Statement of the Problem
The intersection of Natividad Lopez St. - Antonio Villegas is
surrounded by various points of interests and attractions such as a
shopping mall, government buildings, schools and condominiums. Traffic
congestion of vehicles and pedestrians is inevitable at the junction,
particularly during rush hours and the narrow streets slow down traffic. To
obtain ideas to accelerate the flow of cars and pedestrians, the time
scheme at this junction must be analysed and studied.
Objectives
The main objective of this study is to create a traffic simulation that would help
analyze and investigate current situation of signal timing and traffic volume in
Natividad Lopez St. – Antonio Villegas Intersection during rush hours

• To identify and categorize the usual mode of transportation used in the said
intersection;
• To Identify all factors contributing to the congestion and delays in the
intersection;
• To identify possible schemes which can improve the existing traffic scenario in
the intersection;
• To determine the time delay and level of service for each schemes using
VISTRO simulation;
• To propose the most effective and efficient scheme that will help improve the
present condition of the intersection.

Conclusions
The most common road vehicles were motorcycles and private cars. Other road
vehicles present in the intersection were taxis, tricycles, trucks, pedicabs, PUVs such as
jeepneys, UV Express and buses

Crucial factors causing the delay in the intersection were:

-The current traffic signal timing was unideal
-The current signal phasing was not efficient in alleviating traffic flow
-Wide-spread jaywalking phenomenon
-Pedicabs / tricycles illegally parked at SM waiting for passengers
-Bottlenecks at the island for vehicles turning right as numerous pedestrians were crossing
the pedestrian crossings
-PUJ and PUB allowing passengers to board and alight anywhere
-Failure to comply with traffic control devices
Proposed traffic management scheme:
Scheme 1: Optimization of Queuing Time of signal lights
Scheme 2: Improvement of Signal Phasing
Scheme 3: Combination of Exclusive Pedestrian and Improvement of Signal
Phasing
Scheme 4: Combination of Construction of Footbridge/Overpass and
Improvement of Signal Phasing

Summary of Time delay and LOS of each schemes:

In view of the results, scheme 4 had the most impact for both morning and
afternoon peak hour out of all schemes. It considerably shortened the intersection
delay of the existing traffic scheme along with minimizing the intersection V/C. The
abrupt change of time delay for this scheme was made possible since pedestrians
were restrained to go or pass by along the intersection. Improving the signal
phasing also took part in the abrupt change in time delay.

Scheme 3 could also be contemplated as its intersection delay was quite

near to Scheme 4. Additionally, scheme 3 and 4 had an equal intersection V/C for
both morning and afternoon peak hour.
