Then – Chapter 12

“Horses?” Dooby repeated. This was the first

time Zoe had seen him scared.

Dooby told Zoe they would have to escape now.

They were doomed otherwise. The Horses,
another gang, and the Cats would kill the Eels.

They ran to a shed and there, Zoe saw the boat.

“Lyca!” she screamed with happiness. It looked fine and had the motor on
it. When she tried to start it, nothing happened. “Did you put petrol in it?”
she asked. Dooby just stared at her and said, “What’s petrol?” Zoe knew
they’d have to row for their lives.

As they were putting the boat into the water, Munchkin and Spat saw
what was going on and ran down to the water’s edge. Spat and Dooby
immediately started to fight. “Don’t leave without us!” shouted Spat.

Zoe saw her chance and tried to escape alone. Munchkin saw her and swam
after her. Dooby and Spat just watched in amazement as Zoe helped
Munchkin climb onto the boat.

“Why isn’t he following?” Zoe asked.

“He can’t swim,” replied Munchkin.

They rowed on in silence until Zoe shouted, “no!” She had lost her
compass. How will they know where to go?

“Go west,” Zoe remembered William saying.

Then – Chapter 13

Zoe and Munchkin kept rowing and then

discovered some water and food in the boat’s
store. Dooby had packed it. What a feast!

They also found a map and used it to work out

which direction to row in.

There was also a photograph of Dooby’s showing

him and his parents. Zoe felt guilty for hating him and leaving him behind.
Maybe he was just a child looking for his parents too.

Zoe and Mucnhkin chatted more and realised they weren’t a worried to
talk to each other as they were on Eel island.

Night came and the sea got rougher. Waves started to come over the boat
and while Zoe rowed, Munchkin had to bail water out of the boat. They
were scared and the waves got higher.

Munchkin and Zoe were thrown from the boat. They tried to swim for the
boat but couldn’t and Zoe knew she would drown. She went under the
water again and again but then thought so could feel something under her
feet. Could she have sunk to the bottom?

She saw a bright light and a voice, “Any more down there? No? Let’s go.”

The light was from an electric torch.

After – Chapter 1

Zoe slowly opened her eyes.

“She’ll be alright,” a voice said. Two women were

standing over her. They were called Rosie and
Mary.

“Where am I?” Zoe asked.

“You’re safe now. We’re in Hope which is a little place just West of what
used to be Cambridge.”

Zoe found out that Munchkin had been saved too and the doctor came in
to see them both. The friends were happy to be back together.

“We’ve not had anyone come from Norwich since about a year ago on the
ship,” the doctor said.

“My parents were on that ship! Do you know them? Are they here?,” Zoe
gasped.

The doctor hadn’t heard of them and told her they probably could never
be found.

But Munchkin and Zoe knew they had to go to Newhome where most of the
people from that ship went.

After – Chapter 2

Munchkin and Zoe left the hospital for Newhome.

Munchkin had found out the directions and got
them some food and new clothes.

They walked for miles up the coast. It was like a

different world and they couldn’t believe the
amount of land there was compared to Norwich
and Eel island.

Eventually, when they hadn’t arrived and the sun was going down, they
decided to find shelter for the night and slept in a barn. When they woke
up they saw that they were sharing the barn with a man but he was dead.
It reminded the friends that they had not escaped the horror.

After their food had run out, they finally reached a sign that said
‘Newhome’. “Do you know my parents?” Zoe asked a lady who lived there.
She told them to visit the cottage.

Zoe’s father answered the door. Her mother was sitting on a bed. She had
found them!

“Why didn’t you come and find me?” Zoe asked, crying with anger.

“We couldn’t. Mum needed medical care and…please understand Zoe,” her
father begged. He pointed to a box. Zoe walked over to it and saw the
smallest baby boy she had ever seen. “He’s your brother,” her mum said.

“He’s lovely,” Zoe blubbed as she cried again, this time with happiness.

They called the baby William.
