Sunday 22 March 2020 – Mothering Sunday

Welcome (Book of Common Prayer – P101)

Beloved in Christ, we come together: to offer to Almighty God our
worship and praise and thanksgiving, to confess our sins and to receive
God’s forgiveness, to hear his holy word proclaimed, to bring before
him our needs and the needs of the world, and to pray that in the power
of his Spirit we may serve him and know the greatness of his love.

Hymn 365: Praise To The Lord (Joachim Neander)

1. Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of Creation;
O my soul, praise Him, for he is thy health and salvation;
All ye who hear, now to his temple draw near, joining in glad adoration.
2. Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth,
shieldeth thee gently from harm, or when fainting sustaineth:
hast thou not seen how thy heart’s wishes have been
granted in what he ordaineth?
3. Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work, and defend thee!
Surely His goodness and mercy shall daily attend thee.
Ponder anew what the Almighty can do,
who with his love doth befriend thee.
4. Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore Him!
All that hath life and breath come now with praises before Him!
Let the Amen sound from his people again:
gladly for aye we adore him.

Confession (Book of Common Prayer – P102)

Let us confess our sins to God our Father:
Heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour
in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness,
through our own deliberate fault; by what we have done and by what we
have failed to do. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the
sake of your Son Jesus Christ who died for us, forgive us all that is past;
and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your
name. Amen.
Absolution (Book of Common Prayer – P102)
Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy on you,
pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you
in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.

Proclaiming and Receiving the Word

(Book of Common Prayer – P103)
O Lord open our lips:
and our mouth will proclaim your praise.
O God make speed to save us:
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.
Praise the Lord:
The Lord’s name be praised.

Psalm 23
1The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down
in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth
my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's
sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I
will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort
me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine
enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I
will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen
Reading: 1 Samuel 1:1-17
1There was a certain man from the hill country of Ephraim, whose
name was Elkanah. 2 He had two wives; one was called Hannah and the
other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.
3 Year after year this man went up from his town to worship and
sacrifice to the LORD Almighty at Shiloh, where Hophni and Phinehas,
the two sons of Eli, were priests of the LORD. 4 Whenever the day came
for Elkanah to sacrifice, he would give portions of the meat to his wife
Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters. 5 But to Hannah he gave a
double portion because he loved her, and the LORD had closed her
womb. 6 Because the LORD had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept
provoking her in order to irritate her. 7 This went on year after year.
Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, her rival provoked
her till she wept and would not eat. 8 Her husband Elkanah would say to
her, ‘Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you
downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?’
9 Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah
stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of
the LORD’s house. 10 In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the LORD,
weeping bitterly. 11 And she made a vow, saying, ‘LORD Almighty, if you
will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not
forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD
for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.’
12 As she kept on praying to the LORD, Eli observed her mouth.
13 Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her
voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk 14 and said to her, ‘How
long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.’
15 ‘Not so, my lord,’ Hannah replied, ‘I am a woman who is deeply
troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my
soul to the LORD. 16 Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have
been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.’
17 Eli
answered, ‘Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what
you have asked of him.’
This is the Word of the Lord: Thanks be to God
Hymn 20 (Henry Williams Baker)
1. The King of Love my Shepherd is,
whose goodness faileth never,
I nothing lack if I am His
and He is mine forever.
2. Where streams of living water flow
my ransomed soul He leadeth,
and where the verdant pastures grow,
with food celestial feedeth.
3. Perverse and foolish oft I strayed,
but yet in love He sought me,
and on His shoulder gently laid,
and home, rejoicing, brought me.
4. In death’s dark vale I fear no ill
with Thee, dear Lord, beside me;
thy rod and staff my comfort still,
thy cross before to guide me.
5. Thou spread’st a table in my sight;
thy unction grace bestoweth;
and O what transport of delight
from Thy pure chalice floweth!
6. And so through all the length of days
thy goodness faileth never;
Good Shepherd, may I sing Thy praise
within Thy house forever.
Sermon: Bishop Ferran Glenfield
Hymn 224 (Stuart Townsend)
1. How deep the Father's love for us how vast beyond all measure.
That He should give His only Son to make a wretch His treasure.
How great the pain of searing loss the Father turns His face away.
As wounds which mar the chosen One bring many sons to glory.
2. Behold the Man upon a cross my sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers
It was my sin that held Him there until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life I know that it is finished.
3. I will not boast in anything no gifts, no powr's, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ His death and resurrection
Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart His wounds have paid my ransom

The Apostles' Creed (Book of Common Prayer – P112)

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by
the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the
third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right
hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the
dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life
everlasting. Amen.

The Prayers of the People (Book of Common Prayer – P112)

The Lord be with you: and also with you.
Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
Show us your mercy, O Lord:
and grant us your salvation.
O Lord, guide and defend our rulers:
and grant our government wisdom.
Let your ministers be clothed with righteousness:
and let your servants shout for joy.
O Lord save your people:
and bless those whom you have chosen.
Give peace in our time, O Lord:
and let your glory be over all the earth.
O God make clean our hearts within us:
and renew us by your Holy Spirit.
Collect of the Day: Lent 4
Lord God whose blessed Son our Saviour gave his back to the smiters
and did not hide his face from shame: Give us grace to endure the
sufferings of this present time with sure confidence in the glory that
shall be revealed; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Morning Prayer Collect

Heavenly Father, in whom we live and move and have our being: We
humbly pray that your Holy Spirit may so guide and govern us that in
all the cares and occupations of our daily life, we may never forget your
presence but may remember that we are always walking in your sight,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession
At the end of each prayer:
Lord in your mercy:
hear our prayer.

The Lord’s Prayer (Book of Common Prayer – P113)

Our Father, who art in heaven: hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who
trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from
evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory for ever and ever.
Amen.

The Grace (Book of Common Prayer – P116)

The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the
fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Closing Hymn CH611: Christ Be Beside Me (James Quinn)

1. Christ be beside me, Christ be before me,
Christ be behind me, King of my heart.
Christ be within me, Christ be below me,
Christ be above me, never to part.
2. Christ on my right hand, Christ on my left hand,
Christ all around me, shield in the strife.
Christ in my sleeping, Christ in my sitting,
Christ in my rising, light of my heart.
3. Christ be in all hearts thinking about me,
Christ be on all tongues telling of me.
Christ be the vision in eyes that see me,
in ears that hear me Christ ever be.

Closing Diocesan 20:20 Prayer

Heavenly Father, we want to catch your vision for these dioceses and for
our parish. But to catch your vision we first need to listen to you. Too
often we leave you out. Forgive us. Help us to catch a sense of where your
Spirit is leading. Give us courage to love and serve you. Give us boldness
to proclaim Christ faithfully and to build your kingdom. Lord, come to
us; our door is open. Amen.

Blessing and Dismissal

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord: in the name of Christ. Amen.
