CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

The grouping of discourses based on their content or substance is relatively easy because
of the existence of space in a number of media, such as print media, which have specifically
grouped discourse on the basis of the substance or content of the contents discussed, said,
reported, or discussed, by the language user.

Human life is often so complex that often one problem with another is closely related. As
a result, the various problems are very difficult to separate so that law and crime or social and
political discourse, for example, are almost difficult to separate. However, legal and cultural
discourse or military discourse and health discourse can be easily separated. Actually, the content
or substance of the discourse must be separated and described relatively.

Based on the realm and substance it proposes, the discourse can be divided into political
discourse, social discourse, cultural discourse, economic discourse, military discourse, legal
discourse, and criminal discourse. Discourses that develop and are used specifically and are
limited to their fields are called registers, so registers are discourses that are only used in
environments and groups with such nuances.
CHAPTER II

DISCUSSION

2.1 Definision of Hortatory Exposition Text

Hortatory exposition is a type of spoken or written text that is intended to explain the
listeners or readers that something should or should not happen or be done. To strengthen the
explanation, the speaker or writer needs several arguments as the main cause of the giving of
ideas themselves. In another sense, this text can be called an argumentation.

Hortatory exposition is popular among science, undergraduate groups and other

educated people. Hortatory exposition can be found on scientific books, journals, magazines,
newspaper articles, editorial writing, academic speech or lectures and research report.

2.2 Communicative Objectives of Hortatory Exposition Text

Different from analytical exposition text the communicative purpose of describing and
influencing the reader that the events described are important, in the hortatory expostion text
the communicative purpose is to expose and influence the reader that they should and should
not.

2.3 Generic Structure of Hortatory Exposition Text

1. Thesis

The contain of thesis is introduction to the main idea of a effect or event that will be raised or
discussed.

2. Arguments

The contain of argument is the opinions of the writer that support the main idea. The more
opinions the authors write, the more attractive a Hortatory Exposition Text, because readers tend
to believe in an event if there are many opinions that support in it.

3. Recommendation

Recommendation contains a recommendation or solicitation writer to the reader.

2.4 Social Function of Hortatory Exposition Text

To persuade the readers that something should or should not be case or be done.

2. Using abstract noun: policy, advantage, etc

3. Using action verbs

4. Using thinking verbs

5. Using modals

6. Using adverb: certainly, surely, etc

7. Using temporal connectives/transition: firstly, secondly, etc

8. Using evaluative words: important, valuable, trustworthy, etc

9. Using passive voice

2.6 Example Of Hortatory Exposition Text

Example 1

Corruption

Thesis

Do you know what the meaning of corruption is? What is the relation between money
and corruption? Well, corruption is common everywhere in theworld, even in the United States.
It’s just a matter of intensity. However, it is quite shocking when one reliable survey claims
Jakarta as the most corrupt place inIndonesia.

Argument 1
The survey has made me sad, actually, because I stay and earn a living here inthe capital.
As most people know, Tanjung Priok port smuggling is not a new thing atall. Entrepreneurs who

want to minimize their tax payments tend to do such a thingmore often. They even bribe the
officials.

Argument 2

Well, I think the measures taken so far to overcome the problem by punishingthe
corruptors is still not far enough. We have to prevent the younger generationsfrom getting a bad
mentality caused by corruption.

Recommendation

I believe we should start at the earliest stages in school and I think everyoneshould be
involved in the effort to eradicate corruption. We must not make anydistinction.

Example 2

Television for Social Construction

Thesis

Television is today a part of daily life. It is not only a source of entertainment but also
news and information. television is also a valuable tool for science, education and industry.

Argument 1

What makes television even more interesting is that action is accompanied by sound, so
that we can see as well as hear what on the television. Today we can stay at home and enjoy
entertainment that once could be seen only in cinema, theaters and sport arenas. Television
enables to meet important people. It can bring important guests and important scene to receivers
who are located anywhere.

Argument 2

Television has a great influence on our idea about what is right and what is wrong. It
influences the way which we should behave.Television has close related to our life in general.
Some times the value and life style we get from television are in conflict with those that we get at
home and school.
Recommendation

Critics point out that crime and TV show often appeal to taste for violence, while many
games and quizzes appeal to greedy. it is important to suggest that television should be used for
socially constructive purpose for the shake of better life.

Example 3

How To Use The Internet Should Be Required

Thesis

In this age of technology all students in the Montana University System should be
required to learn Internet use, and there should be a course to teach it as a core requirement.

Argument 1

The first reason is going to school in the twenty-first century almost all classes require
some computer use. Every time you go to the library at M.S.U.C.O.T, you need to know how to go
online as there are very few books anymore, and almost everything is on the Web.

Argument 2

Following that when you go to find a job, more and more companies are using
computers. It’s getting almost impossible to find a job that dosen’t require computer skills of
some sort. One of the big things is communications within the company. Most companies use
electronic communications of some sort, such as e-mail or memos on line.

Argument 3

Even the jobs people used to think of as unskilled labors such as a mechanic are using
computers. All cars built today have a computer built into them. The mechanic uses it to figure
out what’s wrong with your car, then a lot of time they go online to find out the beat way to fix it
faster, saving time and money.

Reccomendation

Some people might say that the courses that need to have computer skills have them
built into them, but I say we should get a jump on the future and have all students learn the
internet. If people don’t learn it, they will fall behind in the job market and in life.
