Position Paper: Removal of Filipino Subject in Tertiary Education

Filipino subjects have been taught in all colleges and universities in the Philippines as a
part of General Education Curriculum (GEC) for tertiary level. It has been a way of propagating
knowledge about Filipino language and its components to college students. Removal of Filipino
subject in tertiary should not be implemented. It has a big effect in the Philippines if they remove
the Filipino subject in tertiary level as a part of GEC.

The Filipino subjects in tertiary level should not be remove especially to the students
who will get this field because Filipino subject helps the students to deepens their knowledge in
our national language and also it helps us to empowered our identity as a Filipino. It becomes the
foundation of learning of all Filipino students. Filipino subject is not about in our language it
also introduce us the culture of the Philippines. According to the Article XIV section 6 of the
Constitution, the government shall take steps to initiate and sustain the use of Filipino as a
medium of official communication and as a language of instruction in the educational
system.Gary Devilles, a professors at Ateneo De Manila states that “Ang Filipino sa antas na
Because of this, it
said that it was necessary that the subjects be included and taught as an integral part of any
professional education. Also if the Filipino subjects in tertiary is lost, we will be a nation without
a common language.
Filipino subject helps us to be a better Filipino citizens and its our identity as Filipino so
that we should not remove the Filipino subject even in the tertiary level. It has a big effect if they
remove Filipino subject. The Filipino teachers believe that it is better if Filipino is still to be
taught in college for most of the students only learn Filipino in the tertiary level. Being
knowledgeable in Filipino is important because it does not only teach Filipino as a subject, thus
it gives meaning and shows essence of having nationalism.
