Mayor Nirenberg,
This is a follow up to my request to you to have the City of San Antonio Police
Department minimize custodial arrests by using Cite and Release, and filing nor
violent offenses at large to the extent possible. I have also made this request to City
Manager Erik Walsh.
Although jails absolutely serve a purpose, during a pandemic event they can
inadvertently become incubators and amplifiers fora contagious
illness. In efforts to contain the continued spread of COVID-19, the Bexar County
Sheriff's Office seeks to minimize the jail population through alternative responses to
incarceration for non-violent offenses. Just this last weekend we had six apparently
homeless people arrested for criminal trespass.
‘As we all work together to protect and serve the citizens of Bexar County and
‘maintain the most appropriate response to the increasing threat of COVID-19 in our
area, DA Joe Gonzales, Sheriff Javier Salazar and I request your assistance in assuring
that all San Antonio law enforcement agencies under your jurisdiction work
cooperatively in this effort.
