sits in the lovely “Wellington” horse
community just off 225A in Ocala,
close to HITS and I-75. Shiny horses
graze in lush paddocks when not
enjoying the airy stalls in the
spotless, concrete center-aisle
barn. A full hunter/jumper course
graces the large grass ring and
there are plenty of trails for
hacking out. “It’s the perfect
environment for the horses”, says
Dana, who arrived in Ocala 10
years ago as a working student for
Don Stewart Stables.

she prepared, rode and showed
sale and show horses both at
home and on the road, winning
ribbons and championships at
major “AA” venues such as
Atlanta, Kentucky, Capital
Challenge, HITS Culpepper and
Ocala. "What I learned there

the business. Every day I
was surrounded by top riders and
trainers and that professionalism
and attitude have carried over to
my current business."
To further expand her knowledge
base, Dana accepted a position
at a jumper barn in Holland where
she spent several years
concentrating on young jumpers
and learning traditional
European methods of bringing
horses up through the levels. "The

How, Where & When did the
family business Begin?
My father was a trainer in south
Florida in the early 80’s then he went
into business with Christina
Schlusemeyer and became a part of
Quiet Hill in 1984.
What’s a typical day in your life?
My day starts with school at 8 till
noon, and if I’m lucky I can talk them
into meeting me for lunch in town
instead of eating at home. After
lunch I ride 3 to 4 horses. When I ride
at home it’s not all about lessons.
My father typically sits in the golf cart
talking on the phone and watching
me but he gives me a lot of freedom
because he is a big believer in kids
learning how to ride themselves.

When I was younger, I had horses

Winter Equestrian Festival

The FTI Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF)
is the world’s largest, longest running
horse show. In 2011, events will take
place once again on January 12 –
April 3, 2011, at the Palm Beach
International Equestrian Center in
Wellington, Florida. Management
company Equestrian Sport
Productions (ESP) looks forward to
continued improvements during the
summer months to make the 2011 FTI
Winter Equestrian Festival an
unparalleled equestrian destination
for riders from around the world.
WEF hosts nearly 5,000 horses and
3,000 riders from more than 20
countries and 46 states, ranging from
show jumping Olympic Gold Medalists
and World Champions to future
equestrian superstars in Short Stirrup.
With 70 divisions, WEF has something
for everyone.
Featured competitions for the 2011
season will include: The $75,000 FEI
Nations Cup presented by G&C Farm
(March 4), the $500,000 FTI Consulting
Finale Grand Prix (March 26), the
$200,000 FEI World Cup (March 12)
and $150,000 FEI World Cup presented
by Spy Coast Farm (February 12)
qualifiers, the Suncast 1.50m
Championship Jumper Series, the
$30,000 Surpass Speed Derby (January
16), the $50,000 Palm Beach Jumping
Derby at the Stadium (February 20),
the $50,000 Chronicle of the
Horse/USHJA International Hunter
Derby (April 2), the WCHR Hunter
Classic Spectacular events, and
events for collegiate and
interscholastic riders.
Throughout the twelve weeks of
competition, almost $6 million will be
awarded in prize money. New events
for the 2011 season include the Artisan
Farm Young Jumper Grand Prix Series,
which offer qualifiers for the EY Cup in
Leipzig, Germany, a $35,000 Puissance
(March 5), and special match races.

Nespresso Battle of the Sexes (held on
February 5) is a crowd-pleasing event
that pits a team of men against a
team of women, husbands against
wives, in a three-round format of
match races, a speed class, and a sixbar
class. The FTI Charity Challenge
will be held on Saturday, February 19,
and plans are being made to raise $1
million for 24 charities. Teams made
up of one professional and two
junior/amateur riders will compete
over a relay style speed course to
determine which charity will win the
biggest check.
The FTI Winter Equestrian Festival is also
a first-class spectator sporting event
and unique entertainment destination
for the general viewer who can enjoy
everything from a casual family day
with Free Admission to a specially
designed VIP experience.
Also at the Palm Beach International
Equestrian Center is the Palm Beach
Riding Academy, which offers special
packages for those who have never
been in the saddle as well as
experienced riders. The Palm Beach
Riding Academy provides horses and
lessons and the special VIP
experience, which includes a lesson,
golf cart for the day and lunch for two
at the prestigious private International
Club.
Equine Educational opportunities are

