JOB TITLE: Creative Team – Sunderland Empire Stages ‘Bugsy Malone’


REPORTING TO: Creative Learning & Community Partnerships Team
LOCATION: Sunderland

Sunderland Empire is a spectacular grade two listed, large scale receiving house venue,
hosting a vibrant programme featuring touring theatre such as Disney’s Lion King and
National Theatres War Horse, as well as comedy, music and community performances.

Sunderland Empire Creative Learning & Community Partnerships (CLCP) is a dynamic


department which delivers an award winning programme of locally driven, nationally
significant cultural education, both in house and on outreach throughout the region.

CLCP are thrilled to be in the process of launching Sunderland Empire Stages ‘Bugsy Malone’;
a two week intensive programme which will engage over 100 young people aged between 8
and 18.

The programme will comprise of a 2 week intensive rehearsal process 17th – 29th Aug in a large
scale production, to be performed on the iconic Sunderland Empire stage:

• 28 August (Evening)
• 29 August (Matinee and Evening)

We are seeking to work collaboratively with creative specialists to join a Creative Team to
support the running and delivery of Sunderland Empire Stages.
We welcome interest from the following creative specialists:

• Musical Director (Musical Theatre)


• Choreographer (Musical Theatre)
• Director (Musical Theatre)

We are looking for Creative Team members whose facilitation style can be tailored to a very
wide cross section of young people, with an awareness of the wider cultural and social
development of Sunderland, as well as an understanding of the needs of the local
community.

You will also be concerned with supporting the talent development of young performers,
harnessing the rehearsal phase to build performance skills and confidence, through a fun
and rewarding experience where all members of the ensemble are valued and recognised.

As well as individuals, we would also be delighted to consider applications from established


Creative Teams/organisations with appropriate experience delivering high quality work of this
nature with young people.

Successful candidates will work in collaboration with the Creative Learning & Community
Partnerships Team; supporting our commitment to effective and meaningful working
partnerships.

Main Purpose:
As a passionate, reliable and engaging member of the Creative Team you will support the
CLCP department in developing a 2 week rehearsal process in August 2020 at Sunderland
Empire Theatre, including 3 large scale performances on the Sunderland Empire main stage.
With the support of the CLCP department, you will be responsible for implementing the delivery
of Sunderland Empire Stages rehearsal process, and the execution of 3 live performances.

You will also provide insight and support during auditions for the project (held 8th & 9th April),
and throughout the lead up. It is therefore essential that applicants are available on the
following dates:

• 8 - 9 April August for auditions of young people aged 8 - 18.


• 17 – 29 August 2020 for rehearsals including 3 performances.

Key Responsibilities:

• To support the planning, delivery and staging of Sunderland Empire Stages summer
production.
• Along with the other members of the Creative Team, plan and support auditions and
rehearsals for Sunderland Empire Stages.
• Attend a minimum of one full production meeting, and strive to be available to
continue key communications with the CLCP team.
• Liaise closely with other members of the Creative Team (including Director,
Choreographer, Musical Director, Technical, arts and project management teams) on
all aspects of the planning and delivery of the project.
• Contribute to the creation and development of any resource materials.
• Support the ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the project.
• Fulfil occasional supervision, and safeguarding duties of the young people as required,
with the support of chaperones.
• Work within Sunderland Empire CLCP’s remit to provide as much access to activities as
possible to people a wide range of additional needs.
• Ensure that ATG Risk Management (health and safety) standards are met.
• Operate in line with all ATG company policy & procedures, including but not limited to
Safeguarding, Risk Management and Privacy Policies.
• Champion the work of ATG Creative Learning & Community Partnerships, the venue
and the wider strategies for the area.
• Complete any other delegated tasks outlined by CLCP department or ATG.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

• Exceptional and specialist knowledge and experience in a similar role, working


particularly with young people.
• Outstanding organisation skills, including time keeping, administration of invoices and
calendar management.
• Excellent communication and presentational skills, both written and verbal.
• Excellent collaboration and team work skills.
• Experience of leading in your creative discipline to support a large scale youth
production.
• Confidence to plan and deliver a high quality creative process in collaboration with the
rest of the Creative Team & CLCP.
• Knowledge & understanding of safeguarding legislation, DBS procedures, and best
practises relevant to working with children, young people and vulnerable adults
• Experience of working with a wide cross section of the community, in particular young
people, hard to reach and disadvantaged groups
• Experience and/or understanding of working in a theatre setting
• Knowledge of access issues as pertinent to the theatre industry.
• Knowledge of multi arts genres, disciplines, approaches and facilitation in cultural
education.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

• An awareness of the wider cultural and social development of Sunderland, as well as an


understanding of the needs of the local community.
• Educated/trained to degree level in a relevant subject area.
