PREFACE
DEP (Design and Engineering Practice) publications reflect the views, at the time of publication, of Shell Global Solutions
International B.V. (Shell GSI) and, in some cases, of other Shell Companies.
These views are based on the experience acquired during involvement with the design, construction, operation and
maintenance of processing units and facilities. Where deemed appropriate DEPs are based on, or reference international,
regional, national and industry standards.
The objective is to set the standard for good design and engineering practice to be applied by Shell companies in oil and
gas production, oil refining, gas handling, gasification, chemical processing, or any other such facility, and thereby to help
achieve maximum technical and economic benefit from standardization.
The information set forth in these publications is provided to Shell companies for their consideration and decision to
implement. This is of particular importance where DEPs may not cover every requirement or diversity of condition at each
locality. The system of DEPs is expected to be sufficiently flexible to allow individual Operating Units to adapt the
information set forth in DEPs to their own environment and requirements.
When Contractors or Manufacturer/Suppliers use DEPs, they shall be solely responsible for such use, including the quality
of their work and the attainment of the required design and engineering standards. In particular, for those requirements not
specifically covered, the Principal will typically expect them to follow those design and engineering practices that will
achieve at least the same level of integrity as reflected in the DEPs. If in doubt, the Contractor or Manufacturer/Supplier
shall, without detracting from his own responsibility, consult the Principal.
The right to obtain and to use DEPs is restricted, and is granted by Shell GSI (and in some cases by other Shell
Companies) under a Service Agreement or a License Agreement. This right is granted primarily to Shell companies and
other companies receiving technical advice and services from Shell GSI or another Shell Company. Consequently, three
categories of users of DEPs can be distinguished:
1) Operating Units having a Service Agreement with Shell GSI or another Shell Company. The use of DEPs by these
Operating Units is subject in all respects to the terms and conditions of the relevant Service Agreement.
2) Other parties who are authorised to use DEPs subject to appropriate contractual arrangements (whether as part
of a Service Agreement or otherwise).
3) Contractors/subcontractors and Manufacturer/Suppliers under a contract with users referred to under 1) or 2)
which requires that tenders for projects, materials supplied or - generally - work performed on behalf of the said
users comply with the relevant standards.
Subject to any particular terms and conditions as may be set forth in specific agreements with users, Shell GSI disclaims
any liability of whatsoever nature for any damage (including injury or death) suffered by any company or person
whomsoever as a result of or in connection with the use, application or implementation of any DEP, combination of DEPs
or any part thereof, even if it is wholly or partly caused by negligence on the part of Shell GSI or other Shell Company. The
benefit of this disclaimer shall inure in all respects to Shell GSI and/or any Shell Company, or companies affiliated to these
companies, that may issue DEPs or advise or require the use of DEPs.
Without prejudice to any specific terms in respect of confidentiality under relevant contractual arrangements, DEPs shall
not, without the prior written consent of Shell GSI, be disclosed by users to any company or person whomsoever and the
DEPs shall be used exclusively for the purpose for which they have been provided to the user. They shall be returned after
use, including any copies which shall only be made by users with the express prior written consent of Shell GSI. The
copyright of DEPs vests in Shell Group of companies. Users shall arrange for DEPs to be held in safe custody and Shell
GSI may at any time require information satisfactory to them in order to ascertain how users implement this requirement.
All administrative queries should be directed to the DEP Administrator in Shell GSI.

PART I INTRODUCTION
1.1 SCOPE
This DEP specifies requirements and gives recommendations for materials, qualification,
application, testing and handling of materials required for the application of reinforced
concrete coating externally to pre-coated pipe for use in pipeline transportation systems for
the petroleum and natural gas industries in marine environments, estuaries, rivers, wadis,
swamps, etc. It is based on to ISO 21809-5:2010.
The external application of concrete is primarily used for the negative buoyancy of pipes
used in buried or submerged pipeline systems and/or for the mechanical protection of the
pipe and its pre-coating.
This DEP is applicable to concrete thicknesses of 25 mm (1 in) or greater.
Part III of this DEP gives amendments and supplements the clauses of ISO 21809-5:2010.
This DEP includes the installation of anodes (including pin brazing) into the qualification but
excludes the design or purchase of anodes.
The scope of this DEP does not include:
a) specific design requirements (these would be established in the pipeline design);
b) the choice of anti-corrosion coating or its application;
c) the design, purchase and installation of buckle/crack arrestors;
d) the use of intermediate coatings (e.g. anti-slip coatings);
e) slotting of the concrete to reduce bending stiffness.
This is a revision of the DEP of the same number dated December 1999; see (1.5)
regarding the changes.

