11. Solve the following problem by simplex method

12. Solve by Dual simplex method the following LPP

13. A student has to take examination in three courses X,Y,Z. He has three days available for study. He
feels it would be best to devote a whole day to study the same course, so that he may study a course
for one day, two days or three days or not at all. His estimates of grades he may get by studying are as
follows

14. A small maintenance project consists of the following jobs whose precedence relationships is given
below

(i) Draw an arrow diagram representing the project
(ii) Find the total float for each activity
(iii) Find the critical path and the total project duration
15. Arrivals of a telephone booth are considered to be poisson with an average time of 10 min. between
one arrival and the next. The length of a phone call is assumed to be distributed exponentially with
mean 3 min.
(i) What is the probability that a person arriving at the booth will have to wait?
(ii) The telephone department will install a second booth, when convinced that an arrival has
to wait on the average for at least 3 min. for phone. By how much the flow of arrivals
should increase in order to justify a second booth?
(iii) What is the average length of the queue that forms time to time?
(iv) What is the probability that it will take him more than 10 minutes altogether to wait for
the phone and complete his call?
16. A super market has two girls ringing up sales at the counters. If the service time for each customer is
exponential with mean 4 minutes and if people arrive in a Poisson fashion at the counter at the rate of
10 per hour, then calculate
a) The probability of having to wait for service.
b) the expected percentage of idle time for each girl.
c) If a customer has to wait find the expected length of his waiting time.

11. A 3 phase 1500kVA, star connected, 50 Hz, 2300V alternator has a per phase resistance of 0.12Ω. A
field current of 70 A produces a short circuit current equal to the full load current of 376 A in each
line. The same field current produces an emf of 700V on open circuit. Determine the synchronous
reactance of the machine and its full load regulation at 0.8 power factor lagging.

b) Describe the construction and working of a capacitor-start single-phase induction motor.

a) Explain briefly the construction and working of a 3 point starter by drawing a neat diagram.

Answer any FIVE questions. Each question carries 20 marks.
1. Answer the following
a) Refrigerating machine working between the temperature limits of 13C and 37 C and has
90% relative COP. It consumes 4.8 kW power. Determine TR capacity. For same TR
capacity, how much power will be consumed by carnot refrigerator? Also for the same power
consumption, determine TR capacity of carnot refrigerator operating between same
temperature limits. (10)
b) Explain the working of compressor used in air conditioning system of car with sketch? (10)
2. Answer the following
a) Explain the concept of sensible heat factor and bypass factor with suitable sketches? (5)
b) List different types of dehumidifiers. Describe most commonly used type with sketch? (5)
c) Explain the thermal exchange mechanism of human body with environment? (5)
d) Explain the working principle of thermostatic expansion valve with the help of neat diagram.

3. A vapour compression system using R 12 works between -15°C and 35°C as evaporator and
condenser temperature respectively. Using P-H chart determine i) COP ii) Mass flow of refrigerant
per TR iii) Piston displacement per TR using volumetric efficiency =80% iv) Heat rejected in the e
condenser per TR.
4. An air cooling system for a jet plane cock pit operates on the simple cycle. The cockpit is to be
maintained at 25°C. The ambient air pressure and temperature are 0.35 bar and -15°C respectively.
The pressure ratio of the jet compressor is 3. The plane speed is 1000 km/hr. The air is passed through
a heat exchanger after compression and cooled to its original conditions entering into the air jet. The
pressure loss in heat exchanger is 0.1 bar. The pressure of air leaving the cooling turbine is 1.013 and
is also the pressure in the cockpit. The cooling load in the cockpit is 70 kW. Determine i) Mass flow
rate of air circulated to the cabin. ii) Net power delivered to the refrigeration system. iii) The COP of
the system.
5. Answer the following
a) Explain ASHRAE numbering system for refrigerants with example. (10)
b) What is effective temperature? Which are the factors governing effective temperature? (10)
6. What is refrigeration and air-conditioning and state the various types of air-conditioning? And also
differentiate between refrigeration and air conditioning?
7. Differentiate between sensing elements and actuating elements, used in a refrigeration control system.
Give examples of both. Comparison of compression and vapour absorption refrigeration system
