ISOPENTANE STABILIZATION FACILITIES
1. INTRODUCTION
In the isopentane stabilization facilities, several sections of pipe are used for the circulation
of gaseous isopentane, liquid isopentane, cooling water and the mixture of some of them
in different states. All these sections of pipeline need to be calculated in order to define the
appropriate diameters for the process.
2. TARGET
Show the design memory of the feed pipe to the isopentane stabilization facilities.
Show the design memory of the pipes that interconnect the equipment of the
isopentane stabilization facilities.
Show the design memory of the pipes associated with the cooling equipment of the
isopentane stabilization facilities
Present the design memory of the transfer and loading pipes of tanker trucks of the
isopentane stabilization facilities
Present the design memory of the relief and vent pipes of the isopentane stabilization
facilities
3. DESIGN CRITERIA
The pipes diameter was selected based on the speed criteria for liquids as follows: (see
table 1)
Table 1. Criteria of speed and pressure drop for the selection of pipes
The calculation of pressure drop in liquid lines, the lines were simulated in Hysys in a pipe
segment with a length of 100 ft and the condition given.
Maximum speed
Diameter m/s
≤2” 10.01
3” - 8” 29.9
12”-18” 40.1
≤2” 0.6
≥3” 0.9
For estimating pressure drop in short runs of gas piping, the lines was simulated in Hysys
in a pipe segment with a length of 100 ft and the condition given.
4. DESIGN MEMORY
To define the appropriate diameters, each pipe section was simulated in Hysys. The speed
and the pressure drop was compared with the values in sizing criteria tables in order to
stablish the diameter (See APPENDIX).
The pipe wall thickness was defined in accordance with the ASME Code B31.3. The
ASME flange pressure/temperature rating and facing for this process is 150#. The material
used is Carbon Steel for regular temperature. Due the Isopentane is non corrosive, the
carbon steel material pipe has incorporated the minimum corrosion allowance of 1.59 mm.
The design memory for the isopentane relief system was calculated according the results
presented in Relief Analysis (See APPENDIX).
The design memory for the isopentane stabilization facilities lines are shown in table 3.