Add to clause:
Specimens prepared by ASTM C1176 or ASTM C1435 shall be approved by the Principal.
11.2.6.2 Preparation of Specimens from Hardened Concrete
Add to clause:
Manufacturer/Supplier shall provide the time required for the concrete specimens to
sufficiently hardened. If the Manufacturer/Supplier does not have this information available,
then a time of seven (7) days will be assumed.
11.2.6.3 Testing of Specimens from Hardened Concrete
Add to clause:
Compressive strength shall be no less than 20 MPa (2,900 psi) at seven (7) days. Shorter
durations are acceptable based on demonstrated qualification tests and/or subsequent core
tests.
11.2.7 Water absorption
Modify the following clause:
Hardened concrete coating specimens that have achieved a minimum compressive
strength of 20MPa shall be tested in accordance with Annex A using water saturated tests.
11.2.8 Impact resistance
Add to clause:
DNV RP F-111 shall be used to determine the appropriate scenario for impact testing as
defined in the purchase order.
If no scenario is provided or if for qualification, the requirements below shall be used.
Figure 1 provides an example of the test rig setup.
Impact testing shall be performed as follows for qualification or if no scenario is provided:
a) The concrete coated test pipe shall be rigidly supported from the rear over its full
length by moist sand. The pipe shall be held rigidly at its ends by wooden cradles
and wedges to prevent movement of the pipe under impact.
b) The point of impact on the concrete shall be at the 3 o’clock position. The pipe shall
be supported so that impact of the concrete is made when the hammer is at the
lowest point in its swing.
c) Testing shall be carried out with the maximum impact load 90° to pipe axis. The test
pipe shall be supported with a minimum of 2 m (7 ft) concrete section either side of
the section under test. Impact blows shall be directed on the same location and the
condition of the concrete recorded after each blow, until the anti-corrosion coating is
exposed. Testing shall be performed with 2.68 tonnes (5 908 lb) at one (1) location
90° to the pipe axis
d) Testing shall be carried out with a reduced impact load 60° to the pipe axis. The test
pipe or rig shall be moved along at least another 2 m (7 ft) and the pipe impacted in
the 60° position to the line of motion of the hammer. Five (5) impact blows shall be
directed on the same location and the condition of the concrete recorded after each
blow. Testing shall be performed with 1.84 tonnes (4056.5) at one (1) location 60° to
the pipe axis.

Pipes subject to impact testing shall be scrapped and not repaired or incorporated in the
pipeline.
11.3 Restesting
11.3.2 Density
Modify the following clause:
If the spare test specimens meet the density requirements, the previously suspect concrete
coated pipes shall be accepted with Principal approval.
11.3.3 Compressive strength
Modify the following clause:
If the spare test specimens meet the specified strength requirements, the previously
suspect concrete coated pipes shall be accepted with Principal approval.
11.3.4 Water absorption
Modify the following clause:
If the spare test specimens meet the specified water absorption requirements, the
previously suspect concrete coated pipes shall be accepted with Principal approval.
12.1 General
Add to clause:
The Principal may reject concrete-coated pipes when any of the previously stated
acceptance criteria are not met, and in such case the coating shall be completely removed
rather than partially repaired. Where repairs are permitted in accordance with this DEP,
they shall be repaired in accordance with this section.
Concrete used for repairs shall contain the same proportions of dry constituents as the
original coating but the water/cement ratio may be higher, to improve workability.
Prior to application of repair material, the defective area shall be thoroughly cleaned by
removing concrete coating sufficiently to clean under the reinforcing bars and the concrete
edges shall be cut so as to form a holding key.
All repairs shall be moist-cured for a minimum period of 48 hours, or until the repaired area
has attained a compressive strength of 14 MPa (2030 psi).
The Contractor shall demonstrate that the procedures for repair application and cure will
result in an acceptable coating with the compressive strength of repair being at least equal
to the strength of the compressive strength requirements in Table 2. All repair methods
shall be subject to the Principal’s approval.
12.3 Cracks
Add to clause:
Longitudinal cracks in excess of 1000 mm (39 in) in length or extending the full depth of
the coating are not acceptable and coating with such a crack shall be removed for the
entire length of pipe.
12.4 Gaps
Modify the following clause:
Gaps between the pre-coated pipe and the concrete coating in excess of 1,5 mm (0.06 in) ,
extending more than 150 mm (6 in) from the beginning of the concrete cutback, that have a
length of more than 60° around the circumference of the pipe, and which remain for at
least 30 minutes after the pipes have been taken out of stockpile shall be repaired.
13. Markings
Add to clause:
Unless otherwise instructed in the purchase order, the following is considered good
practice:
• All concrete-coated pipes shall be colour-coded in order to readily identify the
different categories of pipe thickness, coating thickness and attachments. A colour
coding scheme shall be specified in the Scope of Work. Colour bands using marine
paint shall be applied near both ends of the concrete coating. The paint shall also be
suitable for long-term storage at the designated final delivery location. These bands
shall be 50 mm (2 in) wide starting at 150 mm (6 in) from each end of the concrete
coating. The bands shall be applied immediately after concrete curing.
• Contractor shall present a method of identifying Principal materials. If no method
exists, a Yellow band [50 mm (2 in) minimum wide] shall be placed at the middle of
the joint to identify Principal owned pipe.
