Duration : 1 Hour 30 minutes Max. Marks : 50

Answer all questions (10 x 5 = 50)

1. Derive an expression for length contraction.

2. Explain the concept of simultaneity.

3. A spacecraft is moving relative to the earth. An observer on the earth finds that, between 1 pm
and 2 pm according to her clock, 3601 s elapse on the spacecraft’s clock What is the spacecraft
speed relative to the earth?

4. Draw the spectrum of black body radiation. Explain the ultra-violet catastrophe through proper
diagram.

5. Show that the Compton shift is independent of wavelength of incident photon.

6. Explain wave-particle duality and write down de Broglie’s wavelength. Calculate the De-Broglie
wavelength of an electron accelerated by a potential of 30 keV

7. State Heisenberg Uncertainty principle. Plot a model graph between the uncertainty in position
(x) and uncertainty in momentum (px) for any moving particle.

8. Obtain Schrodinger time-dependent wave equation.

9. Consider that two electrons are confined to a one dimensional box of length 10-10 m. Calculate
the lowest energy of the system

10. Explain the principle and working of Scanning Tunneling Microscope with a neat diagram.
