BFC 31802 (Highway Engineering)

In the road construction work, the preparation of the surface layer which consists of binder and
wearing course is important. The material of this surface layer is asphalt concrete which
produced from the combination of coarse and fine aggregate, filler and bitumen.
In order to get the best proportion of materials to produce a good quality of asphalt concrete mix,
it needs to have an appropriate mix design. In Malaysia, the asphalt concrete mix is produced
based on the Marshall mix design method.
Each group will be provided with the result of Marshall mix design. Based on this result:
1. Complete the analysis of the Marshall mix design by completing the table provided.
2. Then, plot the curve of Marshall properties
3. Based on the curves of Marshall properties, determine the Optimum Bitumen Content
(OBC) of the asphalt mix.
Submit the complete report which includes the example of calculation for each Marshall
properties and all relevant information.