What changes has ESP
implemented for 2011?
We have moved all the competition
rings to the North Grounds. We have
also expanded Rings 7 and 8 to
almost twice their original sizes and will
be creating two pony rings on
Equestrian Club Estates road. All of our
rings, competition and schooling, will
now have the fantastic footing that
has been in the International Arena.
How will these changes improve
the show?
By concentrating the competition on
the North Grounds, exhibitors, trainers,
and owners can all get to their events
more easily, they can watch their
friends and family compete more
easily, and it makes the whole
experience more enjoyable. It will also
make a quieter environment on the
South Grounds, which will allow us to
have more exercise areas and quality
stabling than before.

What does WEF offer for riders?
We now offer the greatest
concentration of top quality
competition not only in the U.S., but in
the world. The prize money will be
over 6 million dollars and there are
opportunities for all levels of horses
and riders to compete and be
successful.
What are your greatest strengths?
The footing is our greatest strength; to
have such top quality ground
available in all our rings makes a huge
difference for the welfare of our
horses. The 12 week circuit gives
people the chance to pick and
choose what weeks they compete at
and they can still be successful. The
weather is usually fantastic and
everyone benefits from sunny days
and hopefully mild evenings to enjoy
fantastic sport.
What are you looking forward to
this year?
We are going to have a Puissance for
the first time in the main International
Arena, which will be a fun event. Last
year, the Great Charity challenge
raised over $500,000 for local charities.
It will be back and this year we hope
to raise over a million dollars for local
charities, so keep your Saturday night
free on February 19 to be a part of this
great event. We will also have the
new Artisan Farm Young Rider Series
for riders under 25. This is new really to
the United States, and it features three
Grand Prix events and one team
event. Riders earn points throughout
the series, and the top three riders
qualify to go to Europe and compete
at the Super Final during the FEI World
Cup Finals in Leipzig, Germany. I think
this will be a fantastic series that will
highlight the young riders from all
countries that compete at WEF. And
of course, our Saturday Night Lights
continues this year with the best in the
sport competing every Saturday
evening.

This season, HITS will celebrate the 30th

The 2011 HITS Ocala Winter Circuit will
once again run for eight weeks… two
non-rated weeks, and then six
consecutive AA-rated weeks.
HITS has made some very successful
and highly popular enhancements to
HITS Post Time Farm in recent years –
new rings, new footing, new tent stalls,
and a new show office. This year, we
will be updating the footing in the
Grand Prix schooling area, installing
some new roadways and freshening
up the landscaping throughout the
property.
HITS is also investing in a brand new
VIP experience for Ocala exhibitors,
with the debut of the Overlook VIP
Club at HITS Post Time Farm. The
Overlook Club will feature a brand
new tent frame with semi-permanent
sides for improved climate control
and a solid wooden floor. In addition,
a fully-equipped kitchen will offer
guests a new menu with a variety of
meal options that will include both hot
and cold delights. The Overlook Club
is perfectly situated in the center of all
the action, offering patrons fantastic
views of both the Grand Prix and Main
Hunter rings.
The big news for Ocala this season is
that with the return of the $1 Million
Grand Prix the circuit offers riders 14
opportunities to qualify for this
incredible show-jumping event. In
addition, HITS Ocala will host
numerous Devoucoux Hunter Prix,
which are qualifiers for the world’s
richest hunter final ever, the $500,000
HITS 3’3” Hunter Prix Final!

