b) A Darrieus turbine produces a low speed shaft power of 1600 kW at the rated
speed of 22 rpm in a 14 m/s wind speed. (i) Determine rated rotor torque
from the values given for measured power and rated rotor speed. (ii) If the
rotor is started at this rated torque in 18 seconds, determine the rotor inertia.
(iii) If a constant torque clutch is used, how much energy is absorbed during
the start cycle? (iv) If the generator is rated at 1800 rpm, what is the input
torque to the generator, assuming no losses in the gearbox?
13. a) (i) Derive the equation for conventional momentum theory for performance
prediction and prove that the mean axial velocity at the rotor is half that of
the freestream velocity.
(ii) Plot the graph of Reynolds number effect on power coefficient and
explain.
b) (i) Explain with neat sketches about different operating states of a wind
turbine.
(ii) With neat sketches explain about axial, diametral and tangential flow
mills and give classification for wind power systems w.r.t above mills.
