CONTENT STANDARD

Demonstrate understanding of the key concepts of coordinate geometry.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD
The learner is able to formulate and solve problems involving geometric figures
on the rectangular coordinate plane with perseverance and accuracy.

I.  OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
A. Derive the distance and midpoint formula.
B. Demonstrate the use of distance and midpoint formula using ordered pairs.
C.Apply the distance and midpoint formula in solving real-life problems.
II.   SUBJECT MATTER
A.   Topic: Distance and Midpoint Formula
B.   Reference: Mathematics learner’s module for Grade 10 from Department of
Education
C.   Materials: Cartesian plane and Activity cards
III.   LEARNING EXPERIENCES
A. DAILY ROUTINE ACTIVITIES
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Checking of Attendance
4. Checking of the cleanliness and orderliness of the classroom

B.  PRIMING
1. Review: Ask the class about the previous lesson. Ask them students if
they really understand the past lesson (Pythagorean theorem)

C. MOTIVATION
1. All students will think of an ordered.
2. Let them plot it on the Cartesian plane (that point will serve as the location
of their house)
3. Ask them how far/how many units away is student A’s house to Student
B’s house.
4. Let them wonder what would be the lesson for that day.
IV. ACTIVITY
Perform the following activity. Answer every question that follows.
1. Plot the points A(2,1) and B(8,9) on the coordinate plane below.
2. Draw a horizontal line passing through A and a vertical line containing B.
3. Mark and label the point of intersection of the two lines as C.
4. Connect A and B a line segment.
5. Replace the coordinates of A by ( X 1 , Y 1 ) and B by ( X 2 , Y 2).

V. ANALYSIS

#3 What are the coordinates of C? Explain how you obtained your answer.
What is the distance between B and C?
How about the distance between B and C?
#4 What kind of triangle is formed by A, B and C? Explain your answer.
How will you find the distance between A and B?
What is AB equal to?
#5 What would be the resulting coordinates of C?
What expression represents the distance between A and C?
How about the expression that represents the distance between B and C?
What equation will you use to find the distance between A and B? Explain your answer.

VI. ABSTRACTION

DISTANCE BETWEEN TWO POINTS

The distance between two points is always nonnegative. It is positive when the two
points are different, and zero if the points are the same. If P and Q are the two points,
then the distance from P to Q is the same as the distance from Q to P. That is, PQ=QP.

Consider two points that are aligned horizontally or vertically on the coordinate plane.
The horizontal distance between these points is the absolute value of the difference of
their x-coordinates. Likewise, the vertical distance between these points is the absolute
value of the difference of their y-coordinates.

DISTANCE FORMULA

The distance between two points, whether or not they are aligned horizontally or
vertically, can be determined using the distance formula.

D= √ ( X 2−X 1 )2+(Y 2−Y 1 )2

MIDPOINT FORMULA

If L ( X 2−X 1 ) and (Y 2−Y 1) are the endpoints of a segment and M is the midpoints, then
X − X 1 Y 2−Y 1
the coordinates of M=( 2 , )
2 2

VII. APPLICATION

GROUP ACTIVITY

 HOW FAR ARE WE FROM EACH OTHER? (GROUP 1)

Find the distance between each points on the coordinate plane. Answer the
questions that follow.
