CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background
Medical devices (Indonesian Law Number 36, 2009 about concerning health) are
instruments, apparatus, machines, implants that contain drugs, which are used to prevent,
diagnose, cure, and alleviate diseases, treat sick people and restore health to humans and
form structures and improve bodily functions.

B. Formulate Problem
1. What is the meaning of medical devices ?
2. What is the function of various medical devices ?

C. Purpose
1. To find out the meaning of medical devices.
2. To fid out the function of various medical devices.
CHAPTER II

DISCUSSION

A. UNDERSTANDING OF DEVICES
Republic of Indonesian Health Minister Regulation Number 220/Minister of
Health/ Per/IX/1976 Date. 6 like 1976 :
Medical Devices are goods, instruments, apparatus, or tools including each
component, part or equipment that’s produced, sold or intended for use in :
1. Treatment and health care, diagnosis, healing, relief/prevention of diseases,
abnormalities in the body or symptoms in humans.
2. Recovery, repair or change in bodily functions or human body structures.
3. Diagnosis of pregnancy in humans/treatment during pregnancy and after
childbirth, including baby treatment.
4. Efforts to prevent pregnancy in humans and those not included class of drugs.

B. KINDS OF MEDICAL EQUIPMENT


1. ABBOCATH
The function of this needle is to insert the outer abbocath made from plastic. After
everything goes into a vein then the inner needle will be removed and only the
outside needle from plastic stay in vein. Because it’s the outer part that will later
serve as an entry point for intravenous fluids or others.

2. BAG AND MASK


Used to help or make breathing oxygen in the balloon must be pressed to enter the
patient’s lungs.

3. IV BAG
A fluid-filled bag is pumped into the patient's body.

4. OTOSCOPE
To look into the external ear cavity.

5. BANDAGE
A cloth covering is placed over the wound to prevent bleeding, swelling and
infection.

6. EYE CHART
A poster of letters, words, and combinations of numbers of various sizes used to
test one's vision.
7. BLOOD PRESSURE MONITOR (SPHYGHMOMANOMETER)
A device that measures the strength of blood flow through a person's body.

8. FLOW METER
It works to measure the amount of flow in the breath.

9. EPISIOTOMY SCISSORS
For cutting the perineum, especially if the mother’s perineum giving birth stiff.
Perineum is the area between the vulva and anus.

10. FORCEPS
Instruments used during operations and medical procedures (assisting doctors in
pulling, holding, and taking).

11. DRESSING
Protective cover placed over the wound.

12. MEDICINE CUP


Used as a drug cup.

13. FEEDING TUBE


To provide nutrition / food intake or fluid through the nose.

14. URINE BAG


To collect urine associated with a catheter balloon / foley catheter to secrete / take
urine.

15. STOMACH TUBE


To collect fluid/liquid fluid, rinsing/washing the contents of stomach, for giving
drugs.

16. PRIVACY CURTAIN


Separation curtain to maintain patient privacy.

17. WHEELCHAIR
A wheelchair used to help mobilize patients.

18. TONGUE DEPRESSOR


Holding the tongue while being examined.

19. BEDPAN
A Bedpan or bedpan is a receptacle used for the toileting of a bedridden patient in
a health care facility, and is usually made of metal, glass, ceramic, or plastic. A
bedpan can be used for both urinary and fecal discharge
20. CANNULA
To create a permanent pathway to a vein (or artery) for the purpose of repeated
injections or infusion of intravenous fluids.

21. CARDIOVERTER/DEFIBRILLATOR
To correct arrhythmias of the heart or to start up a heart that is not beating.

22. DYALISER
To remove toxic materials from the blood that are generally removed by the
kidneys; used in case of kidney failure.

23. ENDOSCOPE
To look inside the gastrointestinal tract, used mainly in surgery or by surgical
consultants.

24. SURGICAL SCISSORS


Used for for dissecting or cutting.

25. HYPODERMIC NEEDLE/SYRINGE


For injections and aspiration of blood or fluid from the body.

26. KIDNEY DISH


As a tray for instruments, gauze, tissue, etc.

27. MEASURING TAPE


For length, height, head circumference and girth measurements.

28. MEDICAL HALOGEN PENLIGHT


To see into the eye, natural orifices, etc. and to test for pupillary light reflex, etc.

29. MEDICAL ULTRASOUND


To create an image of internal body structures.

30. NEBULIZER
To produce aerosols of drugs to be administered by respiratory route.

31. OPHTHALMOSCOPE
To look at the retina.

32. OXYGEN MASK AND TUBES


To deliver gases to the mouth/nostrils to assist in oxygen intake or to administer
aerosolized or gaseous drugs.
33. PIPETTE OR DROPPER
To measure out doses of liquid, specially in children.

34. RADIOGRAPHY
To view internal body structures.

35. REFLEX HAMMER


To test motor reflexes of the body.

36. SUCTION DEVICE


To suck up blood or secretions.

37. TRANSFUSION KIT


To transfuse blood and blood products.

38. TUNING FORK


To test for deafness and to categorize it.

