Dear Nurse Residency Coordinator,

My name is Isabella Rahal and I am currently a senior in the College of Nursing at The
University of Arizona. I am writing in response to the New Graduate Residency Program
through Phoenix Children’s Hospital in Arizona. I will be graduating this upcoming May 2020
with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing and a minor in Public Health.

At age 14, I was diagnosed with cancer and underwent two major surgeries, multiple
ultrasounds, biopsies, and a round of radiation. This difficult experience opened my eyes into the
medical profession at large and the type of personal care needed to ensure the most positive
outcome. This drove my desire to seek more insight into the healthcare profession, which led me
to the challenging and highly regarded University of Arizona Nursing Program.

Per my current and final semester, I will have completed 188 hours of preceptorship on a
surgical unit at the Tucson Medical Center. There, I work alongside an RN on different shifts to
transition into the role of a registered nurse. This enhances my clinical decision-making, time-
management, communication and comprehensive nursing skills with providers and staff.
Throughout nursing school, I have been exposed to a variety of units and facilities, which have
helped me discover my passion and abilities are best suited to pediatric specialties.

In the spring of 2019, I worked at the Medication Management Center in Tucson, where I had an
opportunity to contact individuals enrolled in various Medicare plans and to complete a
comprehensive medication review. This experience also highlighted the importance of
medication compliance and made me more adept at understanding different drugs, interactions,
and frequent side effects. In the summer of 2019 I had the opportunity to become a caregiver for
a nonverbal 21-year-old male with Cerebral Palsy through Accent on Family Care Services in
Phoenix. I was expected to assist him with activities of daily living 2-3 times per week while his
mother worked nightshift at Chandler Regional Hospital. These included under strict instruction
by administering medications through his G-tube, transferring him by using the Hoyer lift,
completing perineal care, and remain in therapeutic communication. These three amazing
opportunities have allowed me to grow and continue to peruse a nursing education.

I became aware of the Phoenix Children’s Residency Program through a family friend in the fall
of 2019. This individual was recently diagnosed with Leukemia and chose the Phoenix
Children’s Hospital anticipating the optimal level of care for which PCH is known. Through this
encounter I was able to learn more about the hospital’s mission and methods of handling the
kinds of difficult situations people face and to which am accustomed through my schoolings and
extracurricular experiences.

I am confident that given my compassionate approach, dedication to helping others and

conscientious organization skills that I will serve as an excellent asset and contributor to the
Nurse Residency Program at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. I look forward to practicing within the
supportive organization of Valley Wise Health’s and engaging in providing hope, healing, and
the best healthcare possible for individuals and families of Arizona. Through this, I will continue


to focus on my growth, integration, and quality of healthcare provided to individuals I encounter.