How will these changes improve
the show?
Facility updates always help to
improve the experience for exhibitors
by providing a beautiful, comfortable
and safe atmosphere to compete in.
New roadways will enable better
movement throughout the property,
while improved footing in the Grand
Prix schooling area will allow for more
productive warm-ups and
preparations for showing in the Grand
Prix ring.
The VIP Tent at HITS Ocala has
always been a very popular
destination for trainers, owners and
riders to congregate and enjoy great
food while watching the competition.
The all-new Overlook Club will provide
a more comfortable and
accommodating VIP experience for
customers, and will be another space
to host fabulous sponsor parties and
special events during the circuit.
HITS Ocala is the only winter show
circuit on the East Coast that offers
qualifiers for the $1 Million Grand Prix
and the $500,000 HITS 3’3” Hunter Prix
Final. Providing these opportunities for
both high-performance jumpers, as
well as professional, amateur, and
junior riders will help to make this
season one of the most exciting and
meaningful circuits for hundreds of
equestrians.

What changes have been
implemented for RMI FL 2011?
RMI continues to look for ways to offer
quality horse shows with less costs to
the exhibitor. To this end, we have
determined under current USEF rules
we can offer a wide variety of hunter
and jumper classes as "Demonstration"
classes which result in NO USEF/USHJA
member fees, NO USEF drug fees,
and NO USHJA horse registration fees.
These classes, which are exactly the
same as unrated classes we have
offered in the past, provide an
excellent opportunity for young
horses, new exhibitors, or exhibitors
who concentrate in another discipline
to participate without the burden of
the "cover charge" required by rated
classes.
How will these changes improve
the show?
We appreciate the comments and
compliments we have received from
exhibitors for our variety, quality and
quantity of awards. We hope to find
ways to do even better. For 2011, we
have split the shows into two Grand

Champion series: December (2 shows)
and Spring (4 shows).

What does RMI offer?
RMI has a policy of charging ONLY for
stalls which are used, not stalls
reserved. While many Florida shows
require every horse to have a stall, we
are pleased to offer a "trailer-in" fee
alternative. RMI also continues its
strong support of the Hunter Breeding
and Pony Hunter Breeding by offering
double-judged classes with no late
fees, no office fees, and no trailer-in
fees.
What are your greatest strengths?
RMI strives to have the most efficient,
most hospitable and most
knowledgeable show office in the
country. We hope you have
experienced a top level of service
from our office, whether answering
questions about membership fees or
questions about your account. If you
are ever not satisfied, please speak to
Pam personally; we want to make it
right.
We don't have an "app for that" yet,
but you can find RMI online to make
entries, make payments, find class
counts, schedule changes, and timely

What are you looking forward to
this year?
The Pleasure Horse-Hunt Seat division,
offered with a national year-end
award for the first time in 2010, has
gained in popularity. For 2011, we

have expanded the division to three
classes, each offering $100 in prize
money. Virtually every horse and rider
at the show is eligible for this division
and we encourage owners to
participate in these new USEF HOTY
classes.
RMI is offering more prize money in the
rated hunters and higher level jumpers
for 2011. We continue to offer jumper
classes WITHOUT nomination fees.

What changes have been
implemented for 2011?
The Jacksonville Winter Series will be
held for 3 weeks in 2011, which is
scaled back from the 5 weeks that we
usually have. All of the new USEF High
Performance classes will be offered.
The show will start off with the $100,000
Green Cove Springs World Cup
Qualifier sponsored by Glen Kernan
Realty & $25,000 World Cup Welcome
Class. Week Two will feature an
International Hunter Derby sponsored
by Jerry Parks Insurance Group & the
Bruning Foundation, a first for the
Jacksonville Winter Series. Week Two
will also feature a Therapeutic Riding
Benefit Luncheon and Grand Prix on
Sunday. Week Three offers a $10,000
Children/Adult Jumper Classic. There
will be a USHJA National Hunter
Classic, sponsored by Blue Gate Farm
each of the three weeks as well.
How will these changes improve
the show?
We feel that in these tough economic
times that changes must be made to
offer exhibitors a value, while not
cutting the quality. NFHJA was able
to cut some costs by trimming down
two of the lighter weeks so that 3
fabulous weeks jam packed with
special classes, money and prizes
could be offered.
What does the Jacksonville Winter
Series offer riders?
Jacksonville has come to be known
for its exhibitor hospitality, and this
year will be no different. The VIP tent
will return, complete with food, drink