39. VENTILATOR
To assist or carry out the mechanical act of inspiration and expiration so the non-
respiring patient can do so; a common component of "life support".

40. CROCODILE FORCEPS


To remove foreign bodies from ear or nasal cavities.

41. THERMOMETER
To find out body temperature.

42. HOT BOTTLES


For hot compresses.

43. ICE BAGS


For cold compresses.

44. COLOSTOMY BAG


To accommodate feces in patients after colon surgery (artificial intestinal surgery
through muscle and abdominal skin).

45. AIR CUSION


As a seat on hemorrhoids / hemorrhoids.
CHAPTER III
CONCLUTION

A. Conclution
Medical equipment is instrument, machines, implant which contains drugs is used
to prevent, diagnose, cure and alleviate diseases, treat sick people and restore health to
humans or form structures and improve bodily functions.

B. Sugesstion
Medical staff/students should be better able to understand and be able to explain the
meaning, purpose and function of medical devices in theory. With this knowledge, it’s
expected that medical staff/students can channel and apply it in daily life and
work/practice environments.

MEDICAL EQUIPMENT CONVERSATION
(BETWEEN DOCTOR, NURSE, PATIENT)

(A nurse is sitting at a table in a clinic and then she has a guest from Australia)
Mrs. Granger : Hello, good afternoon.
Nurse : Hello, good afternoon, Miss. Can I help you ?
Mrs. Granger : Are you a doctor ?
Nurse : Sorry, Miss. I’m the nurse of this clinic today. Are you looking for a doctor ?
Mrs. Granger : Sure. Can I meet the doctor now ?
Nurse : Of course. Wait a minute. Please, Sit down.
(Then the nurse invited the doctor to see their guest)
Doctor : Hello, Miss. How are you ?
Mrs. Granger : Hello, doctor. I just feel not good today.
Doctor : Okay, any complaint except that ?
Mrs. Granger : Nope, I just wanna check my vital sign to know about my condition. But, I don’t
need any medicine from this clinic because I already have it in my room. Can I
check my vital sign here without medicine ?
Doctor : Of course, no problem. Nurse, Can you please check her vital sign in procedure
room.
Nurse : Okay, doctor. Miss, please follow me to procedure room and laying on the bed. I
will check your vital sign.
(The patient enter to procedure room, laying on the bed while the nurse take
sphygmomanometer, thermometer, and oxymeter beside her.)
Nurse : Miss, give me your hand, please.
(Mrs. Granger give her hand to nurse for get blood pressure procedure. After it, the Nurse set the
cuff around patient’s arm and explain about the procedure).
Nurse : Miss, I will measuring your blood pressure.
Mrs. Granger : Okay, nurse. But, may I know what is that?
Nurse : Oww, this is sphygmomanometer. The fuction is to measure your blood
pressure.
Mrs. Granger : Nice.
Nurse : Okay, your blood pressure result is 100/80 mmHg.
Mrs. Granger : Is it normal, nurse ?
Nurse : Are you feeling dizzy right now ?
Mrs. Granger : Of course, a little bit. But, I can handle it. Don’t worry.
Nurse : Have you not been resting lately, Miss ?
Mrs. Granger : Yeah, you know I come to this country for holiday. I must spend my day to find
a new place for my journey list.
Nurse : Your blood pressure is within normal limit. Then, I want to check your
saturation and your pulse rate, Miss.
Mrs. Granger : Sorry, I wanna ask you again. What is that and the function of it ?
Nurse : Oh, this is oxymeter. The function of this to measure the level of oxygen in your
blood. Then, it will also measure your pulse rate. Just put this to your thumb and
this oxymeter will measure it.
Mrs. Granger : Okay, you can start the measurement.
Nurse : Okay, Miss.
( The Nurse put oxymeter to patient’s thumb)
Nurse : Miss, your pulse rate is 86 beat per minute and the O2 saturation is 98 %. It’s
within normal limit.
Mrs. Granger : Good. And what are you doing with me after this ?
Nurse : The last produre is to check your temperature.
Mrs. Granger : Where you gonna put it ?
Nurse : On your armpit, Miss.
Mrs. Granger : I know that one. That’s thermometer, right ?
Nurse : Yeah, you’re right, Miss. I will put this thermometer on your armpits. And we
will know are you having fever or not.
Mrs. Granger : Okay, how’s the result ?
Nurse : 36.5 º Celcius. No problem with it.
Mrs. Granger : Thank you so much, Nurse.
Nurse : Doctor, her blood pressure is 100/80 mmHg, her saturation is 98%. Her pulse
rate is 86 beat per minute. Her temperature is 36. 5 ºC.
Doctor : Okay, Nurse.
(Then Mrs. Granger called by the doctor.)
Doctor : Mrs. Granger, no poblem with your vital sign now. Have you not been resting
lately?
Mrs. Granger : Yeah, I lack of sleep lately.
Doctor : I think you must get more rest, Miss.
Mrs. Granger : Okay, doctor. I will take a rest after this.
Doctor : Good. Any question, Miss ?
Mrs. Granger : Nope, doctor. Thank you.
Doctor : Your welcome, Miss. Have a nice day.
