9-1. INTRODUCTION

All steelwork (platform, hoist and transfer cradles) must be checked at least once each
year to ensure that the protective coating, either a lubricant or paint, remains intact and
provides effective corrosion control.

Surfaces protected by a lubricant are maintained as required by cleaning and/or

recoating as recommended in the relevant sections of this manual.

9-2. PAINTWORK REPAIRS

Rolls-Royce Marine North America Inc. (RRMNA) recommends the following

preparation and application procedure as a minimum to ensure effective protection from
corrosion when paint repairs are required.

9-2.1. Surface Preparation

All surfaces to be repaired must be cleaned of all corrosive and corrosion

products, dust, oil, grease or deteriorated coating:

1. Install protection for the surrounding areas and equipment by using

drop cloths, masking, shields and blanking plugs as required to ensure
that abrasives do not enter or damage the hoist components, wire
ropes, electrical system components (such as junction boxes or limit
switch boxes), or damage good paint work.

2. Degrease the area to be painted and blast with high pressure fresh
water, to remove all of the chlorides.

3. For major repairs, abrasive blast the area to be recoated to “Near-White”,

Swedish Standards Organization Sa-2.5 with a sharp abrasive with a grit
size between 180 and 200. The area surrounding the repair must be
feathered by sanding or wire brushing, to fair into the adjacent coatings.

CAUTION
Recycled blasting media should be
refurbished and maintained so as not
to contaminate surfaces with residual
organic materials.

Compressed air used for the abrasive

blasting must be free of oil and
moisture.

For platform steelwork, abrasive in

water or water in abrasive is
acceptable. Flash rust may occur but
is acceptable. Abrasive and water
mixtures should not be used for work
at the hoist.

Should rust inhibitors be used with

water, the inhibitors must be
acceptable to the coating
manufacturer.

CAUTION
The hoist wire ropes must be
completely covered and protected
when abrasive blasting is being
carried out nearby.

9-2.2. Painting

1. The system coating shall be as follows:

 Primer: Zinc Rich Epoxy Primer paint applied at 2 mils

(50µm) minimum Dry Film Thickness (80%,
Minimum Total Zinc Percent in Dry Film).
 Intermediate: Two components, Polyamide cured Epoxy paint
applied at 5 mils (125µm) minimum Dry Film
Thickness (with MIO).
 Finish: Two components, Polyamide cured Epoxy paint
applied at 5 mils (125µm) minimum Dry Film
Thickness.

The applications shall be in compliance with the paint supplier’s instructions

and product data sheets stated environmental conditions for application,
drying times, re-coat times, and cure times. No deviations shall be allowed.

Each coat dry film shall not exceed the recommended dry film thickness
stated in the paint supplier’s product data sheets.

The paint specification shall be submitted to RRMNA for approval.

2. The rail shims and the area around the rail stud are to be coated with
Texaco Crater Fluid H, or similar material as rust preventer.

The entire rail except for the wheel rolling surface is to be coated with
Texaco Crater Fluid H, or similar material.

9-3. WELD REPAIRS

9-3.1. Precautions

When welding, the location of the welder’s earth (ground) cable must be
carefully chosen. If welding is to be performed on the platform, the ground
cable must be attached to the platform section where the welding is being
carried out.

CAUTION
Care must be taken to place the
welding ground (earth) cable onto the
platform section where welding is
taking place. If this is not done,
current may find earth (ground)
through a hoist since the platform is
not one continuous member. This
can cause serious damage to the
sheave bearings and the wire rope.

NOTE Hoist wire ropes must be completely covered and protected when welding
or abrasive blasting is being carried out nearby.

9-3.2. Quality of Weld

All welding is to be as specified on the RRMNA drawings Detail Drawings in

Sections 13-1 and 13-3 and the American Welding Society (AWS) Structural
Welding Code.

The requirements for weld procedure tests and weld inspection are to be
agreed upon by the classifying society, or other local regulatory surveyors.
Past experience has shown that the following procedural excerpts in
Sections 9-3.3 through 9-3.5 have met the Lloyd’s Register requirements.

For specific details, consult publication AWS Structural Welding Code-Steel.

9-3.3. Visual Inspection

All welding (100%) shall be visually inspected.

9-3.4. Ultrasonic Inspection

All tension full penetration groove welds shall be ultrasonically tested for
100% of the weld length. All lower flanges shall be considered to be under
tensile stress.

All other full penetration welds shall be ultrasonically tested for 10 percent of
the weld length or 100mm (four inches), whichever is greater. If any
unacceptable weld conditions are found in this length, the entire length of the
weld shall be ultrasonically tested.

9-3.5. Magnetic Particle Inspection

All critical fillet welds around the end sections of the main transverse beam
shall be magnetic particle tested. The Surveyor, or RRMNA Engineer, shall
decide which welds in this area are critical.

Each web to flange fillet weld shall be magnetic particle tested for 10 percent
of its length. If any unacceptable weld conditions are found in this length,
then an additional 10 percent of the length of the weld shall be subjected to
magnetic particle testing.
