INTRODUCTION

The case discusses the task taken over by DesignTech Systems, an India based design
solutions company, along with a North-America based leading industrial radiators
manufacturers to optimize their radiator designs and aided their manufacturing counterparts
in North America and China. The case has briefly discussed the process, various challenges
and solution implemented along with the impact it had on the operations and performance of
the hiring company. 

DigitalTech had an important task to undertake because each of the client companies’
radiators were designed and manufactured to suit the requirements of their clients' specific
needs depending on their functional requirement. The greater degree of uniqueness and
customization meant that in the current competitive scenario the pressure of shortening the
design and manufacturing timelines required reviewing and redefining the design and
manufacturing process. Also, since each unit produced had high uniqueness it needed part
communisation and design optimisation to save on various types of costs involved. The main
aspect of the whole process was to get the design right the first time due to high rework costs
which could also result in forfeiting the entire product. 

CHALLENGES

Restricted experience of working on unique standards: Being a highly specialised job,

collaboration was extensively needed as the job required a lot of customisation, which led to
successful results.

Cross continent communication & coordination: Since the project required its team to
communicate with parties in North America and China, therefore it required cross continent
communication where details regarding the Bill of materials were shared and manufacturing
drawing were submitted.
Faster turnaround time: The company focuses on the customers and is committed in
providing deliveries on time. Thus, the focus remains on shorter design cycles to help them
match the delivery timelines.

Unawareness of customer manufacturing process: Proper knowledge of the manufacturing

procedure is critical. Unique products require change in the process of manufacturing.  

SOLUTIONS

One of the major challenges was that DesignTech was new to the client’s manufacturing
procedures. The team’s visit to the client’s manufacturing unit gave them a clear
understanding about the design, manufacturing essential and constraints to assist them
operate on identifying solutions and redefining design processes to satisfy the desired quality,
standard, time and cost of development. Communication across continent was a challenge as
well which was resolved using dedicated server which was only accessible to authorised
personnel. Since the manufacturing units were present in China and NA which followed
different metric systems, bi-metric system was maintained i.e. all designs were shared in both
inches and millimetres. Design Automation was the technology used to automate certain
design processes that contained standard or uniform part. Design automation helped them
complete an otherwise 15 days job in astonishing 5 hours. This drastically reduced the turn-
around time and was highly appreciated by clients.

CONCLUSION

DesignTech systems collaborated with this North America based leading radiators
manufacturer. The collaboration was done to optimise their radiator design and
manufacturing. DesignTech faced various challenges such as better turnaround time, no work
experience on unique working standards, communication with other departments in China
and North America. Although, these challenges were solved by maintaining a dedicated
server to transfer knowledge and they also maintained bi-metrics to avoid all confusions.
DesignTech also automated many design processes which reduced their operational time.
This helped DesignTech to achieve a quick turnaround time. Thus, automation helped them
deliver the product more proficiently and quickly.
