Friday July 10th when the organisation produces Dutch outfit
Trinity at the Mall Arts Centre.
Trinity usually plays a mixture of Celtic ballads aligned with a
definite Peruvian influence. The four-man ensemble includes the
three Smelt brothers, who spent their childhoods in Peru. The
band’s range of pop music marries Celtic and South American
influence to produce a passionate, high-tempo performance. The
band’s second album, released last January took assimilation a
step further by adding African beats and grooves. Residents in the
vicinity of the Mall who are not attending could do worse than
keep some windows open and let a bit of the world enter.

YOUGHAL LIGHTHOUSE
A light tower was built in 1190 by Maurice Fitzgerald and
placed under the care of the nuns of St Anne’s Convent whom
he endowed for this purpose. The tower, built at the western
entrance to the harbour in almost exactly the same position as
our present lighthouse, was about twenty four feet high and ten
feet in diameter. It had a narrow pointed doorway on the sea side
looking north east, and spiral stone steps on the inside of the
building led up to two large circular headed windows. One
faced east over the harbour mouth and the other faced over
Capel Island. Boullaye le Gouz published his tour of Ireland in
1644 and mentions that the nuns in the tower, called the
Nunnery, used to light torches upon the tower to guide vessels
into the harbour at night. The practice was discontinued after
1542 when St Anne’s Chapel was dissolved. The tower was in a
bad state of decay when it was taken down to make room for the
present lighthouse in the summer of 1848.
The masonry part of the tower was complete by July 1849 and
during the following winter the lantern was added; the copper
dome could not be finished as the coppersmiths were employed
at Ballycotton and it was not until June 1851 that George Halpin
reported that the buildings were complete. Meanwhile, the
Youghal Town Commissioners had enquired when the light-
house was to be put into operation, suggesting that it should be
simultaneously lit with Ballycotton and Mine Head. The
Inspector was not in agreement with this and said Youghal
should be lit after the other two, giving August as a date. As it
happened, things, for some reason or other, did not work out as
planned. Ballycotton and Mine Head were exhibited on 1 June
1851 but Youghal stayed unlit until 1 February 1852. The light,
a fixed dioptric 3rd order optic showing white, 78 feet above
high water, was visible for 10 miles. The total cost up to 1852
was £4,679-6-5d. The granite tower has three floors, ground,
first and lantern, and is 43 feet high to the top of the dome ven-
tilator. The Keeper’s dwelling is alongside with the front door
opening on to the main Cork-Youghal road.
A new electric light was put into operation on 26 May 1964 with
an increased power in the white light from 2500 to 4000 cande-
las and the red increased from 500 to 800 candelas. On 17 May
1978 the white and red sectors were altered to cover the dangers
and mark the deepest water more effectively.
In 1992 plans were drawn up to improve the range of the light.
This entailed replacing the Argenta lamps with two 100V
1000W (LII type) filament lamps (one in use, one standby in
case of failure of the lamp in use) mounted on a LC lampchang-
er and powered by a 100V DC supply. The lampchanger and
power unit had previously been in use at Tuskar. The new optic
system was put into operation on 27 May 1993. The range of the
improved light was 17 nautical miles in the white sectors and 13
nautical miles in the red sectors. Local shipping interests wrote
to the Commissioners expressing their appreciation.
Since 1996 the Attendant no longer lives at the lighthouse.
The light is monitored remotely from the monitoring centre at
Irish Lights Headquarters in Dœn Laoghaire.
AURA KEEPING YOUGHAL CHILDREN ACTIVE THIS SUMMER
Parents interested in keeping their children occupied this summer need look no further
than Aura Youghal Leisure Centre who are providing a selection of swimming cours-
es to keep children fit and active during the summer months.
"Children are always looking for things to do during the long summer holidays and
learning how to improve and build upon their swimming skills is an ideal way for chil-
dren to spend their holidays. Learning to swim has become hugely popular with chil-
dren, not only because it is an important life skill but because of the enjoyment factor
as well," explained Aura Youghal Leisure Centre Operations Manager, Tracy
Kenneally.
Aura are offering a course of ’Intensive Swimming Lessons’ for children who are
focused on improving their swimming skills this summer These classes are ideal for
children who have already learned how to swim and want to build on and improve their
swimming strengths. The course is specifically designed to allow children to develop
their swim skills and make progress over a short space of time. The week long lessons
are open to swimmers of all levels and get underway on Monday, July 6th with other
week long lessons due to commence on Monday, July 13th, Monday, July 20th,
Monday, July 27th, Tuesday, August 5th, Monday, August 10th and Monday, August
17th. Classes take place from 9 a.m. to 9.45 a.m. and from 10 a.m. to 10.45 a.m. each
day and cost 50 per week with a 10% discount for Aura members. For children inter-
ested in learning some life guarding skills this summer the Aura ’Rookie Lifeguard’
course gives youngsters the opportunity to learn about water safety and equips them
with skills which could help them to save a life. It caters for children from 8 to 12 years
and includes survival, rescue and sport skills as well as life support and water safety
skills. "A lot of work goes into ensuring that the course is both educational and fun.
The Bronze Level will teach students the basic principles of water safety and essential
life saving swim strokes while also helping them to identify pool and water aids,"
Tracy explained. The ’Rookie Lifeguard’ Bronze level takes place from Monday, July
27th to Friday July 31st from 6.30 p.m. to 7.30 pm. The classes cost 80 for the week
with a 10% discount for Aura members. Early booking is advised to avoid disappoint-
ment. Aura Youghal is also reminding people that it is extending it’s public swimming
hours to facilitate the increased number of swimmers that are visiting the centre this
summer. The centre will be increasing its public swim times in both the mornings and
afternoons to cater for the rising number of swimmers taking to the pool during the
summer holidays.
Further information about the ’Intensive Swimming Lessons’, ’Rookie Lifeguard’ and
the new timetables which outline details of the extended public swimming hours is
available by contacting reception at 024 91614.

