Sub-theme 1: Pre-Hospital Care

‘Pre-hospital’ includes all settings prior to and beyond the emergency

department’s resuscitation room. These healthcare settings are specifically
designed for resuscitation and critical care , aiming towards getting the
patients to the hospital within a time limit known as the ‘golden hour’.
Therefore, in the time before the ambulance arrives, the key components
in pre- hospital care are basic first-aid by the general public and lifesaving
interventions provided by trained first responders. It is fundamental that pre-
hospital care covers rural areas, underprivileged regions as well as various
environments and scenarios including mass casualty (MASCAL) in conflict
or disaster areas, high altitude regions and areas with extreme temperature
such as mountains or space.

01
Subtheme 2: In-Hospital Care

In-hospital trauma care widely differs between coun-

tries. Major Trauma networks are hugely influenced
by patient flow (with regards to geographical factors),
treatment systems (availability of healthcare pro-
fessionals and medical equipment), patient factors
(age and socioeconomic backgrounds) and clinical
care policies. For example, in the UK, trauma care
was re-structured in 2012 by the implementation of
Major Trauma Centres (MTCs) whereby MTCs receive
patients based on a tiered-team response and serve
as the ultimate destination for definitive treatment.
Similarly, systems change in other countries have

impacted the process and patient outcomes.

Trauma care provision in hospital ranges from life-sav-

ing interventions, pre-operative procedures, definitive
Theme

treatment with specialist intervention to post-oper-

ative recovery and early acute phase rehabilitation.
Within the realm of operations, Damage Control
Surgery (DCS) and Damage Control Resuscitation
(DCR) have been developed to prioritise short-term
physiological recovery of traumatic injuries rather
than a long-term anatomical reconstruction. Within
the trauma care network itself, there is a wider distri-
bution of service provision that extends to non-hos-
pital-based care for a holistic patient recovery. This
requires multidisciplinary, effective and efficient
communication between all those responsible for the
patient’s care - the patient, healthcare professionals,
family members and other carers involved.

Despite the changes done to improve the trauma

care network, there are still ongoing debates and
controversies pertaining to the optimal way to organ-
ise appropriate care for trauma patients.

02
Subtheme 3: Post-Hospital Care

Within the realm of trauma, one could argue that

the real battle is fought after the operation – during
post-hospital care. From physical rehabilitation to re-
cuperating from post-traumatic mental repercussions,
this process of returning to a normal life is anything
but effortless. As a result, some patients do not reha-
bilitate as expected, leading to a lack of recovery as
well as congestion of the acute patient pathway.

While the majority of trauma patients require rehabili-

tative services commissioned at a general level, those
with more complex needs entail receiving specialist

rehabilitation from a multidisciplinary team. Both forms

of rehabilitation are not just limited to in-patient care,
but with out-patient care and home-based rehabilita-
tion existing to facilitate community reintegration and

a trauma-free life for patients. Hence, it is important

to consider how healthcare and social care services
can work cohesively to support the rehabilitation of
trauma patients.

Ultimately, providing effective trauma care is a step-

ping stone towards improving healthcare worldwide.
In this conference, we aim to provide a platform for
delegates to come together, discuss and explore
about trauma care around the world.

General
Overview
The research question for all three competitions may be based on one of
the three branches of the over-arching theme – Trauma Care: Same Prob-
lems with Different Solutions – that we will be discussing in this conference:
Pre-Hospital, In-Hospital and Post-Hospital Care. However, chapters are not
required to stick to these three categories and are free to explore other
areas under the general umbrella of trauma care.

For the White Paper & Video category, the AMSA chapter participating will be
required to produce a video as an introduction to their motion and explana-
tion of their solution/policy.

Judging Procedure
1 Screening: Judges will be invited to evaluate all emailed entries based
on the criteria in Appendices A-C. The total score of each entry (not in-
cluding points for Oral Presentation) will be determined. The scores will
be tallied by the organisers. The judging process will be blinded.

2 Chapters with the top 8 mean scores of the Scientific Paper/Poster/

White Paper & Video Competitions will be invited to give their presenta-
tion during AMSC

3 Emailed entries along with the research data should not be edited with
the exception of adding the names of the authors, schools, and other
affiliations. The content of the oral presentation slides submitted by the
final 8 chapters will be counter-checked by the organising committee.

4 Public health experts will judge the competition finals. Finalists will be
judged based on the criteria provided.

5 Scientific papers, scientific posters and white papers presented in the

conference will be sent to J-AMSA Editor-in-Chief to be published as a
special volume of J-AMSA.

Chapters with the top 3 mean scores of each competition will be award-
6 ed in the Closing Ceremony on the 6th July 2020. In cases of a tie, the
judges will be informed and may deliberate with one another to break
the tie. The judges’ decision is final. Special prizes will also be awarded
during the Closing Ceremony.
