Poverty is hunger

Poverty is lack of shelter

Poverty is not knowing how to read
and is being sick and not being able to
see a doctor.
Poverty is not having access to school
and not knowing how to read
Poverty is not having a job, is fear for
the future, living one day at a time.
Poverty is losing a child to illness
brought about by unclean water
Poverty is powerlessness, lack of
representation and freedom
According to UNICEF (United Nations International
Children’s Emergency Fund),22,000 children die each
day due to poverty. And they “die quietly in some of
the poorest villages on earth, far removed from the
scrutiny and the conscience of the world.Being meek
and weak in life makes these dying multitudes even
more invisible in death .”
The poorest 40 percent of the world’s population
account for 5 percent of global income. The richest 20
percent accounts for three-quarters of world income.
Almost half the world-about three million people-live
on less than USD$2.50 a day
Poverty in the18 century:In the 18th century probably half
the population lived at subsistence or bare survival level
During the 18th century the Poor Law continued to
operate. However a law of 1723 allowed parishes to build
workhouses to house the destitute. Still conditions in 18th
century workhouses were generally less harsh than in
Victorian ones
At the end of the 19th century more than 25% of the
population was living at or below subsistence level.
Surveys indicated that around 10% were very poor and
could not afford even basic necessities such as enough
nourishing food. Between 15% and 20% had just enough
money to live on (provided they did not lose their job or
have to take time off work through illness).
Overpopulation
Global Distribution of Resources
inability to meet high standards of living
and costs of living,
Inadequate Education and Employment
Environmental Degradation
Economic and Demographic Trends
Individual Responsibility and Welfare
Dependency
Children who grow up in poverty suffer more
persistent, frequent, and severe health problems
Many infants born into poverty have a low birth
weight, which is associated with many preventable
mental and physical disabilitiesthey are also more
likely to die before their first birthday.
Children raised in poverty tend to miss school
more often because of illness. These children also
have a much higher rate of accidents than do
other children,
Homelessness:Compared to children living in
poverty but having homes, homeless children are
less likely to receive proper nutrition and
immunization.
This are the five ways to help the poverty victims
Food:Food is one of the basic necessities for any human
being. Food has become scarce in the continent because of the
decline in food production brought about by numerous factors.
More and more victims depends on hand outs to feed its
population and people are dying of hunger. Help in the form
of food can make a huge difference.
Health care:Health care is another way to help poverty
victims in Africa. Almost every homestead has been affected
by the limitation or shortage of adequate access to health care
in the continent (UN, world health.org). Some deaths are
caused by the lack of health care as some of the diseases like
AIDS are manageable but people die earlier than they should.
Shelter:There is a growing population of the homeless in the
continent who can no longer be ignored. Almost every city has
people who stay there, sleep in pipes etc. These people have
been displaced by different reasons but the common
denominator is that all of them are homeless.
Education:I strongly believe that one of the ways to fight
poverty and to cut the chain of poverty is through education. If a
member of poverty stricken family is given access to education
it is believed he/she would generate income and take care of his/
her siblings as dependants their lives would not be the same.
Different reasons deprive the children of education and which
they much need to change their lives.
Self -sustaining projects:It may be hard to always be donating to
people but if they also try to move from their poverty situations it
becomes a lesser burden. In some parts of the continent the people
only need mealier-meal but they are able to make a living by
growing vegetables to feed themselves and sell the surplus. It is
encouraging to see the people trying to help themselves than
solely relying on hand outs. Helping the victims to start their self-
sustaining projects especially in food production is one way one
would help to fight poverty and the people themselves can also
help themselves. They may be poor and hungry but they had
workers.
We could learn to be grateful of what we have. The people that
are living in poverty are without food, drink, shelter, educational
and so on.
But we,the fortunate one, are complaining about what food we
get, whether it is delicious or not, complaining to get the latest
gadget,not wanting to go to school,wasting food,complaining
not having air conditioner and so on.
For those people in poverty, they have no choice but to eat what
can find and they are always in suffering. Can they complain
and grumble so much like what we are doing? We could think
about our attitude. We could learn how to appreciate what we
have now and always be willing to help the less fortunate.