Youghal’s position was critical to the maintenance of that trade,
and access to the most valuable farmland in Ireland. It derives its
name from the Gaelic word ’Eochaill’, meaning ’yew wood’, pro-
nounced ’Yawl’. You can explore the walls and one of the towers
from which it is possible to make out the original layout of the
town. Full details on the historic buildings in Youghal, such as the
Watergate, Myrtle Grove, Tyntes Castle and St. Mary’s Collegiate
Church can be found in our heritage section. The most notable
(and photographed) building in the town centre is the fine Clock
Tower in the main street, built in 1776 as a gaol (jail) to imprison
the renegade Catholics. It was routinely used as torture chamber
and was universally regarded as a symbol of terror and tyranny!Sir
Walter Raleigh is probably the most famous citizen of Youghal,
responsible for bringing two things to Youghal - potatoes and
tobacco, as Youghal was the leading trading point in Ireland at the
time. Another famous resident of Youghal was the first Earl of
Cork, Sir Richard Boyle, who purchased many of the estates of
Raleigh.
Boyle’s remains are buried in St. Mary’s Collegiate Church, an

SUCCESS FOR YOUGHAL'S FIRST DEEP SEA ANGLING
COMPETITON IN OVER 20 YEARS Photo: Michael Hussey

Youghal’s first Deep Sea Angling Competiton in over 20 years

attracted in excess of 100 anglers for a weekend of serious fishing
in Youghal Bay.
Entrants in the Charter Boat competition battled it out for a share of
2,500 in prizes. A Private Boat competiton also ran alongside the
main event with all proceeds going to the Youghal RNLI. The over-
all winner of the main competition scoring 511 points for the week-
end was Gordan Darker, from the Stella Marie Angling Club in
Dublin.
The competition was fished using up to three hooks, with the
anglers priding themselves on their selection of baits and lures Janette Hickey and Adrian Landers, Liz Neville from Youghal RNLI and
according to tide, water colour, and ground. Irish Coast Guard Katriona Griffin from Youghal Chamber
Seven Charter Boats from Youghal, Dungarvan, Ballycotton and
Crosshaven took to the water on Saturday 27th June at 10.00 am for
a gruelling seven hours of fishing. With conditions on Sunday
proving to be more challenging, it did not deter the anglers on
board who all braved the elements.
Speaking about the event, organiser Gavin Tivy of Youghal Dive
Charters commented: "We are delighted that the event went so well.
This was the first such competiton in many years here in Youghal,
and all part of the revival of angling in Youghal. We had anglers
from all around the country fishing here this weekend, all promis-
ing to return in the near future. Gavin also referred to their spon-
Noreen, Will and Emma Varney Gavin Tivy from Youghal Dive Charters
sors generoristy in making the event possible. "We were over-
whelmed with the response from local business people, they gave us
great support and we want to thank them all most sincerely for mak-
ing this event possible and allowing us to attract the best anglers to
Youghal".

Gold and Silver for Youghal Girls in the All Ireland Junior
Pole Vault
On Sunday 28th June the All Ireland Junior and U23
Championships took place in Tullamore Co Offal, Youghal had
two Athletes competing in the Junior Women’s Pole Vault.
Nikita Savage and Sarah Ryan took Gold and Silver in the event.
Sarah opened the competition with a first time clearance at 2.20
metres and followed this with another first time clearance at 2.40.
Sarah knocked 2.60 metres first time around, but made no mistake
on her second attempt. Sarah cleared 2.80 very impressively on Noel Cronin, founding member of CRY broadcasting his Saturday morning show

round, Sarah was most unlucky on her first attempt when she on air with the surprise birthday cake
caught the bar on the way up she was over the 3.00 metre bar on
her second attempt but caught it on the way down and she failed
again on her third attempt. This was undoubtedly one of the best
displays of vaulting that Sarah ever done and shows how much
more there is to come, considering her absence from competition
last year.
Nikita Savage entered the competition at 2.80 metres with a first
time clearance and she also cleared 3.00 metres on her first
attempt. Nikita knocked 3.20 first time around but changed poles
and sailed over it on her second attempt. Nikita tried for 3.40
metres but failed to clear it on her third attempt but had done
enough to claim the Gold with her clearance of 3.20 and adds this
to the All Ireland Junior Indoor title she won back in March. This
is the second year in a row she has claimed the All Ireland Junior One of the founding members of CRY,
