CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the Study

Philippines, according to We Are Social and Hootsuite’s latest Global

Digital report (2019), ranked first as the country who spends most of their time in

social media usage. Social media has become a platform of different contents

like news updates, life events sharing, communication, self-expression, business,

etc. On the other hand, people tend to misuse the purpose of it by spreading fake

news, cyberbullying & scamming. Using too much social media leaves a lot of

digital footprints because they can easily make a profile out of you based on the

things you like, sites you visit and things you buy online. You can easily publish

something not credible and in a span of a few minutes, it can easily spread-out.

On the disadvantages mentioned, every people on social media can be affected

with these. According to Viner (2019), “our results suggest that social media itself

doesn’t cause harm, but that frequent use may disrupt activities that have a

positive impact on mental health such as sleeping and exercising while

increasing exposure of young people to harmful content, particularly the negative

experience of cyber-bullying (Asmelash, 2019).

According to Journal of Health Communication (2017), mental illness is

portrayed in social media as a problem of an individual rather than societal issue,

society often stigmatized the people who are suffering with mental health
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA
Mendiola, Manila 2
SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

problems. People who do not have mental illness expect them to depict a specific

conditions. For example, people assume a person with depression is always

having suicidal thoughts. When a person posted something about depression on

social media, they think that they know what a person is going through. Mentally-

challenged people tend to be offended when society labels them without knowing

what they are going through (Saleh, 2019).

Having this said, usage of social media comes hand in hand with different

social factors that each individual encounter within their lifestyle which means it

can affect one’s own perspective on a specific social phenomenon or topic, in a

specific manner. Abrams (2018) quoted, "if you spend most of your time scrolling

through your newsfeed checking out other people's lives and compare them to

your own, you become more at risk of developing (or having worsening)

symptoms of depression or anxiety”. When it comes to society's depiction of

mental illness, people who spend their time in social networking sites often tends

to have influenced opinions based on what they are seeing on the internet which

leads to people having negative impression about mental illness. Also, netizens

lessen the importance of it when other people have already influenced the

general meaning of mental issues. Hence, this may also alter the general

meaning and idea of the mental illness to the said individual. Social media gives

an impression to mental health issues through sharing posts relating to their

personal experiences. According to Forest et. al (2012), people who use social
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA
Mendiola, Manila 3
SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

media more often tend to self-evaluate themselves and lower their self-esteem

that came from comparing themselves to other people.

Social media tends to have a lot of negative impact on people, but people

keep on forgetting the advantages of it. It helps an individual to have a sense of

connection and community through email and video chatting, it helps people to

keep in touch with their families and friends that are living in distant. It also helps

people to express and promote their achievements and talents. Sharing

accomplishments can lead people in leaving comments to show encouragement

and support, a little validation can help build up self-esteem and boost

confidence. Being on social media is actually helpful for people who fear of

missing out on trends and issues. But with these, people who use social media

needs to keep a balanced lifestyle between online life and real lived experience

to help our emotional wellbeing (Eason, 2018). Social media can help people

with mental illness by inspiring healthy life changes. Encouraging other people by

posting goals on a daily basis can inspire them on having goals on their own. It

can also create a support system with families and friends of their own. With this,

other people may like to achieve similar goals. Having a shared goal can

promote a person to stay focused and to increase the chance of success. As of

today, a lot of therapists and psychiatrists are extending their reach by using

social media. These professionals are increasingly using social media to connect

with people who are seeking for help, and communicate to other professionals in

the online community. Social media also provides motivational messages that
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA
Mendiola, Manila 4
SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

can boost their confidence (Naruse, 2017). With these a lot of people might feel

better and not feel alone.

The aim of the researchers for this study is to raise social awareness

against adapting the stigma that circles around mental illness caused by the

significant amount of time spent on certain social media platforms.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED WORKS

Thematic Review

Facebook

Mark Zuckerberg is the founder of Facebook in 2004. He was a Harvard

student who made a site who violated the policy of the university, two days later

he come up with a URL http://www.thefacebook.com. Facebook is an online

social networking site, and it became the largest social networking site in the

world with 2.45 billion monthly active users as of 2019. Facebook became a

convenient tool to communicate to other people who are on different parts of the

world, and it was purposely made to become transparent to show the true identity

of the user, not only this, but to also share ideas, information and build a friendly

relationship and society (Hall, 2019).

The researchers used this social media platform for their study because

there are estimated forty-four million (44,000,000) users of Facebook in the

Philippines (Sanchez, 2019) Many of these people share their ideas through this

website. Facebook became an outlet of venting out their emotions by sharing

posts and updating their status on the said social media platform.

Mendiola, Manila 9
SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

Twitter

The idea came from Engineer Jack Dorsey, and by the help of Evan

Williams and Biz Stone they developed Twitter in 2007. Evan Williams created a

web authoring tool called Blogger, he then experimented on the podcasting

venture Odeo of Google (a short messaging service (SMS)) then he came up

with Twttr. He built a company called Obvious Corp. to further develop Twttr.

