Course Summary:
This second course in business statistics focuses on widely used data analysis techniques in business and
economics. Topics include two-sample procedures, categorical data analysis, analysis of variance,
regression, chi-squared analysis and other applications if time permits. The purpose of the course is to
learn the techniques and to learn where they can be applied through practical data analysis examples.
The major objectives of this course are:
1. Gain an understanding of basic statistics techniques that can be used to analyze data;
2. Learn how to execute statistical techniques/methods in software (Excel);
3. Gain experience applying techniques to appropriate situations and interpret data and results

Course Resources:
1. Text
Doane, David P. and Lori E. Seward, Applied Statistics in Business and Economics, 5/E, McGraw
Hill; ISBN 97807787303
2. Software
Microsoft Excel is necessary for this course. You will need it to follow along in class and complete
homework assignments.

PLEASE NOTE: I do acknowledge that hardcover textbooks are expensive. However, I do think it is
necessary to have a course text for referencing and reading out of the classroom. Homework assignments
and in-class examples will come from the textbook. Other versions of this textbook may be sufficient.
Please check with the instructor before purchasing a different version.

3. Website
The website for this course can be accessed via BB Learn. This site will be the official means of
distributing information throughout the semester. The syllabus, course schedule, all lecture slides,
homework assignments, homework solutions, announcements, updates, etc. will be posted here. Please
check this website regularly as this will be the means for distributing any pertinent class information. If
something is posted on BB, I operate under the assumption that you have seen it.

Course Policies/Requirements

1. Prerequisites
The prerequisites for this course are STAT201 [Min grade of C]

2. In Class Behavior
You are expected to conduct yourself in an appropriate manner during class time or office hours. While
this list is not an all inclusive list, it provides examples of inappropriate behavior:
• No use of cell phones during lectures
• No disrespectful or uncivil comments made regarding the opinions of others
• No intimidating or harassing behavior
• Please be punctual and prepared

3. Attendance
Attendance is not mandatory, however excessive absences are discouraged, because class participation is
essential to the assimilation of this course, and absences make it almost impossible for a student to meet
the academic objective. The student is responsible for obtaining, personally or from a colleague, notes on
class lectures or discussion and the nature and due dates of assignments as presented in class. Please note
that by missing class you may also miss in class examples or exercises meant to aid in preparing for
assignments and exams. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO TRACK DOWN RELEVANT
INFORMATION FROM CLASS.

4. Academic Integrity
Instances of cheating or plagiarism will be reported to the university and penalized with, at minimum, a
reduction of a full letter grade in class and at maximum an F for the course.

5. Students with Special Needs

If you are in need of special accommodations due to a disability, please see me as soon as possible.

6. Inclement Weather or Unplanned school closures

In the event that campus is closed on a day of class, a video class will be posted online. Any quiz or
homework assignment that is due will still be due. The only item that will be delayed under these
circumstances is an exam.

Grading:
1. Evaluation
Exam 1 : 25%
Exam 2 : 25%
Quizzes (4) : 10%
Homework (4) : 40%
**Curves may be assigned to any graded assessment at the discretion of the instructor.

2. Guaranteed Grade Ranges:

A 93-100; A- 90-92.9; B+ 87-89.9; B 83-86.9; B- 80-82.9; C+ 77-79.9; C 73-76.9; C- 70-72.9;
D+ 67-69.9; D 63-66.9; D- 60-62.9; F 59.9 and Below

3. Homework:
Homework sets are assigned at periodic intervals throughout the course. There will be 4 homework sets
total (each worth 10% of your grade). This homework is intended for the student to become more familiar
with the concepts that are covered in lectures and in the text. Homework may be discussed with other
members of the class, however, each person must prepare and hand-in his/her own work. This means
that no part of your homework should read verbatim from another student’s or any other reference
material. Homework is to be TYPED and presented in a neat, orderly fashion in a manner with
CLEARLY INDICATED ANSWERS. YOU MUST SUBMIT HOMEWORK ONLINE VIA BB
Learn as a .doc, .pdf, or other comparable file format. HOMEWORK DUE DATE, INCLUDING
TIME, IS SPECIFIED IN THE SYLLABUS. Homework will be graded between zero and hundred
points with a rubric that is visible to students. Late homework will be accepted according to the following
policy. Homework may be turned in up to two (2) days late (by 11:59 PM), with a penalty of 15 points
per day. No exceptions for any reason will be granted to this policy. Students will have in excess of 7
days to complete homework assignments and therefore all deadlines are final.
SPECIAL NOTE ON HOMEWORK: Occasionally, students submit the “wrong file” for homework
and do not discover this until after the due date. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure that the file
uploaded is their full and accurate homework submission. This includes, but is not limited to, instances of
forgetting to submit a problem, forgetting to submit parts of a problem or uploading an early version of
your homework rather than the final version. Please understand that it is impossible for me to verify that
you had completed the full and accurate homework before the deadline if you approach me after the
deadline. If you notice before the late deadline, adjustments can be made but the late penalty applies. NO
ADJUSTMENTS CAN BE MADE TO YOUR HOMEWORK SUBMISSION AFTER THE LATE
DEADLINE HAS PASSED.

4. Quizzes
There will be 4 quizzes scheduled throughout the semester (each worth 2.5% of your grade). Each will be
10 multiple choice questions, a single attempt, will be open book, timed at 45 minutes, and will be taken
online through BB Learn. They are meant to assess the student’s understanding of conceptual ideas and
ability to draw conclusions from/evaluate solutions. They will not involve any explicit calculations.
Students will have 5 days to complete a quiz and therefore late quizzes are not accepted.

5. Exams
There will be two exams scheduled throughout the course of the semester. These exams will NOT be
comprehensive and will be CLOSED BOOK. If an exam requires a large amount of formulas, I will
provide a formula sheet. Make up exams will be granted ONLY for emergency cases with proper
documentation (medical emergencies, university activities, etc). IF YOU DO NOT CONTACT ME
PRIOR TO THE DATE OF THE SCHEDULED EXAM, YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO
MAKE UP THE EXAM.

SPECIAL NOTE ON EXAMS: Your second exam will be during finals week. In the past, STAT202
has been assigned the last time slot of the last day of finals week by the registrar’s office. Be prepared for
this to happen and make travel plans accordingly. You can only move an exam for medical/family
emergency or for an approved Drexel University purpose.

6. Regrading Policy
If for some reason, any student has questions on how I graded a specific problem or why points were
deducted you have ONE WEEK from the time the assignment/test/quiz is handed back to ask me about it.
After one week, all grades are final. It is possible that I may miss something when grading or incorrectly
add points and I am happy to correct any error. However, if you come to me, please have a specific
question in mind and do not ask me to reconsider an entire assignment. I will do my best to provide
detailed information on why I took off points from any question so please take this into account before
coming to me.
