Jimmy Carter was born in Georgia, USA, in 1924 in a small rural community. He was brought up in the
Great Depression and joined the US navy. In 1953 after his father died he took control of the family
business and proved a successful manager. He entered politics at a local state level, helping to reduce
Georgia’s traditions of racial segregation. Nevertheless when Jimmy Carter ran for the president in 1976 he

by some Democrats, especially from the north.
Nevertheless he defeated the Republican candidate G. Ford in 1976 to become President of the US.
President Carter made efforts to promote human rights both at home and abroad and also creating a new
education department. On an international level he also made attempts to promote arms reductions treaty’s
such as SALT II.

and the hostage crisis. As a consequence he lost the 1980 election to R. Reagan. Since leaving the White
House Jimmy Carter has maintained a high profile, often acting as a negotiator in difficult situations. He

Should Americans be forced to Public Transportation?
First, let me define what the question is and isn’t asking. It isn’t asking if we should we all abandon cars
right now, nor is it asking if we should abandon them completely, nor is it asking if every American should do so. It
is asking weather some Americans should have to take public transit some of the time, and I would say yes.
Oil use and pollution aside, in some cities like Los Angeles and New York there just isn’t room for any
more roads, so in order for large cities to grow, they need more people to take public transit or risk permanent traffic
jam. One bus can safely hold 40 people so even at half capacity that’s nearly 20 cars’ worth of space in traffic
cleared up, and nearly 20 parking spaces that don’t need to built.
There are a lot of people that can take with transit little inconvenience but simply don’t because they never
have in the past. If residents in areas with plenty of transit had to buy transit passes as part of their property taxes
then they would have little excuse not to bus occasionally. QA number of universities already bundle a ‘U-Pass’
with their tuition feeds, forcing their students to take the bus. When given the change the majority of those students
have voted to keep these programs.
A similar system in apartments where a portion of the tenants are not issued parking spaces in exchange for
a discount on their rent would also be community car to several apartment tenants that arrange a schedule for the car,
and this program gets many positive reviews.
So yes, I would say that Americans should be forced to use public transit, as Americans whom are already
forced to do so find that it works well for them.

compasses. In 1755 he went to London, but only stayed there for two years before moving to Glasgow.
In 1764 Watt made a model of Newcomen steam engine. In this engine, the steam was pushed into a
cylinder, then condensed back into water. A year later Watt realized it would be more efficient to condense the
steam in another chamber separate from the cylinder. However, it was not until 1769 that Watt patented his new
idea, the separate condenser.
In 1775 he went into partnership with Matthew Boulton and began making steam engines which were
used for pumping water out of mines. By 1780 the Industrial Revolution was beginning to transform life in
Britain and Watt adapted his steam engines to provide a rotary motion so they could be used to power machines
in new factories.
In 1781 he used the sun to do this and four years later, steam engines were used to power machines in
cotton mills for the first time. Meanwhile, in 1782 Watt invented another major improvement, the double–acting
steam engines. In 1788 he invented the fly ball Royal to regulate the speed of steam engines and he made a pressure
gauge in 1790.
In 1785 Watt was elected a fellow of the Royal society and he retired from business in 1800. James
