A S Whiting, Samuel Young.

DEVOTIONAL
"We can learn much from children," stated A S Whiting. He then
related a personal experience with his children.
The family needed a second car to transport the children back and
forth to school. They purchased an old 1957 station wagon for $50, and
it became known as the Green Monster.

• When the family's better car needed emergency repairs just as they
were about to leave for a vacation in the mountains, Whiting decided to
take the Green Monster, much to the delight of the children who enjoyed
its extra roominess. As they approached the mountains, snow began
falling heavily. While other cars slithered and skidded off the road,
the Green Monster just kept plugging along slowly until it reached the
summit. Then it coughed a time or two and died!

The family had no warm clothes with them and the thermometer kept
dropping. Several times Whiting got out, raised the hood, checked the
motor, got back in the car, turned on the key, and nothing happened.
He was simply going through the motions since he knew little about
repairing a car's engine.
Finally one of the children said, "Daddy, why don't we pray to
Jesus?" They did, the car started immediately, and they had no more
trouble with the old jalopy for the rest of the trip.

Whiting's conclusion was that more than likely what we need today
is the faith of a little child!

PRAYER

J H Harris.

DEVOTIONAL

George E Vandeman, Director of It is Written (IIW), who was

visiting the GC headquarters to attend a special meeting was asked by

the chairman to give a report. He stated that IIW is alive and well
and planning great things for the future. The revolutionary changes
that have taken place in many countries have also been felt in the
Lord's work.
Two years ago, IIW lost 30 percent of its financial backing due to
the exposure of an immoral television preacher. It has been difficult
to regain lost ground. Vandeman reports good relationships with
several mainstream protestant ministers. Recently one of them appealed
to fellow television preachers to be sure and not send mixed signals to
their audiences which confuse them.

The latest ratings for IIW which indicate how people choose
television programs show IIW as third from the top in a list of 61
programs. Only the spirit of God can do this. This rating is in spite
of having to cut ten stations. The greatest blow to IIW was when the
New York City channel was lost due to lack of funds.

The next major planning step was to contract with Superchannel in

England which broadcasts to 22 countries, costing less that the
Los Angeles station. When negotiations were begun for the
Superchannel, it reached seven million homes. Six months later it
reached eleven million and now can enter 22 million homes.
Superchannel reaches 56 million English speaking people including those
learning English.

• Vandeman gave glory to God for all that has been accomplished.

DEVOTIONAL

R J Kloosterhuis read, "Wherefore . . . brethren, give diligence

to make your calling and election sure." - -II Peter 1:10 (NIV) We are

to make certain that our calling and election are sure. There are two
things that will happen if we do this; we will never fall and we will
receive a rich welcome into heaven. The call and election are from
Jesus but man himself must confirm the call. Those who are doing all
they can in a human way achieve spiritual surefootedness.

Ellen G White states that "Small mistakes may be ordered by the

Lord to save you from making larger mistakes."--Unlimited Love p 132.

The chairman extended a call for each one of us to eagerly have an

daily intimate communion with God. Let us make our calling and
election sure. We make the deciding vote!

Opening prayer was offered by Gary Ross. He thanked God for the
good news that the two stranded families in Liberia are now in
Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire and that 0 E Gordon may be able to leave
tomorrow. He also entreated the Lord for the success of the upcoming
1990 General Conference Session.

ACCEPTANCE OF DONATIONS FROM LIQUOR INDUSTRY--

RECOMMENDATION TO NAD LEADERSHIP

R L Dale reported that the Porter Memorial Hospital Foundation is

an organization that raises funds for the hospital. It is not
controlled by the hospital and is a community-based group. In
reference to a request of the General Conference Committee for a
report on Acceptance of Donations from Liquor Industry--Recommendation
to NAD Leadership (see GCC-90-32). In a brochure Coors Beer was
incorrectly mentioned as a sponsor for Porter Memorial Hospital.
Actually, Coors Beer made a contribution to the Porter Memorial
Hospital Foundation and has no part in directing the affairs of the
hospital. In the future such contributors will be listed as companies
who give gifts rather than as sponsors. The same situation applies to
St Helena Hospital.

This situation is, seen by these hospital administrators as

similar to Ingathering where funds are solicited anywhere. They feel
that they must work with the hospital foundations which are run by the
community.

References to this report were to the effect that the counsel of

the Spirit of Prophecy is very clear on the matter of accepting gifts
from both the liquor and tobacco industries. If necessary hospitals
should make it clear to foundations that they cannot accept this kind
of donation.
Dale stated that an inquiry will be made into the role of
foundations that are established for the purpose of soliciting funds
for hospitals.

PELTON, RAYMOND--EXPRESSION OF APPRECIATION

Raymond Pelton expressed his appreciation to the Lord for the

privilege of working for Him for 41 years. He explained that he had
been taught all through Church School to plan to go into the work of
the Church.
Pelton also expressed appreciation to the General Conference
Committee for the opportunity given him to work with the health-care
institutions around the world. He has also enjoyed the friendship and
comradery here in the Headquarters office.
