ASSIGNMENT QUESTION PAPER

Subject Code: AE6502 Semester: V

Subject: AIRCRAFT STRUCTURES -II Year: III
TWO MARKS

1. Differentiate between symmetric and unsymmetrical bending.

2. Define principal axes and give an expression to determine them.
3. Define neutral axes and give an expression to determine it.
4. What do you understand by unsymmetrical bending? Explain a method to find the stresses in
an unsymmetrical section.
5. Shows typical stress distribution for a open/closed undergoing unsymmetrical bending.
6. Draw bending stress variation across the depth for (a) rectangular (b) I section
7. Write down the expression for orientation of the neutral axis of beam with unsymmetrical
cross section in x-y plane and subjected bending moments Mx and My.
8. Bending of symmetric section subjected skew load will be (symmetric / un symmetric) explain
9.what are the assumption made in derivation of theory of simple bending equation?

10.what is meant by product of inertia? what is the value when the cross section symmetrical
with respect any one of the axis.

TEN MARKS

1. Derive an Expression for the bending stress in an unsymmetrical section subjected to Mx and
My using Generalized Method and modify this equation with respect to neutral axis and
Principal Axis.
2. The thin-walled beam section shown in Fig. is subjected to a bending moment Mx applied in a
negative sense. Find the position of the neutral axis and the maximum direct stress in the section.
3. A thin-walled, cantilever beam of unsymmetrical cross-section supports shear loads at
its free end as shown in Fig. Calculate the value of direct stress at the extremity of the
lower flange (point A) at a section half-way along the beam if the position of the shear
loads is such that no twisting of the beam occurs.

4. For a beam section shown in fig. has four stringers. The area of the four stringers A, B,
C and D are 6.25, 3.125, 4.5 and 6 cm2 respectively. Find the stresses in all the four
stringers of the section due to MX = 50 kNm and MY = -20 kNm where x and y are the
centroidal axes. Assume that webs and walls are ineffective bending.
