrics and unidirectional fabrics, all of which serve
specific purposes in composite design.

The component materials must be custom tailor to the application. Many different types of glass fibre
have been made, ‘E-Glass, ECR Glass, Woven Roving Fabric & Surface Tissue Veil’. Commonly used is ‘E’
glass or ‘ECR’ Glass. ‘E’-Glass a low alkali content borosilicate glass and ‘ECR’-Glass a High alkali
content borosilicate glass as it bends high mechanical properties with good corrosion resistance. Also
this both type of glass mat are available emulation bonded and powder bonded for the different type of
usage.
The forms of glass fibre reinforcements most commonly used in corrosion protection applications are:
Chopped strand mat consists of randomly distributed strands (usually 50mm in length, “chopped”
from continuous strands of glass fibre) bonded together to form a uniform mat.
Liquid binder, usually based on a polyvinyl acetate emulsion (E-Glass)
Liquid binder, usually based on a polyvinyl acetate emulsion (ECR-Glass)
Powder binder usually a bisphenol-polyester (E-Glass)
Direct Roving for tension member (E-Glass)
Continues Roving (ECR-Glass)
Surface Veil – Tissue Mat for Anti-Corrosion Resistance (C-Glass)
Owen Roving – Fabric (E-Glass)
All types of chopped strand mat have been used successfully in corrosion protection applications.
However, laminates based on liquid or emulsion bonded chopped strand mat have been known to be
more prone to osmotic blistering than those made with powder bonded mat especially under long
periods of chemical loading. For this reason, powder bonded mat has been preferred in chemical
resistant applications.
Surface Tissue or Veil C-Glass: Popularly known as surfacing veil or surfacing mat, this consists of thin
randomly distributed fibrous mat designed to reinforce the resin rich layer of a GRP molding in contact
with the chemical environment.
They are generally available in a range of weights, from 300 to 600 grams/M2. They are manufactured
from glass or synthetic fibre such as polyester, the latter being usually preferred as it provides a richer
polyester content corrosion resistant surface along with the resin.

23. CONSTRUCTION METHODOLOGY

The Methods of GRP Filament Winding Tanks Manufacturing Procedure Guidelines are as Following
Manner:
GRP Filament Winding Tanks manufactured by filament wounded winding application methods. In
general, all profiles are reinforced by fibreglass chemical resistance mat and direct roving. Fabric
woven roving mat in the alternate application will absorbs longitudinal forces and avoid deflections.
Their structure can bear high stress.
DESIGN
GRP Construction GRP Filament Winding Tanks have a Vinyl Ester Resin matrix reaching a glass
content of 65%. The GRP Filament Winding Tanks could be produced with Vinyl Ester Resin or
Isopathalic matrix or with self-extinguishing properties. Colors are as per the specification.
SURFACE
GRP Filament Winding Tanks can additionally have a surface coating (gelcote with UV protection) to
provide an especially resin rich surface, so the profiles are UV-resistant and weather proof. The lugs
for the GRP Filament Winding Tanks are available as preassembled modules.

24. MANUFACTURING PROCEEDURE

Aboveground Cylindrical Vertical Storage tanks are single-walled, manufactured to ASTM D 3299
Standards by Filament-wound process.
The tank shell is manufactured by the process call “Filament – Winding”.
The process begins by selecting the appropriate mandrel (cylindrical mold) and applying a
separating agent (mylar film).
A resin-rich barrier is construction by winding a surface tissue and impregnating it with the
appropriate resin system conductive for the type of service the tank is intended to.
On tope of this layer, succeeding layers of hoop and helical winding patterns are constructed to
reinforce the tank against hoop and longitudinal loadings to a pre-determined thickness.
On occasions, other types of glass reinforcements are introduced to attain certain specific loading
requirements.
Cylinders produced by this process exhibit high, modulus of laminate – a property that tells the
strength of materials.

Specific gravity of laminate is at the range of 1.5 to 1.76 g/ml.

Tank end-caps on the other-hand, is constructed by open molding process with the same laminate
construction method as the tank shell.
Tank shell and end-caps are assembled by joining it with a pre-determined stacks of a number of
glass fiber reinforcements forming the laminate joint overlays.
Required fittings are then located and fixed to the tank by hand-lay-up in strict adherence to
“GOODWIN QATAR WLL” QA/AC manual and appropriate international quality codes.
The final step is top-coatings with a UV-inhibited topcoat after passing all necessary production test.
The factory-finished tanks, stainless steel or steel lifting lugs and tie-down lugs are integrally wound
on the tank. If required, GRP tanks can also be fitted at the factory with ladders, mounts, piping,
floats, sensors, transducers, pumps, and wiring, simplifying and minimizing on-site installation.

25. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Cylindrical horizontal tanks are mounted on either concrete or metal saddles for the specific process
applications. Most suitable for those plants that have height restrictions, the horizontal tanks are
available in the form of cylindrical, vertical with flat bottom and conical top. The tanks require only
plain RCC platform with sand / bitumen surfacing for the mounting and are highly useful for bulk
storage of chemical, these are economical and occupy minimum floor space with full ground support.
