TUTORIAL SHEET- 1

IMPACT OF JET

1. Obtained the expression for the force exerted by a jet of water on a fixed vertical plate in the direction
of the jet.
2. Show that the force exerted by the jet of water on an inclined fixed plate in the direction of the jet is
given by,
Fx=ρaV2 sin2θ
Where a= Area of the jet, V= Velocity of the jet
θ = inclination of the plane with the jet.
3. Prove that the force exerted by a jet of water on a fixed semi-circular plate in the direction of the jet
when the jet strikes at the center of the semi-circular plate is two times the force exerted by the jet on a
fixed vertical plate.
4. Differentiate between: (1) the force exerted by a jet of water on a fixed vertical plate & moving vertical
plate,& (2) the force exerted by a jet on a single curved moving plate & a series of curved moving
plate.
5. Find an expression for the efficiency of a series of moving curved vanes when a jet of water strikes the
vanes at bone of its tips. Prove that maximum efficiency is when u=V & the value of maximum
efficiency is 50%.
6. Show that the force exerted by a jet of water on moving inclined plate in the direction of jet is given by
Fx= ρa(V-u)2sin2θ
Where a= area of jet
θ = inclination of the plate with the jet and,
V= velocity of jet
7. A jet of water of diameter 100mm moving with a velocity of 30m/s strikes a curved fixed symmetrical
plate at the center. Find the force exerted by the jet of the water, if the jet is deflected through an angle
of 120° at the outlet of the curved plate.
(Ans. 10602.7N)
8. A jet of water of diameter 100mm moving with a velocity of 20m/s strikes a curved fixed plate
tangentially at one end at an angle of 30° to the horizontal. The jet leaves the plate at an angle of 20° to
the horizontal. Find the force exerted by the jet on the plate in the horizontal & vertical direction.

(Ans.5672.34N, 496.3N)
9. A jet of water of diameter 150mm strikes a flat plate normally with a velocity of 12m/s. the plate is
moving with a velocity of 6m/s in the direction of the jet and away from the jet. Find (1) the force
exerted by the jet on a plate, (2) work done by the jet on a plate per second, (3) power of the jet, (4)
efficiency.
(Ans. (1) 636.3N,(2) 3817.6Nm/s,(3) 3.82kW, (4) 25%)
10. A jet of water having a velocity of 30m/s strikes a curved vane, which is moving with a velocity of
154m/s. the jet makes an angle of 30° with direction of motion of vane at inlet and leaves an angle of
120° to the direction of motion of vane at outlet. Calculate; (i) Vane angles, if the water enters and
leaves the vane without shock, (ii) work done per second per unit weight of water striking the vanes
per second. (Ans. (i) 53°
47.7’,15°41’(ii) 44.15Nm/N)
