I. Introduction (give at least 3 key concepts that were highlighted in the video clip)

Based in the video about different mathematical symmetries in the Philippines, it is where
different kinds of symmetrical patterns are shown. On the first hand, I noticed that the speaker tackled
of the research by mathematicians on the symmetry patterns of chosen Indigenous Cloth in the
Philippines. Primarily these are the Handkerchief, Binakol, Itneg, and Pisyabit. More so, the speaker
quite specifically and carefully identified every pattern found in the textiles which was the product of her
research on the subject. Lastly, the speaker discussed the patterns/wallpaper/frieze pattern, translation,
rotation, and reflection/glide reflection where these kinds of symmetrical pattern are usually used in a
particular motif.

II. Body (provide details of concepts you mentioned in the introduction)

With respect to the introduction, the first thing that was discussed in the video was all about
symmetrical patterns in which they gave different sample patterns to elaborate their claims. Based on
the first thing that I noticed are the three Philippine Indigenous textiles such as binakol, itneg,
handkerchief, and pisyabit. Binakol’s composition was made from kasikus design or whirlwind design
which represents circle specifically concentric circle on a particular grid and there are also reflective
symmetries around the aforementioned textile. In line with its arrangement, positive and negative
shaded strings in reviewed square shapes that radiate from a focal square shape is said to have the
hurricane like impression of movement. The concept repeated the same distance across the rectangles
to establish 180 degree rotational symmetry. While itneg cloth, makes distinctive geometrical shapes,
for example, pentagon and right triangles. This even incorporates the flat shaft reflections yet not the
vertical one. Focuses in 180 degree turn are where the isosceles triangles merge. Lastly, Pisyabit has,
square, the simple geometrical number. The first pattern seen in the video has in the middle 25 square
segments, with four distinct motifs. Such motifs have movement of 90 degrees, with horizontal and
vertical reflection while strip patterns circle the main template and turn into its furniture and it has the
float reflection and simultaneous vertical mirror with rotational symmetries of 180 degrees. On the
other hand, wallpaper pattern is a two-way adaptation, with 17 levels of symmetry. Additionally, it has
17 groups of symmetry. And, Frieze pattern is a one-way translation which has 7 groups of symmetry.
Next, Translation, a motive changes inside a line by a defined gap. Following, Rotation has a middle or
fixed position at irregular intervals where it spins. As a final point, reflection and glide reflection creates
a mirror image and it is known as a translation mixture.
III. Conclusion (your major learnings based on the key concepts you mentioned in I and II)

Having an artistic view, I am fond of different patterns shown in the video because of the
underlying meaning and beauty of it, and I am also curious about who they are made of. Most of them
will be seen in a place that promotes and enriches a specific culture and tradition such as Davao, Baguio,
Bataan, etc. like malong it is where weaving techniques were done. Looking on a deeper context, I found
out that those patterns carries math since we are talking about patterns which also gave me an ideation
that math is around us and it is everything.
