(1) What is the key content of the article/book chapter?


a) Jenny Thomas (1983) Cross-Cultural Pragmatic Failure
The key content of this article is about the nature of pragmatic failure and the ways in
which students can be helped to obtain pragmatic competence . The authors argue that
pragmatic failure is an area of cross-cultural communication disorder that receives
little attention from language teachers. In this article the author uses the term 'cross-
cultural' as a short way to describe communication between two people who exist in a
particular domain, not having the same linguistic or cultural background.
b) Kramsch (2016) The Multiple Faces of Symbolic Power
In this chapter the author will discuss how the symbolic power that exists in cultural
communication. There are six multiple faces of symbolic power. The six studies
presented here relate to work in talking about symbolic forces that are as invisible and
diffuse as they are relational, coercive and self-perpetuating. It all seems natural,
neutral and useful.

In this chapter the key content is the development of intercultural competence (IC)

Kramsch, 2008). This chapter also explains the increased linguistic and cultural
diversity that characterizes many modern interactions.

The strength of this article is to explain pragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic which is
really needed for the purpose of language teaching to distinguish two types of
pragmatic failures. This article is also suitable for language teachers or language
students learning about inter-language and intercultural studies.
b) Kramsch (2016) The Multiple Faces of Symbolic Power
The strength of this chapter in the context, there is related to psychological we can
know symbolic power is a symbol that has a meaning in the specific context in
societies. Then, the weakness of this chapter is we cannot justify a symbolic power in
a part that is not our capacity.

The strength of this chapter the author has tried to collaborate culture and literary into
a closer relationship to understand IC. Then, the weakness of this chapter
unfortunately too generalize various societies into a group of society

The benefit of reading this chapter as a literature student is that I gained a new
understanding of pragmatics.

The benefit this chapter as a Literary student, I can know the symbolic power that
exists in cultural communication.

The benefit after reading this chapter we have an awareness that can be used to
consider how we use and relate literary and cultural knowledge. And readers can also
know how to develop differences in cross-cultural and cultural logic within the
diversity.
