Original Work Proposal

Introduction and Statement of Purpose

Pattern recognition is vital in epidemiology. Epidemiology is the study of mass disease,

usually having to do with overwhelming amounts of deaths, sickness, and suffering. I believe

that due to lifestyle choices, heart attacks, along with other weight and fat related diseases, are

the new epidemic. Although epidemiologists study demographic and societal patterns combined

with regional economy and health security to analyze most epidemics, the epidemic of heart and

vessel disease is already well mapped out; the cure for fatal heart disease is not. Using

nephrology and cardiology charts, I plan to find certain patterns of medicines, certain vital signs,

and minute details to find patterns which have all led to heart attacks.

In order to succeed and carry out my intentions this will require the utility of my previous

knowledge and experience that I was able to gain through the various encounters with

professionals. Due to the extensive shadowing I have done throughout high school, I was able

to become familiar with the causes and effects of different health crises, such as obesity. While

the cause may be obvious, the effects are severely detrimental to your health, and are not so

physically obvious. One of the many reasons that being overweight can affect one’s health, is

that it causes an increase in cholesterol and triglyceride levels, which indirectly leads to the

event of a heart attack. Equipped with previously attained knowledge such as this, I hope to go

into this product confident and end up successfully providing research papers to my mentor and

other Cardiologists, in order to show them the specifics of the causes and effects of heart

disease.

Review of Skills and Research

The first thing I will look for in charts are vital signs. Signs such as heart rate, blood

pressure, weight, height, respirations, etc. are usually tell tale signs of troubled blood vessels.
These measures, thought effective in diagnosis, have already been mapped out to find a

correlation between them and heart disease. Still, I will map them out in order to find an overlay

between these and other signs. Another influential factor is lifestyle. Factors such as exercise,

sleep, stress, and eating habits are key in diagnosing the risk of heart attacks. These factors,

along with vital signs, will be mapped out to see trends in the correlation between amounts in

each factor and eventual diagnosis. A third component is genealogy. Genetics and heredity are

known factors that influence the risk of heart attacks. Certain populations, blood groups, and

family lineages are more susceptible to pulmonary disease so an overlay in these can be helpful

in further narrowing down early diagnosis methods. The last topic is medicine. Medicines often

have lasting side effects which can be left unknown. Certain medicines could also lead to the

development of arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis. Tracking these medicines and finding an

overlay between patients who suffered heart attacks and their medicine history could help

doctors point to certain drugs that might cause these symptoms. Doctors could also be

encouraged to steer clear of the drugs.

Methodology

This methodology has not been finalized yet, but is what I have developed based on my

initial views of my product. First, I will need to familiarize myself with the information that will be

repeatedly approached by me as a researcher, such as how obesity specifically attacks the

health of an individual, and what I need to specifically measure in order to track this. I will be

able to gain this information through my mentor. Secondly, gathering the necessary materials

and creating a plan for how I will measure and track the health of individuals will be required. I

will need to be able to find certain people who would be willing to participate in this activity,

where I measure different aspects of their body such as height, weight, blood pressure, heart

rate, and more. After this I will assign individuals certain daily tasks that may disrupt certain
aspects of their health minorly. And view the small scale effects of it. After collecting my data, I

will do further research into my findings, such as examining cardiology charts. I will then move to

a real world aspect, where I will do online research and find patterns in factors that may affect

obesity. Through this collection of data, I will make a final research assessment, and present it

to various Cardiologists, including my mentor. Then, I hope to work with these doctors and other

organizations in order to minimize the causes of these diseases that lead to heart attacks.

Materials

Although the full extent of the materials that may be used may not be discovered yet,

there are several significant materials that will help me in order to complete my task of creating

this research paper. First of all, the tools available to measure heart rate and other

measurements could be provided at the practices of my mentor, Dr. Shafiq, where the fee is

nonexistent. Materials such as a sphygmomanometer, measuring tape, weight scales, and a

heart rate monitor can all be provided by my mentor. Through these tools at my disposal I will

be able to take the necessary measurements needed. Secondly, a portable electronic, such as

a laptop or phone will be useful, as it could provide me with information I may need to search

up, allow me to take notes depending on my location, and take physical documentation of

something such as a photo. Because I am already in possession of these materials, there is no

further fee attributed towards the acquisition of these devices. Overall, the materials I will be

using do not come with a cost, as these materials are either provided by my mentor or have

already been purchased for uses other than this specific product, however can be used in this

case. However, measurements that may be taken in person by the people who may participate

in my study will have to be provided in person. Timings of sleep, exercise, and types of food

eaten will need to be provided. Something that may have a monetary value is the purchase of a

gym membership or specific workout instruments, if not already purchased. The specific price is
not known due to the range in pricing for the variety of instruments that should be purchased

based on the further specifics of what we are trying to measure physically. The price for these

instruments may vary in the price range from $25-$100.

Conclusions

Finding a connection between all four of these fields can help in early diagnosis and

detection of people at risk of heart attack and prolong their life and restore their lifestyle without

having to go to measures as drastic as surgery or life long medication. I will present this in the

form of a research paper for doctors to read. I believe that from the research paper I will present

to the Cardiologists, this can lead to the growth in awareness about the causes and effects of

the disease. New possibilities and measures for preventing this problem could be developed

and could severely reduce the rates at which problems such as obesity are growing at. If

events, such as the mass development of unhealthy food, are apparent, measures could be

taken to refute this, as this serves as a primary source of obesity for a large portion of the

American population. By providing the specifics, the ability to pinpoint the specific problems at

the source can be used to hinder this advancement, decreasing the problems that are causing

heart attacks. This information that I can provide could be used by Cardiologists in order to

reach out and increase awareness about the problems that ignites heart attacks. In the end, I

hope that my research will be useful and will inform and assist Cardiologists to successfully

eradicate this epidemic.

Timeline/Calendar

Although a specific timeline requires specific research and further details, I have created

a more broad version of my journey through my original work. Starting early January, I will start

my research into the specifics of the causes of heart attacks, which stems from obesity. In

February, I hope to start creating my procedure into my study, and find people who would be
willing to participate in my study. I will then continue my study into mid-March, then start the

process of collecting my data from the research. At this point I will continue to study certain

cardiology charts in order to identify patterns that I recognize and create a common

denominator to identify a certain cause. After this, I will begin my investigation into the causes of

obesity in general, through online research. Using this information, I will be required to make a

research assessment, which addresses the causes and effects of heart attacks, except will go

into the specifics and provide solutions. In late March, I will present this to Cardiologists,

including my mentor. Then, working with the Cardiologists, and other organizations who may

seem interested in my work, I will attempt to find a solution that will work to reduce the impact of

heart attacks, throughout the month of April. This will allow me to practice and make final

changes to be prepared for Final Presentation Night, in mid-May.
