Exercise D. Description of an operations and its result

(a) Annealing a work-harderned steel bar

Instruction : (3) Heat bar to dull red. Allow to cool slowly in sand or ashes. Test
with file.
Result : (iii) This increase the length of the bar but decreases the width and
thickness
Operations : The steel bar heat to dull red colour and then cool it slowly in sand or
ashes. For make sure that its process increase the length of the bar we can checked it
with file.

(b) Carburizing, or case hardening, a mild steel component.

Instruction : (1) Heat a bright red. Dip in carbon rich mixture. Repeat process to
ensure sufficient carbon intake.
Result : (i) The component absorbs carbon into its surface layer, which very
hard when suitably heat treated.
Operations : A mild steel component heat by bright red fire. This process make
component absorbs carbon into its surface layer.

(c) Hardening a chisel

Instruction : (5) Heat chisel to cerry red. Plunge vertically into cold water. Move
about rapidly to prevent cracking.
Result : (ii) This makes the chisel very hard, but brittle
Operations :This process is heted chisel to cerry red colour. Plunge vertical cold
water is made the chisel very hard but brittle.

(d) Normalizing a metal component

Instruction : (6) Heat component to same temperatures as for harderning. Leave to

cool freely in draught-free air.
Result : (vi) Stresses set up in the metal during cold working are removed and
the metal is returned to its normal conditions
Operations : This process is begin with heat the component to same temperatures as
for hardening and the just leave freely in draught-free air.
(e) Upsetting a metal bar

Instruction : (2) Heat bar at part to be upset. Strike end of bar with hammer.
Result : (v) This increases the thickness of the metal bar at the expensive of its
length
Operations :To increase the thickness of the metal bar we strike of end bar with
hammer.

(f) Drawing down a metal bar

Instruction : (4) Heat bar at point to be drawn down. Increase length of bar by using
a fuller. Finish with a flatter.
Result : (iv) This restores the metal’s melleability, which makes it workable
again
Operations :To increase length of bar we heat bar ath point to be drawn. The goal of
this process is to restores the metal’s melleability.