and HEATERS!
The Rider's Lounge, complete with a
TV to catch up on football or the
news, wireless internet and
refreshments, will also be available.
What are your greatest strengths?
The biggest strengths of the
Jacksonville Winter Series has to be
the Management (Bob Bell & Allen
Rheinheimer of Classic Company),
Office Staff and Crew.
They have been returning for over 10
years, so exhibitors are always
greeted with a friendly face ringside
and in the office.
What are you looking forward to
this year?
We feel that our exhibitors will truly
enjoy all of the changes and new and
exciting class offerings that will be
available to choose from. We look
forward to seeing familiar faces, and
look forward to making new friends
this winter.

Hunters & Equitation
With Dana Noga, USEF ‘r’ Judge
Ever wonder how a judge arrives at
their score? The judge is basically a
score keeper. A contestant is judged
from the point they enter the ring until
they leave. A judge's job is to score
the positives and negatives of all
rounds then place into order. A Hunter
class is judged primarily on the horse
and its jumping style while the
Equitation divisions are focused on the

Hunters:
The horse should enter the ring, make
a nice courtesy circle and proceed to
the first fence. All fences should be
jumped straight, in the middle with a
consistent pace maintained from
beginning to end. A jump is
considered good if the horse meets it
at the correct take off point, brings
both knees up and square, has a
round topline and follows through with
the back end. Lead changes should
be clean and the horse should have a
relaxed expression.

Common Errors:
1. Adding or subtracting strides.
This is a big “no-no”. Leaving out a
stride is usually more dangerous and
considered a greater fault. In lower
level classes-2'6" and under, I don’t
have a problem with adding strides as
long as the rider adds IN ALL lines..
2. Cross cantering, cantering on the
wrong lead and trot changes.
These mistakes should automatically
put you in the 60's and 50's. In
beginner classes I prefer to see trot
changes instead of cross cantering or
cantering on the wrong lead. In my
opinion the rider who acknowledges
the error and corrects it is doing a
better job than the rider who
continues to cross-canter or canter on
the wrong lead. That said, excessive
trotting on course usually means a
score of 50-55.
3. Missed distances. Anything way
too long or so close it’s scary gets a
score of 60-70. Minor distance errors
can be overlooked if you horse has
good form and you do not give the
mistake away with your position. The
more distance errors and the worse
your horses form the lower your score.
4. Other major faults include bucking,
rearing, shying, kicking out, excessive
speed, dangerous jumping style,
stopping and rails. These will all earn a
score of 50 or less.
Equitation:
As with the hunters, judges wish to see
straight, to the middle, consistent
pace, and clean lead changes. The
main difference is that the rider
becomes the focus of judging.
“Form to function” is key.
Eyes up, heels down, leg down and
around the horse, back flat and arms
following the motion of the horse are
all essential elements of correct
position. The seat should be two point,
three point or a modified position
depending upon the questions asked
throughout the course and the level
of the riders in the class. The sitting trot
is almost always asked on the flat and
most Equitation courses will have
bending lines, rollbacks, or trot fences.
Practicing these things at home will
increase your confidence at the show.

