1 Overview

1.1 NEC’s Advanced Aggregation and IP Migration Solution

In line with the rapid spread of broadband Internet, fixed access networks are being actively reinforced
using cutting-edge technologies such as xDSL and FTTH, thereby improving the scale and reach of
packet backbone networks. Now, mobile operators have access to the flexibility, immediacy and lower
overall OPEX benefits offered by IP mobile backhaul over ubiquitous packet networks, even when used
with last leg backhaul technologies such as NEC's PASOLINK or legacy E1/T1s.

Fig..1.1.1 PASOLINK NEO TE

Driving the need for more cost effective and flexible solutions are four key issues:
 The existing need to reduce backhaul OPEX currently caused by very expensive leased line
services
 The new backhaul capacity impact from the full-scale introduction of 3G and mobile broadband
such as HSxPA, WiFi, WiMAX and soon-to-be LTE
o Higher bandwidth wireless services would also require smaller cell sizes and thus more
cells and more backhaul links to aggregate.
o Higher scalable backhaul bandwidth on a “pay as you need” basis – especially important
for the mobile broadband backhaul where theoretical maximums and initial “demand” is
likely to contrast sharply.
 The need to support different qualities of service for different types of traffic under different SLA’s.
o Split and route voice and data traffic from any aggregated radio access node to ensure
voice receives the QoS expected on circuit switched networks while data is more
economically transported on a packet backbone
o Support the capability to deal with dynamic changes in bandwidth availability upstream or
downstream on a per customer SLA basis, i.e., protecting guaranteed bandwidth services
at the expense of others in case of the partial number of link faults and/or the link
degradation due to the bad weather and so on.
 The need to add “flexibility” points in the network which allow the operator to use or offer various
innovative business models such as:
o Demonstrably fair site / backhaul sharing between multiple mobile operators
o Bandwidth resale to new IP-based services such as WiFi and WiMAX as well as the fixed
line services
o Backhaul outsourcing to other providers from the aggregation point which can now be at
or near the base station

The move to lower cost all-IP networks can not happen overnight so NEC has provided a best in class
solution for mobile network operators or backbone network providers looking to aggregate, filter, route
and eventually migrate backhaul traffic to IP networks while maximizing quality of service, reliability and
granularity of bandwidth reservation.

NEC’s PASOLINK NEO TE Multi-service Transport Unit, along with CX2600 Service Aggregation Switch,
are two new breakthrough solutions designed to satisfy and surpass the aforementioned need for reduced
OPEX, increased capacity, multiple SLAs and flexibility control.

The PASOLINK NEO TE is a compact form factor product designed to fit into constrained spaces at, or
near, base station sites. Although physically much smaller, the PASOLINK NEO TE has been cleverly
designed to accept several interchangeable interface modules so various field configuration and even
reconfiguration after installation can be realized for higher Return on Investment.

By incorporating traffic separation based on the service type (e.g. voice and data) and using traffic
packetization with TDM/ATM emulation function, the existing network can be gradually migrated towards
a more flexible and affordable “All-IP based” network.

1.3 Key Features
This section outlines the key features and benefits of the PASOLINK NEO TE equipment.

1.3.1 Support of various access lines

Provision of several LINE modules enables flexible support for various network configurations.
- Ethernet LINE modules support FE and GbE (10/100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T, 1000BASE-X) as
well as various transport media such as ML-PPP (T1/E1) and EoSDH (STM-1)
- TDM LINE modules support T1/E1 (Channelized T1/E1)
- ATM LINE modules support T1/E1 and STM-1 (T1/E1 IMA, STM-1/OC-3)

1.3.2 Hybrid switching function

The hybrid switching function supports both packet switching and cross-connect, thus enabling flexible
switching per traffic type on a single platform.
- Packet switching: Up to 9.6Gbps, with a scheduler granularity of 64kbps
- TDM cross-connect: Up to 64Mbps in units of 64kbps (DS0)

1.3.3 Advanced QoS functions

Enhanced QoS functions perform finely-tuned bandwidth control and priority control on a per flow basis
without any impact on traffic forwarding performance providing flexible and commercially viable packet
traffic.
- QoS control is configurable on a per CoS basis (4 classes).
- Maximum bandwidth and minimum bandwidth control with deficit round-robin control are
implemented.
- Packet classification functions based on header information (Ethernet/VLAN, ATM, IPv4/v6 etc.)
are provided.
- CLP/ToS mapping for ATM interfaces is supported.

1.3.4 Pseudo Wire Emulation and high accuracy clock supply functions
The CES (Circuit Emulation Service) function enables integration of existing TDM/ATM traffic onto a
single, lower OPEX packet network. The TDM/ATM transmission clock complies with ITU-T G.813 and
Telcordia GR-1244-CORE Stratum 3 specifications, and can be selected from line extracted clock or
adaptive clock via packet network. The following emulation modes are supported:
- TDM emulation: SAToP, CESoPSN
- ATM emulation: ATMoP (Cell mode)
1.3.5 OAM function
Ethernet (ITU-T Y.1731/IEEE802.1ag), ATM (ITU-T I.610), as well as MPLS (IETF RFC4379) OAM
functions support fault detection, fault localization/isolation, alarm transmission and performance
measurement. These features deliver powerful manageability and sustained performance on packet
networks.

1.3.6 Ethernet/VLAN function

Various Ethernet/VLAN functions for Layer 2-based carrier network configuration are provided in order to
enable high levels of network flexibility, robustness and “per service” control.
- VLAN function
Port-based VLAN, Tag-based LAN (IEEE802.1Q), Extended Tag VLAN (802.1ad),
port isolation (filtering traffic between particular ports within a VLAN)
- Redundancy function
Link Aggregation (IEEE802.3ad), Spanning Tree Protocol (IEEE802.1D / w)
Ethernet Linear Protection (ITU-T G.8031), Ethernet Ring Protection (ITU-T G.8032)
- Filtering function
Transparency of MAC control frame, traffic filtering based on various L2/L3 header information

1.3.7 MPLS function

To realize seamless connectivity and manageability between the mobile backhaul and core networks,
MPLS feature is supported so that various pseudowire traffic can be accommodated onto MPLS
networks.
- Supported services
TDM Pseudowire (IETF RFC4553 / 5086), ATM Pseudowire (IETF RFC4717)
Ethernet Pseudowire (IETF RFC4448)
- Signaling and Routing functions
Static (Explicit Path), LDP (IETF 3036 / 4447), RSVP-TE (IETF RFC3209)
Fast Reroute (IETF RFC4090), OSPF-TE (IETF RFC3630)

1.3.8 Network management function

The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMPv1/v2c) function allows the PASOLINK NEO TE
equipment to maintain their own operational state in a Management Information Base (MIB) as an
SNMP agent. Thus an SNMP Manager can provision the equipments and monitor the status of the
equipments. Event monitoring and log file collection on the external syslog server are also possible.
1.3.9 Maintenance interfaces
The following interfaces on the SW module are available as maintenance interfaces:
 CONSOLE ETH (10/100BASE-TX)
This interface connects to the NMS for SNMP-based remote monitoring and also enables
Telnet-based CLI and FTP connections. Telnet connection via an in-band connection with a
VLAN configuration is also available.
 CONSOLE RS-232C (RS-232C)
It enables CLI control through a terminal’s serial interface.
