Written Case:

We chose Bayer India’s HO in Hyderabad for our Design Thinking project. Our
experience of meeting the people from the company was really amazing and
helped us a lot in our Design Thinking project. We met Mr. Srinivas Kumar,
Procurement Head of Bayer (India) and Mr. Kishore, AGM of Planning and
Control of Bayer (India). We learnt plenty of things from them which helped us
to get some insights of Design Thinking.
After talking to Mr. Srinivas we got to understand him personally as well as
professionally. He gave us the information about various stakeholders of the
company and the pivotal role played by them. He is a person who is motivated
by his work and loves to come office. He shared with us the vision of Bayer
which is helping them to create value for customers. He told us about the
different touch points of their customers. Like the end consumers place orders
either on phone or can buy through the website whereas, the business to
business transactions happens online as well as in the office because the B2B
partners negotiate more often face to face.
Mr. Kishore was also really resourceful for us. He shared with us the role
played by him in the company. He is a person who believes in work-life
balance. From Design Thinking point of view we observed that he is a person
who is more into technical areas.
After conversing with both of them we observed that both of them were facing
some challenges in discharging their duties. Mr. Srinivas was concerned about
less number of people in procurement department. He told us that due to the
less people the pressure on each individual is more which sometimes hamper
the whole department’s efficiency.
Whereas, while talking to Mr. Kishore, we understood that he was more
concerned about the inter-departmental communication. He shared with us
that for preparing the budgets for the year, they need information from all the
departments but they were not getting timely information due to
communication gap which ultimately delays other processes also.
We then tried to explore the real problems behind these issues. We
questioned them in the interview using the basic approach of 5 why’s of Design
Thinking.
After asking them the 4th why question, we got our answer that all these issues
have arisen due to the recent merger of Monsanto and Bayer. Mr. Kishore was
facing the problem because recently Bayer had retrenched around 6000
people globally. Due to this retrenchment the workload on the remaining
employees increased as now they were doing work beyond their capacity.
Likewise, Mr. Kishore’s concern was also ultimately because of this merger as
the organisation’s structure was being changed to Flat Structure by the new
management. Due to this the integration between different departments was
difficult to achieve and hence resulted in delayed information to the planning
and budgeting department.
We learnt that the issues arise from a problem that may not be visible in the
first place and we, as managers have to dig deep and look into the root cause
to identify the real problem.
