Modern Technologies

History:
Alexander Graham Bell invented telephone in 1877 and made the first phone call in 1878.

Motorola introduced some of its first cell phones during the 1980s.

Those phones were completely different from the devices we have today since from no side they
were cost effected and handy.

The first smart phone was developed by IBM and BellSouth which came out to in public in 1993.

These smart phones are advancing at a very fast pace and are not restricted to just internet
browsing or playing games.

Now you can do every possible thing with these modern handheld devices.

Mobile Phone:
Mobile phones are widely recognized as a potentially transformative technology platform for
developing nations. Mobile phones are transforming the lives of many users in developing
countries and are widely recognized as an important current and future technology platform for
developing nations. Mobile phones are considered important for development because they offer
benefits such as mobility and security to owners. Also due to their unique characteristics of
working using the radio spectrum they need not to rely on physical infrastructure such as roads
and phone wires, and base-stations can be powered using their own generators in places where
there is no electrical grid. Mobile phones only require basic literacy, and therefore are accessible
to a large portion of the population. Finally, mobiles enjoy some technical advantages that make
them particularly attractive for development. In addition to voice communication, mobile phones
allow for the transfer of data, which can be used in the context of applications for the purposes of
health, education, commerce or governance.

1st Generation: Mobile systems were designed to offer a single service i.e. speech.

2nd Generation: mobile systems were designed primarily to offer speech with a limited
capability to offer data at low rates.

3rd Generation: offer high quality multi-media services and operate in different environments.

Popular technology used in mobile Communication:

2G GSM (Global system for mobile communication):
3G UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System)

4G LTE (Long Term Evolution)

Television:
Television or TV is a telecommunication medium used for transmitting moving images (black-
and-white), or in color, and in two or three dimensions and sound. Amongst all the mass media
today, television attracts the largest number of viewers. Its audience is greater in size than any
other media audiences. This is because television is able to attract the audiences of all age
groups, literate illiterate of the society.

There is no doubt about the fact that the technology has given us a major tool in television. It is
very powerful persuasive mass communication medium. Effectiveness of this tool is to enhance
the development process. Television is a mass medium for entertainment, education, news,
politics, gossip, and advertising.

By 1950s, television had become the main medium for shaping public opinions. The electronic
television was demonstrated to the public in 1928. ‘’ technical difficulties, corporate
competition, and World War II postponed its wide spread introduction to the public until 1946.”

After World War II, an improved form of black-and-white TV broadcasting became popular in
the United States and Britain, and television sets became commonplace in homes, businesses,
and institutions. In the mid-1960s, color broadcasting was introduced in the US and most other
developed countries.

At the end of the first decade of the 2000s, digital television transmissions greatly increased in
popularity. Another development was the move from standard-definition television (SDTV) to
high-definition television (HDTV), which provides a resolution that is substantially higher. Since
2010, with the invention of smart television, Internet television has increased the availability of
television programs and movies via the Internet through streaming video services such as
Netflix, Amazon Video, iPlayer, Hulu, Roku and Chromecast.

Impact of technology:
Throughout the ages, merchants looked for trade routes and hired ships or pack animals to get
their merchandise to customers.

Today, sales can be conducted through something as simple as a cell phone. If you have Internet
access, you can put your business online and compete with top companies throughout the world.

The most fundamental effect of technology is greater productivity in terms of both quality and
quantity. This is the main reason why technology at all levels is adopted.
