Design Specifications Activity

Procedure
Consult with your customer(s) or intended customer(s) and complete the following in your
engineering notebook. Use the information you gather to craft your design specification.
1. Who is the target consumer?
Divide the following list of criteria among your team members. Each team member will then
identify specific requirements necessary for a successful solution related to each assigned
element. Be as specific as possible and include measurable values where applicable. For
example, use “Within one second the device must warn the vehicle driver and disengage the
cruise control when the car attains a distance of less than 50 ft directly between itself and another
vehicle” rather than “The device must warn the driver and slow the vehicle when the car is too
close to an object.” Be sure to identify the source(s) of the information on which you base each
constraint. Add additional criteria as needed.
 Consumer Needs: The customer's needs a product that is conveniently placed around the
gym and connected to all weightlifting equipment, so they have easy access to cleaning
wipes wherever they are in the gym.
 Performance: The product will have strong magnetic form that connect to all gym
equipment around the gym such as treadmills, squat racks, bench presses, dumbbell
racks, and more.
 Target Cost: The cost for each one will be $15 but buying in bundles will be available to
larger gyms who would need to purchase more of our product. For 10 it would cost $120,
for 25 $300, and for 50 it would cost $500
 Size and Weight: What size should the product be, or what restrictions to size exist?
What are the weight restrictions on the product?
 Aesthetics: Are there preferences in the appearance features of the product (color,
surface treatment, shape, material)? If so, describe them.
 Materials: Is there a specific material or materials that must be used? If yes, describe it.
 Safety and Legal Issues: None
 Ergonomics: It’ll be easy to access and use while at the same time be completely out of
the way of your exercise.
 Operating Environment: Our product should be able to be used in any environment if
it's not being abused directly.
 Global Environment: Our product is non-toxic and should be mostly recyclable.
 Service Life: The service life of our product would be a year minimum.
 Product Life: The anticipated length of time that the product will be produce before
being replaced will be 2 years
 Durability and Maintenance: There is no maintenance required for this product to
function.
 Additional Criteria: None
2. As a team prioritize your list of criteria from most important to least important.
1.) Consumer Needs
2.) Performance
3.) Size and Weight
4.) Target Cost
5.) Ergonomics
6.) Service Life
7.) Durability and Maintenance
8.) Materials
9.) Safety and Legal Issues
10.) Operating Environment
11.) Aesthetic
12.) Product Life
13.) Global Environment
14.)
3. As a team list applicable constraints that the designer must work within. Be specific. In
other words, listing “time” as a constraint is not acceptable – you must state specifically
how much time is available for the design process.

 We need to complete our design and have a prototype by...

 We need to keep the cost of develop of the prototype under $30
 Our design needs to be strong a durable
 The product needs to be able to grip to different surfaces
 The product should be maintenance free
