 Program Notes
A contemporary, as well as friend, of Clementi and Haydn, James Hook (1746–1827) was born in
Norwich, England. Among his notable works are oratorios (The Ascension, being the most well known),
a series of serious and comic operas, chamber and keyboard music. Originally one of Hook’s piano
pieces, Sonatina is transcribed here for strings.

Sonatina should be played as marked on the original keyboard version: “Giocoso” ( lightly, humorously).
The minor section at m. 25 may be played a bit “darker” but should return to “Giocoso” at m. 41. An
optional violin 1 solo is offered at m. 34.

About the Arranger

As a major composer of instrumental and vocal music, Carl Strommen is recognized as one of the most
often-performed composers of educational music in the United States.

A graduate of the City College of New York, Mr. Strommen was the Director of Bands at the Mamaroneck
Public Schools, Mamaroneck, New York for many years. He is a member of the faculty at the CW Post
campus of Long Island University, where he teaches orchestration and arranging. Recognized by
ASCAP as a consistent writer in the Standard Awards category, Mr. Strommen is also active as a clinician,
lecturer and guest conductor.
