LOCALS GET THE WIND

UP OVER SLUDGE SMELL.
By Christy Parker
Residents and businesses in the vicinity of Youghal civic amenity
site (usually known as ’the dump’) at Foxhole have been enduring
discomfort from obnoxious smells from the facility in recent
months. Last week saw another flurry of phone calls and com-
plaints to Cork County Council as the prevailing winds wafted the
woeful odour across the adjacent Industrial Estate and beyond.
Due to its landfill facility, the EPA licensed the site last
September, to accept up to 9,700 tons of waste-water sludge (dry-
ish sewerage). This has arrived from waste water treatment plants
Agnes Cronin Sarsfield Terrace who celebrated her 90th birthday recently throughout County Cork, though according to site manager John
Paul O’Neill, it has "averaged about 300 tons per month" which is
far short of the permitted quota.
The sludge is unloaded and tipped into a fully lined area and thus
the terrible smell is released. Mr. O’Neill says prevalent south-
westerly winds have ’normally carried it towards the bay but
recently easterly winds have carried it towards the town". He con-
firms there have been several complaints in recent weeks, partic-
ularly since April.
The manager says that since January they have "reduced our
intake considerably and are trying to divert our remaining cus-
tomers to source treatment elsewhere. There are other technolo-
gies besides landfill for treating sludge nowadays. I expect the
problem to be fully resolved shortly".
The EPA says it visited the site last April on foot of complaints and
having conducted an odour assessment, "is liaising with Cork Co.

Youghal Town and Cork Co. Councillor Barbara Murray says Mr.
Lucey has assured her the problem is being addressed. She adds,
"This isn’t suitable for a tourist town and I certainly don’t like to
think that the smell is the first impression a visitor to Youghal
gets".
Meanwhile it appears that Cork County Council is in the process
of advising clients to send their sludge elsewhere while biding
time to allow them find such alternatives. Unfortunately Senior
County Civil Engineer Ted Lucey declined to come to the phone
last week to clarify what exactly the Co. Council are doing, in
practical terms, to assist this process. A spokeswoman on his
behalf said ’it’s a matter for individual waste water management
centres’.
The Youghal landfill is expected to reach capacity and close with-
in two years but even then trips to the seaside by sludge are
unlikely to cease. One "alternative" destination surely being con-
sidered by the Co. Council’s clients is the adjacent AVR treatment
centre. Granted licence under contentious circumstances, it is

been argued that odours will be contained. As Bob Dylan might
observe, the veracity or otherwise of that, will shortly "be blowing
in the wind." Lets hope it blows the right way.

FAVOURITE PLACES.

Youghal Visual Arts Festival Committee deployed art to extract
wonderful insight from the landscape of modern childhood when
it asked the region’s youngest generations to express their feelings
on ’My Favourite Place’ recently. The intriguing responses from
pupils at four primary schools reflect modern influences as the
Eiffel Tower, Hollywood, Wembley Stadium, Lismore Towers and
a cruise liner vying with bedrooms, mum’s car, Youghal’s main
street, cows, bonfire night and cutting silage for the prime spot in
affections.
The project was an art competition run by the festival committee.

and Sean Murphy Chorain, South Abbey NS, Bun Scoil Mhuire and Knockanore NS
were given three weeks to answer one the most traditional ques-
tions of any school bus journey.
Local, Cork-based artist Marcella Riordan judged the entries
according to class year (as against age), having poured over a mix-
ture of media on the floor of a room provided by the Walther
Raleigh hotel. "The children were allowed use whatever material
they wanted", says Youghal Visual Arts secretary Karen Gallogley.
"The really went for it and we got back a huge variety, from pen-
cils and crayons to paints and models made from paper and glue!
One entry involved rolls of silver paper shaped like the Eiffel
Tower".
The young minds displayed enough variation to give a college of

Hollywood, Capel Island, cows, a forest, railway station and
Ballinatray House. There were several reassuring images of one’s
own front door, while picture poignancy emerged in depictions of
towns and streets in Poland and Estonia from immigrant children.
Nobody submitted an art gallery! Some parents’ reactions were
revealing too. "I didn’t know she had done any painting", said
some. "I haven’t seen it yet", said another more.
Initial plans to award each category 1st, 2nd and 3rd place recog-

morning as their races started at 9am. Tomas Coleman had an
excellent race coming 1st in the sprint and qualified for the semi-
finals. Unfortunately he was not as successful as in his first race.
The junior boys relay team (Danny Walsh, Oisin Keniry, Ross
Donavan and Rory Walsh) also did very well taking 3rd place. The
boys senior relay team (Peter Roche, Ronan O Sullivan, Mark
Coady and Tomas Coleman) came 6th in their relay.
The girls also did wonderfully with Cassie O’ Brien taking 1st
place in her sprint, coming 3rd in the semi-finals and coming an
excellent 5th place in the county finals! Jane Walsh also did well
by coming 1st in her sprint and taking 4th place in the semi-finals.
Emma Hennessy finished well in her race to come 2nd. The Girls
Junior Relay Team (Cassie O Brien, Marie Louise -Keane, Niamh
Crowley and Jane Walsh) came first winning a cup for their
school. The Girls Senior Relay Team (Emma Hennessy, Ciara
Brodrick-Farrell, Jessica Lawton and Sarah Mulcahy) were
unlucky in their relay, missing out on medals.