After Jack Dorsey joined the team they debuted the final website in March 2007

which we call Twitter today. It is an online microblogging site, it relates the

aspects of social networking. Twitter was made to communicate and talk about

the day the users’ had with brief messages or “tweets” with just 280 characters.

Twitter users can tweet any subjects that they like. It can follow other accounts,

topics, and news that can be seen through the users’ timeline (Augustyn et. al.,

2019)

When people discovered Twitter, the first purpose of the website is to

narrate the users’ experience. They transferred to Twitter because it is less

complicated and it requires less effort in sharing your thoughts compared to

Facebook.

Instagram

Kevin Systrom developed the idea of Instagram, but his idea came from

his app called Burbn that is based on a Foursquare’s check-in service. Micheal

Krieger evolved Systrom’s idea and they decided to just focus on the camera

Mendiola, Manila 10
SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

feature. Instagram took only eight (8) weeks to create. It didn’t take too much

time for the application to gain users because in just few hours, there are already

one million users (Woods, 2013). Instagram was developed for photographer

enthusiasts and later on, it evolved to sharing photos and art.

Instagram became a gateway for the artists and photographers to share

their works and inspirations.

YouTube

YouTube was developed in 2004, and it was launched 2005.

The idea was founded by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim. Karim

shared the idea of what to post on YouTube, to embarrassing events to news

and devastating events (Dickey, 2013) YouTube was created for all forms of

entertainment, educational purposes that people leads to create video tutorials to

their knowledge to others.

Amongst any other social media platform, YouTube is the-go-to website

not only for people who want to find and entertaining and educational videos but

also for those content creator.

Time

In 2012, the amount of teenagers spends on social media has increased

to 62.5 percent. Just last year, the percentage grew and was estimated as 2.6

per day. According to Sarah Coyne, a professor of family life at Brigham Young
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA
Mendiola, Manila 11
SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

University, more screen time can increase depression and anxiety to teenagers

(Coyne et al., 2019).

Students

Jacob Barkley, professor of health sciences at Kent State University

quoted “Interaction on social media is not beneficial. It’s electronic, the higher the

cellphone use, the more time spent on social media, and the higher the anxiety.

Peer relationships actually get worse the more you use your phone.” Jean

Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State University, revealed that

students who are dissatisfied with their lives spend more time using smartphones

and other electronic devices while students who engage in face-to-face social

interaction have the opposite effect (Barrett, 2018).

Social Media

Based on the recent statistic count from GlobalStats (2019) statcounter for

October 2018 to October 2019 of social media use, Facebook has the highest

percentage of 89.76%, followed by Twitter (6.01%), Youtube (1.64%), and

Instagram (0.74%). Most of the teenagers and young adults are spending time on

these social media platforms as part of their daily life.

The benefits and purposes that the social media users gain from social

media is being aware about the things that happen in their surroundings, their

relatives and the trends and interesting topics that they might want to know. They
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA
Mendiola, Manila 12
SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

might also acquire the negative effects of social media, or spending too much on

it.

Depiction of Mental Illness

Most of the students who spend most of their time on social media, see a

lot of shared posts about mental illness that sometimes they become confused

on what to believe. As time passes by, mental health issues increase by the use

of social media. Jean Twenge quoted on one of the article, “We found that teens

who spent five or more hours a day online were 71 percent more likely than

those who spent less than an hour a day to have at least one suicide risk factor

(depression, thinking about suicide, making a suicide plan or attempting suicide).

Overall, suicide risk factors rose significantly after two or more hours a day of

time online.” (Barrett, 2018). In her statement, she explained that because social

media has become part of most of the students’ daily lives, there could be

chance of them acquiring mental health problems including anxiety and

depression.

The common mental illness that is circulating on social media platforms

are depression and anxiety. These mental illness became a trend on social

media due to many teenagers and young adult vent out on these specific social

media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. According

to the Department of Health (DOH) there are 4.5 million cases of depression

reported in the Philippines in 2004. The World Health Organization (WHO)

LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA
Mendiola, Manila 13
SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

reported over 2,000 suicide cases from year 2000 to 2012 and the ages of the

victims from the said report are between 15 to 29 years old.

A chief resident of the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) Department of

Psychaitry and Behavioral Medicine, Dr. Constantine Chua shared her personal

belief that, mental health is not just the role of doctors or clinical

psychologists….The whole community will really play a role – that includes the

family, the teachers, the students themselves.

Synthesis

In the United States, 50% of its adult population can experience defined

mental disorder, and in over a year, 30% of these population will experience a

disorder, these disorders under Psychological Disorder (PD) includes anxiety,

and depression; it accounts to 25% of the recorded mental disorders in the span

of 12 months. The said disorder has been a point of interest for those bridging

the gap between the use of ICT and mental health. However, most of these

studies are not based from the symptoms of PD and other measures of

depression and anxiety. (Kessler et al.)