Common Faults:
1. Position of rider: stiff, posed, sloppy,
loose, jumping ahead or falling
behind the motion, over or under
releasing and looking down.
2. Wrong leads and diagonals are
highly annoying and usually
avoidable.
3. A Rail in Equitation is not always the
kiss of death. If the rider meets the
fence correctly and the horse is a little
careless many judges will subtract
only 4 points from the overall score.
Common Guidelines for ALL
Warm-Up Areas:
These rules apply to everyone but are
especially important for beginner &
intermediate riders. Teach & practice
these rules at home.

Trocano’s ‘Warm-Up Etiquette’
published in our Dec 2009 Show issue.
Track Left: When entering the ring for
a flat class, all riders should track to
the left first. If this seems confusing,
here’s how to figure it out. If you are
entering from outside the ring, turn to
the right and proceed along the rail.
If you are already inside the ring,
stand in the middle and from any
point turn left to proceed to the rail.
Passing: When all horses & riders are
moving in the same direction, always
pass to the INSIDE, not the outside.
You risk getting pinned between
horses and the rail or having to “pull
up” or stop. When horses & riders are
moving in both or opposite directions,
use “left shoulder to left shoulder” or
“left hand to left hand” to determine
who stays on the rail and who passes
to the inside. In other words, if you are
moving clockwise or tracking right
around the ring and others are
tracking left (counter-clockwise), THEY
have right of rail and YOU must move
over to the inside track to pass them.
Jumping: Call out “Heads Up” as you
proceed to a warm-up fence to alert
others of your intentions. It is helpful to
call out the specific jump (“Heads Up
Oxer” or “Heads Up Cross-Rail”).

especially if everyone practices it. If
you wish to circle or cut across the
ring, pay attention and time it to
prevent running into or cutting off
others.
The Red Ribbon: If you are riding a
horse that you know is likely to kick at
others, indicate that possibility with a
red ribbon in the tail or polite verbal
warning to keep adequate distance.
Out of Control Horse: If you cannot
control your horse, move into the
center of the ring and wait for others
to walk so you may safely excuse
yourself from the ring.
Politely Share Rules: There will always
be someone who doesn’t know or
isn’t paying attention. Politely remind
them if you feel they are endangering
the safety of others.

all disciplines- this is a good, simple
bending exercise to practice at
home. First, let’s review “Track & Line”.
This refers to the track you take and
the number of strides required in a
line. A caveat to consider: Anytime
you ADD or leave out a stride in any
line, there is always going to be an after
effect and you need to be able
to anticipate how to handle it.”
The Bending Exercise:
Put three small jumps (2’) in a circle so
the inside track is 3 strides, the middle
is 4 and the outside track is 5. Do this
both ways thinking about smooth &
correct leads on landings.
Another exercise is to canter a jump
and within 5 strides walk a jump.

their horses before winter circuit which
can be fine in some cases depending
upon the experience of the horse
and/or rider combination; but
generally I feel horse/rider
combinations need to jump regularly
(2-3 times per week) in order to create
familiarity and fitness in order to
TACKLE winter circuit with relative
ease. Many horses become tired
and/or sore during winter circuits
because they simply are not fit and
are expected to boost their jumping
regimen exponentially. I recommend
getting out the stable and scheduling
some extra lessons in order to prepare
and not be overwhelmed come show
time. But be cautious not to do more
than is required in terms of size and
difficulty otherwise problems can arise
which are counter-productive to what
you are trying to achieve and
prepare for…Winter Circuit!”

“A very important thing to remember
in order to win in show ring is "it is all in
the preparation". Make sure horse is
Canter thru the exercise on a circle in
both directions until you and your
horse are comfortable and able to
maintain the rhythm around the whole
circle. When you feel ready interject
the exercise into a course. Instead of
just cantering the turn to the next
jump canter thought the gymnastic.
Why I think it works: First it gives you
and your horse a reference; therefore
taking the anxiety out of the
statement we have all heard
“reestablish the rhythm in the turn”. If
you don’t know what “the rhythm”
feels like how can you find it? Second,
it gives you and your horse something
to focus on other than fussing with
each other and prevents either of you
getting lost in the turn.