Social media can lead to an increase of negative influence to youth that

can lead to exposure and engagement of self-harm behavior, they can also

engage and adapt self-harming practices from shared videos. The more the

youth waste their time on social media, the more that they are at risk in having
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA
Mendiola, Manila 14
SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

higher psychological distress, an unattended support for mental health, and can

increase suicidal ideation (Memon et. al., 2018).

People have a different perspective of why they have different beliefs

about mental illness. Developing countries mostly neglect the idea of having

mental health problem and their specific disorders. One (1) out of every four (4)

people can acquire mental illness through the way they think and function.

Altering the minds of the people who neglect mental illness letting them to

understand the personal knowledge about mental health, and interact with a

person who is diagnosed with mental illness (Choudhry et. al., 2016).

People who doesn’t believe or neglect the idea of mental illness have a

negative opinion about this that leads to them believing that mentally challenged

people are being pretentious about how they feel (Bracke et. al., 2019).

Theoretical Framework

Marshal McLuhan is one of the scholars who introduced the Medium

Theory, together with Joshua Meyrowitz and Neil Postman. It focuses on the

ways in which the media communicates with different medium, besides having a

different messages to convey. Medium Theory is having the same content but it

is shown in different media, it also has different effects to the viewers or

audiences that can misinterpret depending on the media it shown. The theory

focuses on how people perceive the message of different mediums having the
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA
Mendiola, Manila 15
SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

same content (Meyrowitz, 2019). They tend to give meaning according to the

medium because different mediums have different interpretation.

McLuhan believed the idea of the statement “The medium is the massage”

which means that the media disrupts the message when it is conveyed, due to

developing of views and senses of each person due to evolvement of technology,

society may misinterpret the message depending to the use of the medium. He

stated that the media played a major role in the development of human society

and it is depended on how the information allocate the people.

The researchers used this theory for their study because it shows the

different perspective of the people on each medium. It relates to the study

because it depicts that the portrayal of mental illness on social media is being

shown upon different types of medium.

Conceptual Paradigm

Independent Variable

Independent Variable

Determining the relationship of two independent variables which is

the social media. It represented by various forms like photo display, artwork

presentation, narratives, music portrayal and videos. The other Independent

variable is the students’ profile which represented by age, sex and level / strand.

The framework also showed the other variable which is time, how it affects the

development of our outcome which is the mental illness. It will show if there

significant importance between the time exposure and the severity of our

outcome.

Definition of Terms

Social Media – it is used as the independent variable for it aims to

manipulate the mediums (e.g. artwork presentation, music, narratives, etc.).

Mental illness - a disease condition which primarily affects your state of

being how you feel and think

Portrayal – it is used as the dependent variable in this study for it

measures how individuals display their emotions into different forms (e.g. artwork

presentation, music, narratives, etc.).

Perceive - the way how people see

Suicidal Ideation - is formed when there is an unattended support for

mental health.

Suicidal Thoughts - is formed when someone is having depressive

symptoms.

Depression - according to the study, people can acquire this disorder in

spending too much time on social media.

Anxiety - studies show, anxiety is somehow linked to depression.

Netizens - these people are the one who’s giving the perception to mental

illness that is portrayed in social media.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research method used, the respondents, the

instrument to be utilized in the pursuit of the study, preparation and validation of

the questionnaires, procedures in gathering data and the statistical methods to

be applied in analyzing and interpreting the data gathered.

Research Design

The study will use quantitative design, descriptive comparative method.

Descriptive comparative design will be appropriate because the intention is to

describe the mental illness as it aims to identify the level among Senior High

School and College students. Comparison are made between perceive portrayal

mental illness on social media as observed among senior high and college

student. This method helps in obtaining complete and precise information.

Research Locale

This study will be conducted inside the campus of La Consolacion College

Manila as this area is the most accessible for the researchers. The school is

located in Mendiola, Manila which is administered by the Augustinian Sisters of

Our Lady of Consolation (ASOLC).

Participants

In this research the respondents are Senior High School and College

students in La Consolacion College Manila which has an exposure to social

media like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Youtube and used social media

platforms in the form of artworks, photos, narration, music and video

presentation. A total of 60 respondents which is 30 senior high school students

and 30 college students ranging from 15 years old to 25 years old.

Sampling Technique

The sampling technique used in this study is non-probability sampling

method. Purposive sampling is a non-representative subset of some larger

population, and is constructed to serve a very specific need or purpose. A

researcher may have specific group with specific knowledge and experience to a

certain study.

Research Instrument

A researcher-made questionnaires will be used to gather the necessary

data to be able to answer the questions of the study. It is a list of planned written

questions related to a particular topic intended for submission to a number of

persons to reply. A checklist is also used as a list of item for choice, verification,

or other checking purposes. The entire questionnaire will contain two parts. The

first part consists of the demographic profile of the respondents. The second
